You're list is out because Ted Williams isn't on it. Let's just go with outfielders in general, no individual positions...

I'll take your infield and staff, but go...

OF - Yaz

OF - Ted Williams

OF - Manny Ramirez

I love Dewey and Jim Rice, but Manny's gonna finish as a better hitter then either...

Williams was obviously one of the greatest hitters of all-time and one of the best people in baseball. I choose Rice over him in leftfield to switch it up a little as well as to show my opinion that Rice deserves a lot more credit then he gets.

Oh, and by the way, Yaz never played second base in his career. He was a outfielder, first basemen, and DH. A few games (33) at third, but never at second. Not meaning to correct you, just making sure that you get the best lineup you want in there. :)

Williams was in left for most of his career - he was very slow but played the wall well. Williams absolutly has to be on the all time team though.Manny should be in there as well if your doing top 3 OF.

It's a pretty tough team to beat. The only change I might make would be Joe Cronin at SS.

Also honorable mentions should go to: Mel Parnell, Tek, Leftty Grove, Lonborg, and Frank Malzone..

Excellent point on Cronin 700. Really should have put him instead of Nomar as when I was making the list I forgot about him. He's in the hall and definitely should be over Nomar.

Red Ruffing, the Babe was mostly a pitcher for the Red Sox though, wasn't he?

yup he was mostly a pitcher for the sox and a very good one.

Posted
yea, but he played a few games at OF in his final years, but I probably should have put him at pitcher(I just didn't want to bump out Red)

Red Ruffing was 39-93 for the Sox, not deserving of even an honorable mention. The Babe was almost purely a pitcher for the Red Sox (and a great one at that). He doesn't deserve consideration for an OF slot. One year part time outfielders don't deserve consideration.

My thoughts exactly. Also, agree with your outfield.

lol, trust me, I know how Red was on the Red Sox, I just wanted to inculde him in, becuase he did play for them, hence my user name, and all my sports posts that are basically about him.

That would probably be the worst defensive outfield in the history of the game.

Why don't we just put Kevin Millar at shortstop for your all-time team?!?!?

This is baseball, people only care about the bats - I'll sacrifice putting three LFs out there just for those bats.

If I was really gonna go by position, I'd have Dewey in Right for sure and I don't know in CF. Speaker? Dom?

I'm a little to young for those guys. :D

Did you ever see Yaz play the OF? Are you aware that he won 7 gold gloves?

First of all the gold glove award is overrated. When people make comments like "he doesn't hit enough to win a gold glove" you really start to scratch your head. When Rafael Palmiero wins the gold glove despite spending the season as a DH...... I put absolutely no stock in that award whatsoever.

Second, even if Yaz was a great defensive left fielder, Williams was a bad defensive left fielder (and would be even worse anywhere else) and Manny is awful. I stand by my assertion that an outfield of Yaz-Williams-Ramirez, no matter how you line them up, would be a terrible defensive outfield.

Williams was actually a pretty good fielder, not great because he didn't have a lot of range. He had really good hands and he played the wall just as well as Yaz. He had a pretty good arm. The weakness in TeddyBallgames's game was not his fielding. It was his base running. Obviously, his fielding didn't compare to his hitting, but he could hold his own in the field, especially at Fenway. Yaz, early in his career, had above average speed. He had a strong accurate arm, and he could play all OF positions, including CF. I think one year he was the oldest starting CF on opening day. If you watched the 1975 ALCS, that was one of the few playoff series that I can remember where an OF beat the other team with his glove. At age 36, he made one big play after another-- diving catches, big throws etc. The weak link in the OF would be Manny, and he is not as bad as people make him out to be. He's no butcher like Mike Greenwell. Williams was above average, and Yaz's (7) Gold Gloves were not over-rated. He was an exceptional fielder who was exceptional in visiting ballparks as well as Fenway
Posted
No way was Yaz overrated because of his gold gloves. Has anyone ever seen the play he made in the ALCS Game 3 in 75 against when he threw out Reggie Jackson trying to extend a single into a double. That play was great and thats one of the reasons Yaz was a great fielder when he made a great play and throw to nail Jackson at second.
