Beckett eyes seventh victory as Red Sox host Devil Rays

Tampa Bay (21-26) at Boston (26-18) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays did not have to face Josh Beckett in either of their first two series against the Boston Red Sox. They won't be that lucky this time around.

The hard-throwing Beckett will be on the mound Thursday when the Red Sox continue their seven-game homestand in the opener of a four-game set against the Devil Rays.

Beckett (6-1, 4.19 ERA) has gone 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts after a three-game stretch in which he went 0-1 with a 9.56 ERA. The righthander allowed four runs - three earned - in seven innings Saturday en route to an 8-4 triumph against Philadelphia.

In three home starts this season, Beckett is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA and is holding opponents to a .212 average.

Tampa Bay counters with Doug Waechter (0-2, 6.63), who yielded three runs in six innings Saturday but did not register a decision in the 4-3 win against Florida. The veteran righthander has faced the Red Sox twice this season, going 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA.

The Devil Rays avoided a three-game sweep against Toronto on Wednesday with a 10-8 triumph. Toby Hall hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh but the primary star was Carl Crawford, who tied a team record with five hits and set franchise marks with five runs and four stolen bases.

Boston lost two of three against the rival New York Yankees this week, capped by an 8-6 defeat on Wednesday. Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis combined for six hits, including three homers, five runs and five RBI in a losing effort.

haha Im sure you got a name mixed up there, Towers is the sorriest pitcher of the Blue Jays Staff who has a 9.00 ERA in 10 starts this season. Hence him being demoted to Triple A. I think you mean Ted Lilly, who will be opposing Haz-Matt Clement next week.

Oops, nice catch riverside! Ya i meant Lilly---too bad we weren't facing toweres instead of lilly!

Youk is really becoming an excellent hitter. He doesn't have a lot of athletic gifts, but he is learning the hitting trade at a rapid rate. When Coco gets back, this lineup will be 8 deep and very strong.

Ok, i must have been asleep at the wheel, but when did papa jack start coaching 1st base? Lynn Jones left in the offseason, and i forget who was doing it earler this year, but now papa jack is over there!

That was some rock that Lugo pulled on the bases last inning. I thought WMP made a nice play off the wall, but the flip by Loretta who was all the way on the other side of 2B...well... for the fans of some teams, such plays become legendary and the player becomes an icon.

i have a question. since when did 100 pitches become the standard for a pitcher? doesn't every pitcher have their own limit, for some maybe 80-90 pitches is max, while for others maybe they can keep going after 120-125.
