Id serioulsy consider Moyer and Guardado from Seatlle. Both have been effective lately.

Guardado has a torn rotator cuff. i would stay very far away from him.

He would be great but at what cost considering he is a free agent.

ya thats the only problem I have to. He'd only be a rental. Maybe a guy like Pauley and a low level prospect could do it. I dont know what they would ask.

Theres also the possibility WMP can be that guy when he comes back

pauley and a low level guy will not do it. they would want at least a hansen or a lester and 2 others.

if thats the case, then no way would i trade one of those 2 for a rental who hits .265 with 30 HR with a low OBP

Get a damn power hitter to protect manny.....nixon is useless.
Nixon just isn't getting the barrel of the bat to good fastballs lately and he is popping them up to the left side. This has me baffled since he built his reputation on being a good fastball hitter.

He has a slow bat and no power anymore. That's what injuries will do to a player. The sox are lucky he is done after this year because he making too much money to be a 15 homer guy

Iwatched him take BP on before the final game in Philly. He hit a lot of grounders and he was having trouble getting the barrel on the ball in BP. He was very inconsistent in driving the ball.

his ISOP is .159. For a #5 hitter that is pathetic. get him out of that spot asap.
I'm not too thrilled with Varitek in the 6th spot, so I wouldn't move him to the 5 hole. I'd prefer Lowell, but the smart move is to move Youk to the 5 hole. If they want to walk Manny, they'll have to face guy with one of the top oBP's in the game. That could be a recipe for some very big innings.

Agreed....all Mike Lowell does is hit the damn ball.....why the hell is he not hitting behind Manny...my lineup:

1. Kevin Youkilis

2. Mark Loretta

3. David Ortiz

4. Manny Ramirez

5. Mike Lowell

6. Trot Nixon / Willy Mo Pena

7. Jason Varitek

8. Coco Crisp

9. Alex Gonzalez

Beck, Schmidt and Capuano si si; the rest NYET!!!!!!!!! However, in the NL West the Giants are making one last stand with their aging team and unless they fall apart I don't think they are going to move Jason. As for Capuano, the Brewers are playing fairly well even though they don't stand much of a chance of making the playoffs the way it looks now. Maybe they would like to add another young player or two for the future and would be willing to make a trade. Of course, it would be great for David Pauley to keep pitching the way he did last night and the rest of the crew to stand up big along with the hitters who fell asleep last night.

jimmycarter05, no offense, but I think that's an awful idea. We signed Tek to an extension, he's our captain and he's great with the staff. I don't think Theo would ever consider looking for another catcher unless Tek was hitting something like .051/.122/.197.

The Sox have won 8 in a row now. The defense has been nearly perfect, the bats are warming up, and most importantly the pitching has greatly improved. So what needs fixing? Is this the team that can win the division and make some serious noise in the playoffs?

The pitching situation still is probably the greatest concern.

A bona fide starter to fill the #5 spot would be the answer but there are pitchers in the Sox system now that could fill that role. Can we completely write off Clement and Boomer as possibilities? Both are improving in their respective rehabs and the Sox have some serious $ invested between the two. Plus Jason Johnson has been recently added to the equation, along with recent pickup Kyle Snyder. Is someone in this mix able to fulfill the role of a #5 starter, someone who can keep us in the game and maybe win more than they lose?

For relievers the Sox have made it known that they will be using their organizational depth to look for answers. MDC, Hansen, and new to the team Javier Lopez look like they’ve cemented a spot on the roster. Veterans Tavarez and Seanez haven’t really inspired any great confidence but they can’t be ignored. And the big question is if Foulke can ever regain the level of effectiveness that we saw in 2004, and he’ll be due to come off the DL in the near future. So is this the corps of relievers that can get us through to the late innings when Timlin and Paps will be called upon?

Maybe a bat off the bench with some pop could be another area of improvement. But again Kapler has been called up and so far he’s looking like he’s recovered from his injury. Then there’s WMP who will probably be back on the team in about a month. Because of his lack of options the Sox might find it more desirable for him to spend an extended time on the DL and allow him to get regular AB’s in Pawtucket. But either way by August the Sox should have at least two viable possibilities. So again is there any need to look for a power hitter to fill a bench role?

Just throwing this out there...looking for opinions.

Just because Clement is moving along nicely in his rehab doesnt mean he will have corrected his pitching woes. Its really all just mental. Besides I really cant remember the last time I felt good going into any game with him on the mound. He has found ways to fail in big games the Sox have put him into the past 2 seasons. Cant see any credibility he deserves to last beyond the end of this season.

According to WEEI, he is expected to go to Florida or Pawtucket next week. If all goes well, he'll be back with the Sox before the All-Star break.

Riverside, glad you're with me on the Clement thing. Last season I was a big booster of Matt and defended him on Dirt Dogs and the Red Sox forum until I was totally outnumbered. This year has showed me I was wrong about him. The guy simply cannot pitch under real pressure; he has been yanked from the Padres and Cubs rotation for the same reason he has failed here---he cannot control his pitches and seems to meltdown every time a real crisis develops. Time to cut our loses and write the guy off. Send him down for a rehab and see how he pitches at Triple A. If he cannot dominate down there it is simply a given that his was a mistake and trying to hold onto him because he is owed a lot of money is also deciding to take down the fans and team with him because he will not be effective here anymore than he was in San Diego or Chicago.

I wonder if or when the Sox will make this type of decision, to actually cut Clement and eat most of his contract. His overall value couldn’t be any lower, and even if Theo could pull off some kind of trade, he’d end up subsidizing most of the contract anyway. It sucks that he’s so far gone that even serving as a league-average #5 starter seems like high expectations.

I feel bad for him. He has great stuff, but I remember hearing on the Sox' pre-game one time that Clement said that the last time he felt good was the inning before he got hit with the linedrive. He has also relied on his slider a lot more than he should be. The sinker was what made him successful in the past, and his slider doesn't compensate for the loss of his sinker. He stopped throwing the sinker because that's the ball that has suddenly been hit directly back at him...Bernie Williams (I think) this year right back off his leg, and the infamous linedrive to the head that "I LOVE HANLEY RAMIREZ" girl laughed at <_>

He doesn't mix up his arsenal of pitches as well anymore because he doesn't have confidence in his sinker, and he's afraid to hurl it. The ground ball outs he used to get as a result of the use of his sinker are no longer as common as they were, and as a result, he works too hard to get other pitches to work and ends up with a fatigued arm. I'm not writing him off just yet, he just needs to grow some balls back (I know it's tough, I know), and pitch the damn sinker.

I don't believe the sox will make a big time move at the deadline but they definitely need to add something to the bench.

Probably the best move is a non-move for now. There’s really no urgent need for the team that can’t be waited out until at least toward the end of the trading deadline. That should give the time necessary for some of the injured to return and see what they’ve got left, plus what some of the newer additions like Johnson and Snyder can possibly contribute.

And who knows what will become available over the next few weeks as teams start unloading players…Theo likes those waiver picks.

they need another starter,a guy who can bring it

if they want to win it all that is

if theyre only concerned about being competetive thru october then theyre fine

they just played the B league,it isnt a good indication on how we sit with the elite however.

i was arguing with someone here last week about the validity of the cardinals

i thought that they sucked in spite of their record and that the nl in general are frauds

with the exception of the mets

they look good but again....lets see them in the big boy show
