It would probably take lester, delcarmen, and maybe pedroia something the sox will not do. the drays ask for the moon for their guys. cantu is a budding star and why would the drays trade their best positional player in the majors right now. plus i don't even think he can play shortstop because he really is not that great defensively.

Truthfully, I think if the price is to much for a good SS or a CF we should use Harris as the everyday player for one of them. He's fast, and when he's been given an oppurtunity, he's manged about a .343 OBP, and with a great hitting coach that can improve to around .360-.370. Plus he's fast.

700 hitter, Harris will be a good utility player who can come off the bench to steal a base or take over for defensive purposes late in games where we are ahead. No one, however, should be deluded into thinking that he is going to be our centerfielder. He has no power, is a weak hitter and the fans seeing him out there taking Johnny Damon's place would eat him alive. Let the guy do what I think he was brought over to do, steal some bases, bunt a runner over and serve as a late inning replacement.

he was signed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. its a low risk deal. the red sox are creating competition and depth at the same time.

I am still not excited.

I know it's not a big time player, but people like Harris are players that you need on a team. Harris has speed, shows a tremendous amount of hustle in the field (I remember that collision with Magglio Ordonez in 2004) and his OBP isn't that bad either so he has shown he can get on base. I don't expect him to start but he should be a solid option off of the bench.

wow.....a real negative fan for a team that won the world series only 2 short seasons ago
I'm not negative, but I don't get excited about players like Harris. I wouldn't equate him with Pokey, because Pokey was a defensive super-talent and I knew that about him before he came to the Sox. There is nothing extraordinary about Harris. I've seen hundreds like Harris come and go into oblivion in a blink... some may even have been named Harris. So, I am not real charged up about the acquisition. If we acquired Franco Harris, I'd be more excited.

im sorry he is not a star player but he is a player that can help this team. the red sox don't need to be made up of stars players through the entire roster in order to win games.

Duh, I realize that, but there is nothing interesting about signing a bench player. There is no reason to analyze this move. He is a dime a dozen. No one puts their hard earned $ down to see Willie Harris. In fact, most fans would be disappointed if they got the game and Harris was starting instead of Loretta. I get the concept. Teams need depth on the bench, but this guy is not even a special bench player. I'd much rather have signed Jeff Davannon, who is superior to Harris in every aspect. God, do I have to be thrilled about every acquisition they make? It's just not worth the effort to discuss. Do I also have to be thrilled about the new kid from Down Under, Mate?

i guess you will only be happy when they acquire stars. i don't pay to see star. i pay to see wins. you don't need stars to win games.
Why is my happiness or lack thereof so important to you. Willie Harris will contribute to far fewer wins than anyone of the stars. He is an average bench player with no major tools or talents. His acquisition makes me neither happy or unhappy. He is a nobody, and I only hope that the team stays healthy enough that he see very little playing time. Are we so desperate to talk baseball that we will continue to debate this acquisition?

I agree with 700. Harris is nothing special, and hearing about a signing like this doesn't make me happy or excited, but I'm indifferent to it. Okay, it's another guy who can run for us, but the point is he can't bat... if I remember correctly he has a .196 career batting avg. and he's nothing more than a late innings pinch runner. Those don't normally make me happy, but I'm not saying I'm not happy...

he has a .242 career batting average....that .196 average was for that bum trent durrington we signed.
You are not excited about the kid from Down Under? lol! We finally agree. Resist the temptation to change your mind.
