Mussina duels Schilling in middle game at Yankee Stadium

Boston (20-12) at NY Yankees (18-12) 7:05 pm EDT

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Much has changed in the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees since Curt Schilling and Mike Mussina last started against each other.

In a rematch of Game One of the 2004 American League Championship Series, Schilling will duel Mussina in the second of three games Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Hobbled by a right ankle injury, Schilling surrendered six earned runs in three innings of a 10-7 loss to Mussina here on October 12, 2004. The Yankees won the next two games before two game-winning hits by Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz brought the ALCS back to Yankee Stadium for Game Six.

With sutures in his ankle resulting in a blood-soaked right sock, Schilling allowed one run and four hits in seven innings of a 4-2 victory. Johnny Damon's grand slam led to a 10-3 triumph in Game Seven for the Red Sox, who went on to sweep St. Louis for their first World Series title since 1918.

While Damon since has switched sides in the rivalry and only a handful of position players remain from Boston's championship team, Schilling and Mussina once again are the top pitchers for their respective teams.

The 39-year-old Schilling (5-1, 3.02 ERA) posted a 1.61 ERA in winning his first four starts of 2006, and the 37-year-old Mussina (5-1, 2.35) has recorded a 1.71 ERA in winning his last four outings.

Schilling claimed his first regular-season win in Yankee Stadium on September 10, when he allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings of a 9-2 triumph. Schilling, who needs three more wins for 200 in his career, is 5-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 lifetime appearances - 10 starts - against the Yankees.

Mussina has not defeated the Red Sox since the 2004 ALCS, going 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA in four starts against them last season. In 46 regular-season starts vs. Boston, Mussina is 17-14 with a 3.38 ERA.

In a game Mussina started on July 14, Schilling came out of the bullpen for his first appearance since being placed on the disabled list nearly three months earlier. Schilling allowed a tiebreaking two-run homer to Alex Rodriguez in the ninth inning of an 8-6 loss.

The Red Sox have won each of the first two meetings of the 2006 season series, posting a 7-3 victory in Fenway Park on May 1 and a 14-3 triumph here Tuesday. Damon has gone hitless in seven at-bats in the two games.

It should be a dandy. Hopefully Schilling continues the way he has been pitching and we can figure out a way to hit Moose. Edit: If you are 6-3 during game threads, my thanks for you starting this one. :)

Haha...eventually were going to run into a team or a pitcher we cant think of an animal for.

EDIT: ALthough thats good, because if we do a dead animal for every game the record is going to end up being normal (100-62) or whatever, and not good like 50-8 or something.

I predicted that the series would get to game 3 with both having a win, so tonight will test that theory. The yanks didnt come to play last night, we'll see who shows up tonight.....

Now tonight's a matchup of aces. As far as I'm concerned, so far Mussina has been the ace of the staff this season. RJ has been a #5 guy who gets Wins because of the big run support.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On WEEI, Terry said that Willie Harris will get the start over Wily Mo in tonight's game. Only reason I think is because Harris has had success against Mussina.

Mike Mussina (46 games vs. Boston, 17-14 record with a 3.38 ERA---Career at Yankee Stadium in 88 games, 47-28 record with a 3.50 ERA)

Kevin Youkilis --

David Ortiz, 7 for 39 (.179 avg) 2 HRs, 5 RBIs, 4 Walks, 16 Ks

Manny Ramirez, 19 for 83 (.229 avg) 2 Doubles, Triple, 5 HRs, 14 RBIs, 7 Walks, 18 Ks

Trot Nixon, 16 for 66 (.242 avg) 7 Doubles, 2 HRs, 10 RBIs, 7 Walks, 17 Ks

Jason Varitek, 5 for 47 (.106 avg) RBI, 3 Walks, 23 Ks

Mike Lowell, 2 for 4 (.500 avg) 2 RBIs

Willie Harris, 5 for 13 (.385 avg) 3 Doubles, RBI, Walk, 5 Ks, 2 SBs

Alex Gonzalez, 1 for 6 (.167 avg) RBI, 2 Ks

///

Doug Mirabelli, 4 for 11 (.364 avg) Double, HR, 2 RBIs, Walk, 2 Ks

Dustan Mohr, 0 for 3, 2 Ks

Why does he play garbage like Harris in a Yankee series?

Because he has more speed to play center and he is 5 for 13 against Mussina. Tito feels this will be a low scoring game.

I'm not saying I agree 100%, but it's probably for these two reasons. One, Schilling is a FB/K pitcher so he wants a better glove in CF. Two, Harris is 5/13 career vs. Mussina.
