Red Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace has been hospitalized in Spartanburg, S.C., the past few days after suffering an infection in his hip that could keep him out of spring training and possibly part of the regular season.

Manager Terry Francona said newly appointed bullpen coach Al Nipper will fill in for Wallace. Nipper served as Boston's pitching coach in 1995 and 1996.

Get better soon Dave.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Roger Clemens and Nipper are/were very close friends, right?

This could be very serious, actually. Hip replacements are extremely dangerous due to these infections. This is what unexpectedly killed Dick Schaap a couple of years ago and what just claimed the life of Jack Snow, J.T's father. I would suspect there is an outside chance he might be out for a much more extended period, maybe the season.

But this could be spun into a positive...correct me if I'm wrong but Roger Clemens and Nipper are/were very close friends, right?

Damn it, that sucks! Hang in there Dave.

Yaz's son died after the same type of operation.

Septic arthritis could be a very bad problem indeed. His past history of hip replacement makes him have a spot for infection to start. It is nasty, but it can be treated, he should be okay. Schaap's was different because it was post-op....

Is there any indication on how long Wallace could be out?

depends on the bacterium and the response to therapy. It also depends on whether he went septic or if it stayed localized. It sounds like they caught it early, which means he should be fine in a month or two....

Get well Dave.

That hip replacemant was done nearly 10 years ago.

It's not a new surgery...I hope he'll be alright.

Get better Wally :(

Pitching coach Dave Wallace, hospitalized a couple weeks ago with an infection in his hip that spread through his body, has been hospitalized again. Wallace was expected in camp no sooner than early-to-mid-March but at this point he could miss all of camp. There's also a possibility that Wallace, who had a hip replaced several years ago, might need another replacement. If so, Wallace might not be able to return this season

Wow, something weird about watching Nipper handle the pitching staff. Hopefully Wallace will have some input and contact with the team when they are home. We have been blessed to have him here, he is very well respected as one of the best in the biz. Get well soon Dave!
