Wow. Not sure how to react. I can see both sides of the ball here. I dislike his comments, and he embodies the kind of athlete that I absolutely despise. On the other hand, after seeing the Sox front office business attitude towards people like Arroyo, etc... I don't know. Maybe making a mountain out of a molehill? :dunno:

Boston Red Sox

Closer Keith Foulke minces no words when it comes to his possible free agency: "I'm not going to lie -- it depends on the first and the 15th." Those, baseball purists, are paydays. "It's not really up to me," he told the Boston Herald. "It's up to the guys who wear slacks every day." Thanks for not lying, Keith. Wish you would have.

Nothing rong with that. People play the game for money. Thats why a lot of people hate baseball but he has a right to feel that way.

Can't a problem with what he has said, the only thing is he can't expect to continue to earn the money he is on in his present role as a setup guy.

Better try and get that closer role back Keith!

He won't get it back though. Not with the way Papelbon has been pitching thus far.

He may not be able to get big "Closer" money anywhere, and he would be the perfect successor to Timlin as an 8th inning guy.

Agreed. I put more faith in Foulke than Timlin right now.

At what co$t though?

Remember, we're talking when Foulke is a FA, not now. By that time, there may be a few of Papelbon's old friends from AAA ready for that role. Not to mention off season moves.

Put another way, if someone makes a better offer.... se ya at the 2004 WS reunions in 2014/2024 Keith.

I completely agree with that. I think Foulke has been great thus far.

I have no problem with his comments. Like everyone said before, and just like every other job ... you want to be paid. All I care about is if he's able to dominate when we give him the ball.

He has a great incentive to perform well this year.

so whats so different from the Damon situation? He went to where the money is =P

Damon said, "I can't see myself playing for the Yankees....sometimes it isn't all about the money."

Foulke said, "I will play for who offers the most."

Both followed the money.

Only one seems genuine to me, and that is where the difference lies.

I have always liked Foulke. The truth is, it was a well-known fact when we got him that he isnt an old school kind of player. He does care about his performance and his teamates though, and that's what matters between the lines.

all foulke cares about is foulke. at least he is honest about it.
He is a good team mate. He is not crying for or demanding his closers job. He'll do what the team needs.

The way I see it is that Foulke needs to turn to 04 form to get any decent or near what he has now offers from us. If he does not become the dominant closer he was, then there's no way we're payin him 7 million a year to be a middle reliever. However there's nothing wrong with what he said, SI seems to oversell a lot of things.

how the hell do you plan on getting out of his contract? we signed him for 7 mill a year to pitch for us and that's what he's doing. in fact, he's doing a pretty decent job of it so far. he got injured, it happens. don't burn the guy cus he got injured, paps is the closer and foulke is pitching well. the fact that he's not complaining shows that he's a man.
