Actually, the US can lose and go on to the semi's. The first TB (tie-breaker) is head-to-head, and the second is RA/9 against teams in the tie. If the US loses to Mexico, then there will be 3 teams with a 1-2 record, and all three would be 1-1 in games against the other two. That means the runs-allowed per nine-innings against each other would determine who advances. In games involving those three teams, they have given up the following amounts of runs.

US - 3 (against Japan)

Japan - 5 (against US/Mexico)

Mexico - 6 (against Japan)

Here's a breakdown of the advancing scenarios for each team from the WBC site:

Damn, ORS. You are ON TOP of this stuff. Good work.

Are the semi-finals and finals going to be shown live, or delayed? I am worried since the games will be played on the West Coast.

I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is live.

Well......hopefully the USA can beat Mexico tonight....I haven't been keeping up the last couple of days....do we automatically advance to the semi finals if we win tonight? Or is there a point margin? :dunno:

Is Buck Martinez the dumbest person alive? He's certainly making his case tonight. How do you start an 0-13 Teixeira over a 5-14 (3 HR in 4 games played) Derrek Lee in an elimination game? How do you put the weaker-armed Vernon Wells in RF and the guy with the cannon, Francouer, in LF? Someone check the guy for a pulse.

the ESPN announcers were pegging it on Francouer who was leaning off of 2nd, but still most of blame should go to Buck Martinez. You have 2 men on with on outs, Michael Young who is 4 for 13 (.308 avg) in the series and you are having him bunt?

I hate bunting in general because your giving away outs but that was just flat out terrible. How do you have the ML hits leader bunt?

Well Derrek Lee is hurt that is why he is not starting

Oh, I didn't hear that he was hurt. Buck's still a fool, though.

Korea vs Japan is gonna be a bloodbath. I can't wait.

Same here (now I don't really have anything to be opposed to when it comes to the WBC. )

Go Korea!

Wow, the US lost to Mexico and Canada in the same tournament. Third best on the continent. Yay!

EDIT: spelling

That they did, like in tonight's game in the 8th inning had Griffey hitting a line drive down the 1st base line which was stopped by gonzalez. The 1st base umpire motioned it was foul, giving Griffey another chance. Even though the instant replay showed the abll was clearly inbounds up until Gonzalez had stopped it

or hire more crooked umpires.

Yea really.

Whats the deal with the WBC umpires? I know they arent MLB umps, but what are they? Anybody know, or know where I can get some info on this?

Well, before the whole thing started my prediction for the final 4 was the 4 powerhouses; Japan, USA, Cuba, and the DR. Looks like I went 3-4 in this one. Though, when the tournament started and I saw a few games my pick went to Korea, and now that they have officially advanced I can officially say the're my pick (couldnt say that before due to conflict with my Final 4 pick). So mark my words, either Korea or Cuba. Although i'll be pulling for Japan.

Also, did anybody notice when Buck put Johnny into pinch run in the 9th, that he did it for A-ROD! A-Rod is a guy who doesnt lack in the speed department. Not that it mattered in the end, but it would have made a LOT more sense to pinch run Johnny for Chipper Jones and not Rodriguez. Just something I had to get off my chest.

..ok so... USA 09!! (or Italia :D)

Some of them I believe might be major league umps.....There are some that are former major league umps who were part of the resignation a few years back and I think some are minor league umps.

This is from the World Baseball Classic Website

Q: Who will select the umpires for the World Baseball Classic?

A: Umpires will be chosen by World Baseball Classic, Inc. The majority of the umpires selected for the tournament will be professional umpires familiar with Major League Baseball's Official Baseball Rules.

Right, but I remember during the telecast Selig saying that hopefully they could get some MLB umps in there for 09. Meaning that these guys arent MLB umps.

But thanks for the help man.

The US is out and that is a national disgrace. Thanks ARod for once again proving that you are a loser par excellence. Personally, I had little interest while the US was alive and none now that they have been eliminated.

It wasn't just Arod that did nothing it was the whole team and the whole philosophy. Buck Martinez should have stayed with a set lineup and he didn't while teams like Japan and Korea had set lineups. There were too many lineup changes by the US and that is a huge reason why they had no chemistry and are now eliminated.

This is 700 we're talking about here. All the blame goes to A-Rod, of coarse.
