They used to scout heavily in asia and signed a bunch of minor leaguers like sun woo kim, seung song, jin ho choo, sang lee, tomo ohka.......all guys that really turned out to be nothing.

Right, right. COmpletely forgot about those guys. You're right. My mistake.

I'm sorry if it sounds somewhat bias, but can anyone tell me the last Asian player the Sox signed that actually did anything ? Yes this SFOC. This signing is a joke in MHOP.

What is your point, that Asian players can't play ball? Look around the major leagues - there are plenty of Asian ballplayers. Also, the last time I checked, two of the final 4 teams in the world baseball classic were Korea and Japan.

The Sox haven't had success yet with Asian players, I completely agree, but I'd say that's more the fault of Duquette's farm program. The Sox barely produced any prospects of note, of any nationality, while Duquette was in charge.

Ok maybe this is just me but does anyone else see some sort of trade in the works?

We have an excess of set up men and about a billion infielders. There are too many roster players and osmetihngs gotta give.

I don't know what the front office is doing here but it wouldn;t shock me at all to see a big trade coming up.

I don't know how you can expect a big trade. The Red Sox have just about all of their postions filled.

Unless you count Dustin Mohr for Rheal Cormier as a big trade, I'm rather curious to know what you meant.

I'm thinking of a possible Manny move or maybe even Trot

Edit:Spelling

It's possible, but extremely unlikely. Unless Cliff Floyd is sniped by a rabid Braves fan, there is no match for the Red Sox to move Manny Ramirez. I just don't see how people are drawing the links of a Hee Seop Choi waiver wire pickup, to a trade of two regulars.

Someone said something about a trade and I gave two likely names. I forgot Wells, though... I'm with you thinking that those two trades are highly unlikeable.

The sox should cut Lowell and move Youk back to third

i know this is off topic but youk hasent prove anything else except for his OBP wich was 400 last year mind you it was only in 80 at bats , i see him as a 270 hitter at the most who strikes out quite a bit too every 4.5 at bats ,i know this is only spring training but he isnt doing s*** right now ,and pitchers arent even at their best

Snow isnt the starter Youk is. Every time there has been the normal lineup out there Youk has been a part of it

I understand, but Youk gets injured. What do you do?

i just remebered that Choi was invited to HR Derby that must count for something

Yes, it counts to the fact that he is the only Korean position player in the Majors and last year's HR Derby was the first one where the participants represented countries.

This is good pick up since it provides some insurance in the Minors without costing much in return. For a team with the Sox resources and their question marks at corner IF positions, the $750K salary due to Choi is a drop in the bucket for the insurance he provides.

To whoever mentioned Choi's PECOTA comp to Oritz circa 2003. Let's take that with a grain of salt. I mean, Ortiz' 2003 line of .288/.369/.592/.961 with 14.5 AB/HR is very similar to Choi's 90th % projection line of .289/.400/.560/.960 with ~15 AB/HR. However, there is only a 10% chance that Choi's 2006 will match or exceed that (90th % forcast means that there is a 90% chance that the numbers will be below the numbers listed).

in other news marte didnt even make the big league roster for the Guardians--though he had a pretty formidable spring training

I gotta think they are planning some kind of move-

That's understandable, seeing as that Boone and Blake are both ahead of him.

He'll be up for good come June.

This is Aaron Boone's last season of his contract. if he gets off to another slow start, I dont think that they'll hesitate to send Marte up to the Bigs

I caught the end of today's game on NESN and they had Youk playing 3rd today with Snow starting at 1st and Choi coming in later. (he went 0-1 with a groundout)

As far as Marte goes, i can see the Guardians dumping boone at the first sign of trouble this year!

Projecting Hee Seop Choi to David Ortiz status is dangerous, just because he came out of nowhere and EXPLODED in Boston.

That having been said, Hee Seop is a smart pickup for Boston. He's cheap, he's solid offensively, and he's got POTENTIAL. He didn't cost them a damn thing.

Our current left handed backup first baseman hit .275/.343/.365 last year.

Hee Seop hit .253/.336/.453.

Snow's marginally better with the average and on base percentage, but Hee Seop had more power despite playing in Los Angeles, a pitchers' park.

I just wanted to throw another stat line out there for comparison. This is Carlos Pena's 2005 MLB stats (in 260 ABs): .235 .325 .477

He's got the most power of any of the three, but he also strikes out the most (95 K's in 250 ABs). That having been said, Detroit is also a pitchers' park and he seems to have better plate discipline than Snow.

Choi has the best eye (based on the stats), Pena has the best power numbers (but not by much), and Snow had a decent average but his power production was pretty sad. He's obviously here as a defensive replacement for Youkilis who's going to get an occasional start against tough righties.

I don't know anything about Pena or Choi's defense, but if either one are above average they're probably just as good as Snow at this point in his career. I can see Snow in town to help tutor Youkilis on the position, but I could see if Snow doesn't produce Choi getting a callup.

On that note I wouldn't mind snagging Pena and DHing one of those 2 in Pawtucket. Pena tore up AAA last season (4-A player?) and could be another option in case of injury or ineffectiveness. In my mind, depth is rarely a PROBLEM. Especially with Lowell, and Youkilis huge question marks going into the season as far as offensive production.

we picked him up because he is a great defensive first baseman, not so good offensively but that could change in fenway and in the lineup we have, i think he is a great pickup considering lowell hasnt shown anything in spring training + he's cheap

Choi is not the answer for the Red Sox. The Red Sox from Boston need a strong player from Japan who can hit behind David Ortez & Manny.

I thought you said you were a Red Sox fan? You don't even know how to spell Papi's name?
