manny has never been big about playing in these allstar type of tournaments as he pulled out of the japan tour a few years ago.

I don't believe that is the reason why. He probably would be proud to represent his country, but the problem is, that Manny would have to actually go play hard for a few innings. Nowadays, that's close to impossible for Mr. Ramriez to do that.

not everyone is proud to represent their country. there are many players that have backed out of this tournament and would rather focus on what is more important and that is there season. manny uses spring training to get his timing down and take as many swings as possible in the cage. most likely this is a compromise with him pulling out of the tournament in order to show up at a later date.

Uh guys, America is Manny's country. He became a citizen in 2004. Of course, I am elated if the story is true. At least he will be in camp and getting to know his new teammates, and, especially so, they getting to know him. The latter ought to be a culture shock for messrs Loretta, Lowell, Crisp, Beckett and the rest of the new crowd.

You would be correct on your assumption. Later in "Red Sox Now" followed by "FSN New England", the Sox have come to a compromise.

Manny will report the latest date possible, that being March 1

--Manny will not take part in the WBC

--Also Big Papi will stay in spring training along with Manny.

I've got tickets to D.R. vs. Australia, so I was looking forward to seeing Manny launch a couple of bombs, but I have to say that this doesn't disappoint me.

I'm tellin ya man. This thing needs to be moved to November, after the World Series, from now on. This is ridiculous.

I agree whole-heartedly. More & more players are dropping out as each day goes by. By next week who knows who else will have dropped out to instead get ready for the new season.

if this is moved to november we will be able to see some of the better pitchers for the US like roy halladay and chris carpenter or even tim hudson take part instead of guys like todd jones on the team

Imagine how few players will want to do it in 4 years. It will be like Olympic basketball, but worse...

Or...it could be like the world cup. :dunno:

As I recall Manny showed a slow bat and had an awful spring last year that actually carried over into the first few weeks of the season. Maybe this shows some committment on his part to start the season in good shape, or he just doesn't care (more likely).

Apparently he's not showing up until March 1st due to he is right now going through a new training regimen to work on his swing. In 2005 he didnt dominate lefties as much as in the past, and he was chasing more balls thrown out of the strike zone

now if only we can get varitek out of this tournament
I wish MLB would cancel the WBC. IMO is that it is going to be a bomb. I have no interest in this tournament.

I bet it'll still draw quite a bit of viewers considering we're all hurtin for some baseball.

The D.R. vs. Venezuela game was sold out a month ago. And, I could only get LF general admission lawn seats for D.R. vs. Australia. I don't know what kind of staying power this thing will have, as I think it depends on how it is played, but the fans are interested. I know I'm looking forward to it.

it would have much more interest if it was after the season than before. with great players dropping out constantly the tournament is losing some of the lust it may have had.

Count two more out

David Dellucci will not go to the WBC, instead like other players to get ready for the season.

Vernon Wells will miss out on the 1st round due to tweaking his left leg a couple of days ago. The team I bet will have him stay at camp for the other rounds even if his leg feels better.

That's their mistake. There will be MLB at the same time. I'll be watching the Grapfruit Games.

Hammer, I'm with 700 Hitter on this World Cup or whatever they are calling it. I have absolutely no interest in it at all. What I worry about is that some players might not be in the best shape possible when the tournament takes place and they suffer a serious injury that keeps them out of action for awhile. I'm thinking specifically of David Ortiz. Think of how his loss could hurt us; it could devastate our chances this year.
