MANNYHOF24: We allready have like 4 setup guys, face it Papelbon has to start.

Easy... stop making the vendetta that I dont want Papelbon in the rotation. i do WANT him to start. Im just going by from what Ive heard in the papers, tv, radio, etc. As for Clement in the pen, that just couldnt work. Clement automatically has a spot beacuse of confidence from the front office, let alone he's got 2 years left at $17 million

EDIT: Maybe during the trading deadline, Sox could go to the Brewers of a Clement for Carlos Lee swap. I do still see Clement being traded sometime from now to the next offseason. He'll have to be done with anyway.

Starters signed through next year

Curt Schilling (World series win had made his 2007 option guaranteed)

Tim Wakefield (07 option)

Josh Beckett (i believe he is arbitration eligible in the 06 offseason)

Matt Clement

Bronson Arroyo

Jonathan Papelbon

Jon Lester

They'd better get Wells out soon though. He sounds like he's been separating himself from the rest of the team while awaiting a trade, and if he isn't traded, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts causing problems in the clubhouse.

he isnt really, w/e theo is prolly trying to reason with him, have Faith in Theo.

and the reason he isnt really participating is b/c he cant throw off the mound now thats my big q if he got surgery at the same time as clement yet clement is htrowing off the mound

MannyHof, I did not know Papelbon was that old and I couldn't now agree with you more. What the hell are the Red Sox waiting for? They seem to be very reluctant to break in their young players and this crappola cycle of trading and signing vets might be rearing its ugly head again. If this keeps up we could have a backlog of talented young players clogged up in double and triple A. Time for flood tide; get these guys into the lineup and fast. Youk and Pap now; Pedroia and Lester very very soon, Murphy, Hansen, Lowrie, Pinckney and Ellsbury down a short road. Epstein was instrumental is reviving our farm system; now is the time to start benefiting from it.

Well here goes Monster Mom. Pedroia plays shortstop next year; Gonzales goes. Pinckney plays third base in two or three years as Lowell goes; Ellsbury plays centerfield as Crisp moves to left when Manny leaves; Lowrie plays second in two years when Loretta leaves ( or they could flip Dustin and Jed around); Murphy plays rightfield after Trot leaves; Youk is stil young enough to play first for many years. There, you have your infield and outfield for the future. Lester, Papelbon are moved into the rotation as soon as possible taking the place of Wakefield and Arroyo. Walla!!!!! We have a good team ready to take on the world and still have DH David Ortiz at DH. Ellsbury, Pedroia and Crisp gives us speed; Pinckney, Lowrie and Murphy give us some power; we have Lester and Pap to join Beckett to give us three top notch starters in the rotation, and Hansen and Delcarmen become closer and set-up man. There you have it.

This is a perfect strategy if every one of our prospects reach their full potential. Of course you have a better chance of hitting the lottery than Pedroia, Pinckney, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Murphy, Hansen, Delcarmen, Lester, and papelbon all becoming above average major league players capable of leading a team to the post season.

Yeah, seabeach, you can't just rush prospects in, though future potential stars like Papelbon, Lester, pedroia and such could possibley hand it. But we already somehwat wrecked Cla Meredith's confidence when we rushed him up. Also Papelbon has never pitched over 130 innings, so putting him as a reliever for 1 season might not be a bad idea. He could make spot starts and maybe total up to 100+ if all goes well, maybe even more.

I'll give you credit for coming up with all that. But the Red Sox are big spenders, so the chances that in the next couple years we will sign a big free agent name to take the place of Nixon, Ortiz, or Lowell. Unfortunately, some of those prospects will never reach potential or will be traded.

Schilling couple of days ago had a solid 16 min. throwing session (63 pitches) and allowed just one solid liner. Beckett & Papelbon in their sessions have taken suit

Beckett puts on a show: Stuff is ‘pretty filthy’

By Jeff Horrigan/ Red Sox notebook

Monday, February 27, 2006 - Updated: 02:27 AM EST

FORT MYERS - Like Curt Schilling one day earlier, Josh Beckett wowed observers during his first session throwing batting practice yesterday. The 2003 World Series MVP overpowered hitters during the 10-minute, 32-pitch workout and only allowed two solidly hit balls. “He had pretty filthy stuff,” rookie Dustin Pedroia said. “He’s telling us where it’s going and it was still tough to hit. He looks like he’s in midseason form.” Josh Pressley, a nonroster invitee who hadn’t faced Beckett since summer league play as high schoolers in the late 1990s, was just as wowed.

“He’s got electric stuff, even this early,” Pressley said. “With the cage around you, you feel you have no place to go.” Jonathan Papelbon, who was pitching BP on an adjacent field, also left a similar impression in his workout. “It’s very obvious he really worked hard this winter,” Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He came into camp very well prepared and ready to go. He’s not playing catch-up.”

Posted
Boston Globe: Jon Lester were among those who threw live BP, Ortiz losing the grip on his bat after one particularly nasty Lester breaking ball. ''Did you see me put my bat down?" he said. ''He threw good. But his velocity was not the same out of the stretch. He'll learn."

Promising report to say the least, if this kid can be able to psyche Papi out.

Well Monster Mom, a free agent or two for a top notch starter or a slugger will be fine but unless Theo is full of s*** he will adhere to his plan of getting good young players in the lineup----or let's just say the hell with a farm system. We have good prospects and we can field a hell of a team in a few years with those guys. Let's not waste this talent because it could play together for a dozen years. Unless there is an outstanding, and I mean outstanding free agent out there, let's stay the course and let these kids get a chance to show what they could do. The drafts have been very good; take advantage of it.

I can see it in two or three years----Beckett, Papelbon and Lester, maybe the best threesome in the American League. That is, if we make sure they stay with us and not get away in some stupid trade, or later on allowed to leave via free agency. Monster Mom called the Red Sox big spenders. Well here's three pitchers you must be willing to spend big on because they are outstanding. In relief, Hansen and Delcarmen will be solid as well.

I agree that they will probably be outstanding, my none of them has proven anything yet, except for maybe Beckett for a couple games in the World Series.

His under 4 career ERA and his almost 3-1 K-BB ratio didn't impress you?

Posted
I think it is just far too early to call any of them outstanding.

Near 3-1 K-BB ratio is impressive after 4 full seasons. After 1 year I can understand saying it's too early, but 4 years makes it a trend, and shows he's capable of doing it every year.

Unfortunately though he has never pitched more than a 180 (and most of the time less) innings in a season. My definition of an outstanding pitcher includes one that can hold up and pitch the whole season.

He's pitched more innings and more games every year of his career, and god I don't know how many times we're going to have to go over this but almost ALL OF THE TIME HE MISSED WAS DUE TO BLISTERS!!!!!!!!!

Does Boston have special, magic blister medication?

ya know if you'd read the 39487698437659832765982364598237456982376458923745678 posts about this you'd know that blisters are caused by pitching in heat ... like the heat ... ya know ... in Florida where he used to pitch.

So no boston doesn't need "magic blister medication" it's just called getting him out of the heat.
