Not about the Sox, but about the Yanks. There are speculations that the Brewers may trade Carlos Lee (espn mlb index, rumor central). I think the Yanks would show immediate interest in him given their current outfield situation. For them to have interest though, I think Sheffield would have to be out for the year They would probably have to give up Hughes to get him. I think this would be good for the Sox, because the yanks give up their best prospect and Lee is a free agent next year. I much rather them get a Carlos Lee then a Barry Zito or Dontrelle Willis.

If they give up Hughes for Lee, i would be the happiest Sox fan alive. I want Lee to, but would never give up someone like Lester or Hansen for him.

IMO, Carlos Lee is the most underrated player in baseball. He is a consistent run-producer, always has 25-30 homers, 90-100 RBI. But I do agree, I would rather the Yankees get him than a Willis or Zito.

about a possible Lee to NY trade

Yankees - Two big names are now residing on the DL, so everyone expects the Yankees to make some kind of move. Even if Melky Cabrera continues to exceed expectations, the Yanks would probably feel better adding a true slugger. The prime need continues to be pitching, but Cashman/Steinbrenner may choose to just build upon the team's strength and try to outslug opponents. I can't see how a deal gets made without Philip Hughes and one of the team's younger highly rated prospects. Even then, it seems like the Brewers could find a better deal.

lee was underrated when with the white sox and is now overrated as a brewer.

More reason to make a trade with another team.

Realistically, the probably could pry a Phillip Hughes type prospect away from an organization. For such a team like the Brewers, they badly need young pitchers.

The loss of Lee will hurt, but I think Corey Hart would lessen the blow. Getting a player like Hughes would be a coup.

Honestly if I'm the Yankees GM I'm standing pat. Carlos Lee is good but Phillip Hughes is one of the best Yankees prospects to come along in a long time. Plus, I think Melky Cabrera's doing an awesome job and these guys are having no troubles scoring runs.

Yeah, if I was the Yankees, hitting would not be my main concern. Sure injuries have plagued them, but they still have a Top 10 offense. The pitching is something that needs to be addressed for the Yankees.

Oh the Yankees will get Zito, just not until free agency after this season

personally, i don't think Zito is the stud ace everyone else makes him out to be. If I were Billy Beane, I would've pulled the trigger on a deal like Zito for Lastings Milledge if it was offered. He had the Cy young season, then a couple more good/solid seasons. If the Yankees pay 60/70/80 million for this guy it won't be that bad because, in my opinion, a Schilling-Beckett-Wakefield combo is better then a Johnson-Mussina-Zito combo.

C'mon, Zito is a great pitcher. If he's your three starter then you got a pretty damn good pitching staff.

The motherf***er has allowed 65 hits in 82 IP, and before his last start had an ERA under 3.00. Why does everyone think this guy is overrated? He's a great pitcher, the Red Sox should go after this guy in the offseason, or the trade deadline.

Zito is a good pitcher, not a great pitcher. And it's true, if he's your three strter then you've got a good staff. However, if you drastically overestimate what your #1 pitcher is capable of then it LOOKS better than it actually is. If the sox had a rotation of Pauley, Beckett and Schilling I could say Schilling as a #3 is tremendous. But RJ isn't doing anything and barely deserves to be called a #1.

Zito would be a #2 for the Yankees, in practice this year, in theory and in practice next year as I'm guessing RJ will retire after this season.

Zito is a #2 pitcher on a good team, a #1 on a mediocre team. I don't call him an ace, a guy like Pedro or Santana is an ace. I agree dustin, if I was Beane, I would have dealt him for Milledge and maybe milk another low-level prospect. In the winter, I would not go after him for the big bucks, this guy may be worth $8 million per year, but nothing more than $10, that's ridiculous.

I don't know...I like "Never Surrender" and "Sunglasses At Night" as much as the next guy...but I don't know if even those jams could take the place of Lee :D
