Wells returns from DL as Red Sox try to continue winning streak

Toronto (3-4) at Boston (6-1) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - Despite being without their regular leadoff hitter and center fielder, the Boston Red Sox prevailed in their home opener. On Wednesday, they will welcome back one of their winningest pitchers from last season when they host the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle contest of a three-game series.

After Coco Crisp was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken knuckle suffered in Sunday's win at Baltimore, Adam Stern and Kevin Youkilis capably filled in by leading the Red Sox to their fifth straight victory. Stern and Youkilis, replacing Crisp in center field and at the top of the order, respectively, combined to drive in three runs in the second inning of Tuesday's 5-3 triumph.

The 42-year-old Wells (NR), who began the 2006 campaign on the DL following right knee surgery, ranked second on the Red Sox with 15 wins in 2005. He will have a tough act to follow in his first game of the season after Josh Beckett made his Red Sox home debut by allowing just a run and three hits in seven innings.

Wells is fourth among active pitchers with 227 career wins, including 84 in eight seasons as a member of the Blue Jays.

Opposing Wells will be Gustavo Chacin (1-0, 4.05), who tied for Toronto's team lead with 13 wins as a rookie last year. In his first start of 2006, Chacin allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 6-3 win over Minnesota on Thursday.

Frank Catalanotto's eighth-inning two-run homer was one of just five hits Tuesday for Toronto, which has lost three of four games since Chacin's last start.

Oh you bitch, you got to stay home? I feel SO sick right now, but I had to go to school today so I could participate in high school sports after school. I'd so much rather be at home.

Let's just hope and pray that the fatman doesn't "crap the bed" tonight. Every game so far this season i have felt good about before the game---this one makes me nervous! Of course i have wanted to trade him all along!:D

I'm ut for today's game as well, here's today's pitcher vs batter matchups. I'll try to get the pics from yesterday's game loaded into the photo gallery before i leave my house. Here's hoping Wells continues his success in Fenway Park, and rights the ship from his stats against Toronto. As well as Manny to break the cover off the ball. On WEEI, they just reported that Mohr will get the starts in center field when lefty starting pitchers take the mound.

David Wells (19 games vs Toronto, 5-9 record with a 5.50 ERA---Career at Fenway Park in 43 games, 18-11 record with a 4.26 ERA

Troy Glaus, 9 for 28 (.321 avg) 5 Doubles, HR, 7 RBIs, Walk, 5 Ks, 2 SBs

Shea Hillenbrand, 17 for 40 (.425 avg) 4 Doubles, HR, 4 RBIs, 4 Ks, SB

I'm bored in desktop pub too now. I just made a tremendous advertisement saying that Josh Beckett brings the heat with Chile North Rajun Canajun Hot Sauce.

I would love to see Boomer come out and have a good game tonight but as far as I'm concerned he is a giant question mark. I don't know much about his rehab start last week but from what I heard it wasn't pretty. Oh well, come on out and prove me wrong tonight Boomer, help the Sox keep this winning streak alive!

I have the same feelings, that's why I didn't activate him in Fantasy L. #2 and my son and his friend are at the game.

I hope Mohr can actually hit. Didnt he have lie 20 hrs last year? Granted he did play at coors field so who knows what the hell to expect. I think Wells will be fine, probally 6 innings 3 runs give or take. Hopefully Manny will get on track he has had ugly swings this year. Go Sox!!!!

By all means that ball should have been gone. That curve ball was hung. Rios time to think about which field he wanted to hit it out to and he must have slipped or something because that ball had an invitation on it. David Wells looks horrible. Nothing he is throwing has any bite to it. Someone, get a Cy Young plaque and just hand it to Wells because hes gonna win it this year. Oh man.

Wells looks like the out of shape fat man he is. He started off slow last year too though, and when he got hot he was dependable. It won't shock me to see the same thing happen this year.

action in the bullpen in the 2nd...OMG, I only thought that was something you saw in the yankee bullpen

the sox are in game 2 of a 13 game in a row stretch, blowing the pen now could be very interesting....

they'll just go to dinardo for 4-5 innings most likely

not surprised by this performance by wells. he hasnt looked good at all this year, in spring training and at pawtucket.

How does sending DiNardo out for some LRP blow the 'pen? Especially when the SPs have gone 7 innings in 5 of 7 starts thus far. Keep trying.
