You can't have Tiant in there instead of Lefty Grove.

Cy

Wood

Grove

Rajah

Petey

Chronological order.

Grove was a great pitcher but he had his best years with the Philadelphia Athletics and not the Red Sox. Tiant had his best seasons with Boston and was one of the best big game pitchers in the 1970's. I not saying that Grove is a bad pitcher because he is not but I'm just saying his best years were before he came to Boston.

Best years with the Sox.....

Tiant:

1974, 311.1 IP, 132 ERA+

1976, 279.0 IP, 128 ERA+

1973, 272.0 IP, 120 ERA+

1972, 179.0 IP, 169 ERA+

1978, 212.1 IP, 125 ERA+

Grove:

1935, 273.0 IP, 178 ERA+

1936, 253.1 IP, 190 ERA+

1937, 262.0 IP, 158 ERA+

1939, 191.0 IP, 185 ERA+

1938, 163.2 IP, 160 ERA+

Tiant gave more innings, but Grove's quality was better. Plus, Tiant threw a couple of average years in there (100 and 102 ERA+) during his 1972-1978 run, while Grove was excellent for 5 straight years. It's a close call, but I think Grove wins.

Why is Eckersley considered a top 5 sox pitcher? Had he stayed a SP he was never going anywhere. He had two good seasons and was pretty average after that. When I think of Eck, I always think of the A's (and Kirk Gibson).

A lot of people have Eck in there, but he wasnt really a GREAT starter. He was alright in his later days in the roptation, but he's definately a better closer than he is a starter. I think you have to at least start off with this:

Cy Young

Babe Ruth

Roger Clemens

Pedro Martinez

and then you can choose for several people for #5, whether it be Wood or Tiant, or whomever.

Cy Young

Pedro Martinez (circa '99 ASG)

Roger Clemens

El Tiante

Schilling

Seriously?

Yeah, I'd take 2004 Schill over Ruth, 20 win season, most memorable pitching performance ever for the Sox, and a WS title.

Thats why he is on mine. Tremendous story and one of the best seasons a Red Sox pitcher has ever had. I have to consider his games before the Red Sox too though otherwise I wouldn't think the same way about him.

You also gotta consider, hitters have gotten better over the year,s and Schill and Petey have pitchd through the steroid era with still good stats.

Wood (1912)

Young (1901)

Martinez (1999)

Tiant (1974)

Clemens (1990)

CL: Lowe (2000)

Roger

Schilling

Lefty

Lowe

that's right.. say what you want. NO CY YOUNG. probably one of the most overrated pitchers in baseball. so what if he has 500+ wins. it was a completely different type of game back then. derek lowe probably would have had 1000 wins if he played when cy played.

Clemens

Pedro

Tiant

Ruth

Schilling.

I put schill in because of the above reason, his bloody sock performance is probably the most memrobable pitching performance in the history of the franchise. And ruth because if he hadn't switched to the outfield he would have been one of the GREATEST pitchers of all time.

closer: stanley or radatz

i'd pick stanley because he has the most saves of any of the red sox pitchers.(besides Eck who wasn't a closer for us)

Stanley might have more saves but Radatz was much more dominant than stanley ever was.

3. Clemens

4. Schilling

If thats the case then how come everybody wasnt winning 500 games? Granted, it was a different game, but he was still the best pitcher of the era. Should count for something if you ask me.

Brian Rose

Pete Schourek

Mark Portugal

Frank Castillo

Rolando Arrojo

I happen to really like Frank Castillo

I was kind of hoping that the Yankees would have signed him to a Minor League deal last year before he signed with Florida  hah
