The sox are gonna keep him long term if he continues to play like this.

 Every dog has his day... he might do well but this 1 year thing is just a stop gap ad if we do sign him on longer its for trade only.

Sorry to burst your bubble but its really just a 1 year contract for a reason, to give Dustin Pedroia more time in the minors

Actually I agree with you. Every now and then a player comes along that embraces the oppotunity to play in Boston and steps his game up. If that happens the Red Sox probably would offer him a longer contract. Perhaps all he needs is one adjustment in his swing and he will be a force. I've seen it happen..

LOLOLOL, never has a non-MLB HR been blown out of proportion more than this one. Hell, Bubba Crosby hit a walkoff once, maybe we should sign him long term and start him over Damon.....

*interprets post to read like Gonzo had signed with the MFY's*

What a swing, this guy is totally clutch and showing major power. He should hit 30 -35 homers this year, which will add up nicely along with Arod's 60+, Giambi's 50+, and Matsui's 45ish. Man, nobody's even going to notice Jeter's 30+HR/100+RBI season this year.

If for some reason he does play like this for Boston, he would demand alot more money next year and why would the Sox pay it to him with Pedrioa coming up behind him?

Gonzalez is a career .291 OBP guy in the bigs. That sucks. Three games in the Caribbean Series means jack s*** right now. First, it is a obscenely small sample size. Second, it's just Winter Ball. If AGon can get his OBP up around .350 or so, hit for some power, and field well in Fenway, then they should consider keeping him more than one year. But, until he does that, he shouldn't be more than a one year stopgap.

People think Pedroia is going to be good because he has been good throughout the minors. If the guy wasn't 5 '8 or whatever he would likely have gone much higher in the draft; everyone knew he had tools and a great personality but they were scared of his body. He has tremendous patience at the plate and some pop too. Oh yeah, he was also 2003 NCAA defensive player of the year, and the 2005 Red Sox Minor League Offensive Player of the Year. The guy has won award after award coming through and pretty much everyone who sees him play agrees that he will be a very productive major leaguer. Again, its all about the plate discipline.

It is worth noting, however, that 1) you're right that he hasn't played a MLB game yet, and 2) I think the sox are VERY open to the idea of getting ANOTHER short stop for their future, if the right guy came along. Pedroia would be great at 2nd or SS, but if you get the chance to land a top-notch SS you should, because Pedroia projects to be the best 2nd baseman in the game IMHO.

Pedroia is a tweener player. Nobody really knows where he belongs. He has the size of a 2b, but the hands of a SS. BUT, one thing that any scouts are having trouble predicting is his ability to hit in the bigs. The general consensus is that he should hit for average and he should continue the great patience he has had thus far in the minors, but his slugging is something that will be extremely hard to predict. He is a guy of small stature and against solid MLB pitching and in some of the larger MLB parks, he may have trouble hitting the tater. Then again, he is known for "surprising pop" out of such a small guy, so who knows. My inclination is that the sox will take their time this spring and keep him up basically right until the end. They will assess his skills next to one of the best defensive SS's in the game in Gonzalez. If Pedroia holds his own and shows that his arm and size will be overshadowned by his range and hands, then he will be the SS of the future. If he gets to camp and Pedroia looks like he is a little too weak for SS, then he'll be your 2b of the future. Either way, both players currently filling those positions, Loretta and AGon, are in the last yrs of their contracts, so they can afford flexibility. My prediction is that Pedroia becomes your 2b of the future based on size alone, just take a look around the league and the only true small SS's that have had success are Furcal and Eckstein.....

Hopefully he can do that for the Sox. Hit like he did last night.

He has his moments, (2003 vs the yankees), but he is not a really good offensive player. He was obtained for defense and defense only. He is against every single code there is in the moneyball formula. He has no eye and he has a huge swing that causes him to K too much. He'll be a one yr quick fix for you guys and he might be a late inning defensive replacement by the end of this yr....

You may be a homer, but this is pretty close to what I was thinking too.

EDIT: I do think he'll hit 15+ home runs though.

His power hit last yr always makes people speculate. You usually dont see 2 guys in a lneup go from totalling 50HRs one yr then following it up with 13 the next yr. I know the home ballpark had something to do with that, but you still have to wonder what changed between 2004 and 2005 to make such a monster difference. I dont think Gonzalez will be a power threat, as a matter of fact, I think he'll still have single digit taters and keep his average right about where it is, if not drop it. Then again, if last yr was truly a fluke, then your prediction of 15 might not be far off....

Also, take a look at his career. Gonzalez has had 3 yrs in which he hit for power and 3 in which he did not. Last yr, he actually got more disciplined and had his second highest average and the highest OBP of his career, but it came at the expense of his power. Also, saying that .265 was the second highest average of your career and .319 is the highest OBP of your career is pretty bad. Overall, this guy will be a black hole at the 9 spot with the occasional good AB and a good likelihood of a ton of K's...

Basically we got Bellhorn back but this time with more of a slick glove

Oh NO, you didnt. You got Bellhorn back with a slightly less penchant for the K but also one third the walks....

Riverside, amen to that. Nothing must keep Pedroia out of our lineup. He is quite a prospect and one that combines good hitting and good fielding, speed and a passion for the game. Besides, isn't Gonzo's OBP less than 300? One year and out.

Thanks "J". BTW, is there anyway to get notices on my E-Mail Board when someone on this website is answering one of my posts? I have to come here and find out for myself without any inkling someone has contacted and answered one of my posts.?

Thank you. Done. It was so simple I feel like a fool for not finding it. This is a good board; some real nice guys here. Besides, the trolls we get here know a little about baseball, not like two others I'm on where they come and make complete asses out of themselves. Why is it that we Red Sox fans by and large know so much more about the game of baseball that fans of other teams? Just my opinion mind you, but I think there is a lot of truth to that.
