Agreed, Arroyo is expendable for Crisp, who should do well here, but is this contingent on Damon and what he does? or is it goin down no matter what? I wouldn't mind having him in RF.

Yeah, Arroyo should stay just becuase he has a year or two to reach his peak where as Clement is already somewhat there. Also Clement wa sjust never the same after Tampa.

so which one is it..

Both are expendable for Crisp in my eyes, if you had read the posts the subject switched as to what we would rather deal for him, and I would rather deal Arroyo.

You would rather deal Arroyo instead of Clement? True Clement is probably the better pitcher, but Arroyo would be much willing to pitch from the bullpen or be the 6th starter, unlike Clement, and possibly if we could get rid of his salary, we'd save about 16 million.

In a perfect world, I'd much rather keep Arroyo than Clement.

Clement has the better stuff I'll agree, but Arroyo seems much tougher mentally, plus he is willing and able to start or relieve, which makes him more valuable to a staff. Arroyo too is much much cheaper than Clement.

According to media out of Seattle, the Mariners' pending deal with Washburn means one of two senarios: They'd rather trade for Arroyo, or the Red Sox need to take on a contract in order to trade Clement. I would absolutely make this deal, rumored in that report:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2002690176_mari18.html

Matt Clement to Seattle for Jeremy Reed and Gil Meche. YES, Gil Meche has been steadily declining over the past few years and may turn out to be a complete bust for Boston. But at $2.5 mil is cheaper and younger than Matt Clement. Jeremy Reed is obviously the prize in the trade, a decent CF prospect with great defense and a developing bat. The advantage to having Reed in the fold is that it takes the pressure off of the Red Sox to resign Johnny Damon, which might actually lower the cost of bringing Johnny back as a potential left fielder if Ramirez is dealt-- or Reed could just be a cheaper alternative to Damon.

In dealings with Seattle, I would insist on getting either Mike Morse or Jose Lopez in the deal. If we have to add a little more (maybe an Abe Alvarez) that's fine. Either one of these guys are considered very good shortstop prospects and could compete for a starting job.

After that deal is complete, I would still strongly consider sending Arroyo to Cleveland for Coco Crisp. I honestly think we've seen the best of Arroyo (#4 starter or average setup man) and if we can get a 26 year old productive outfielder with a great glove for him-- do it. Crisp is further insurance for Nixon (who gets hurt just about every year) or if Reed doesn't produce-- and there is still a very real possibility that Manny Ramirez is not with the team-- in which case Crisp would play every day anyway. If the team acquired Crisp and Reed and Ramirez decided he wanted to stay, Nixon could be dealt for pitching help.

If we make both those trades, we'd still have a decent rotation:

Schilling, Beckett, Wakefield, Wells*, Meche, Papelbon

*Wells is also potential trade bait, but if he was traded we'd obviously need a starter in return.

IMO-- we could make both of these trades and still be a strong team.

I wouldn't want Mike Morse on the Red Sox, the guy told the commission he was using steriods and that their system failed.

Cardinals Interested In Coco Crisp

According to 2005 WARP (a Baseball Prospectus stat that combines offense and defense), Coco Crisp was the game's 8th best left fielder in 2005. He won't be a free agent until after the 2009 season, according to Unofficial Major League Baseball. For a Cleveland club in need of an additional bat, trading Crisp away doesn't seem reasonable. For the price, Crisp is a nice guy to have around.

Nonetheless, a couple of sources are saying the Guardians are definitely entertaining offers and the Cardinals have inquired. As useful as Crisp is, it's never a bad idea to entertain offers.

Via the trustworthy Hawg Wild, Viva El Birdos confirms the Cards' interest. Lboros has the scoop on some other Cards buzz going around as well.

I can't vouch for this link, which comes via the grapevine and has a story with it.

Jason Marquis for Crisp would seem to be an even swap, but that's just speculation. You can check out Baseball America's top ten prospects for the Cardinals here; it's possible a package of a few of the non-Reyes guys could entice Mark Shapiro. More likely he wants a Major League starter in return.

I hate the Cards, I hope they don't get Crisp and go 67-95 next season with Carpender and Pujols going on the DL for the whole season.

Ihope you don't mean. I'd rather beat or lose to a team at their full strenth, that includes the Yanks. But I never want to see a fine athlete hurt.

I'm curious as to why you hate them. I went to three Cardinals games this year in Busch stadium, and the fans and the team gave me an amazing experience. Although for one of the games, it was against Pedro and the Mets, so I cheered for Petey. One was against the Pirates, and those were in the nosebleeds, and the other one was against the Cubs. That's like the Sox - Yanks rivalry, except the Cubs aren't any good, there's no violence or massive hatred....actually it's not like the Sox Yanks rivalry. But it was fun.

Again, it's a great organization with a crazy manager, who this year had the MVP in Pujols and CY in Carpenter. So I'm curious why you'd make such a ridiculous statement. No real baseball fan would want to see someone get hurt.

the cardinals are a great organization that has seemed to be cheap the last few years. for them to move into a new stadium in 2006 and then complain about money its pretty ridiculous. there window of opportunity is slowly closing with every passing yr.

Alright I went over the top with Pujols and Carpenter, but I still strongly dislike the Cards, but the main reason is La Russa. I think he's a whiny manager and really don't like him. Sorry about Pujols and Carpenter.

The Guardians are set to acquire Ryan Langerhans from the Braves as the first step of a sequence that could send Coco Crisp to Boston, according to Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal.

Langerhans would be the decent replacement for Crisp that the Guardians need. It'd hard to believe the Red Sox would part Andy Marte for Crisp, but we also don't see what else could motivate the Guardians to deal their left fielder. If they get Marte, it would certainly be worth it. Dec. 23 - 9:43 pm et

from rotoworld

Sean McAdam will have a report in Saturday's Journal that a proposed trade between Atlanta and Cleveland, in which outfielder Ryan Langerhans will move from the Braves to the Guardians, could be the first move in a series of steps that will land Cleveland outfielder Coco Crisp in Boston. The acquisition of Langerhans will give the Guardians the outfielder they need to replace Crisp. There's no word as to who the Sox would trade in exchange for Crisp, but McAdam reports the Guardians were known to have had talks with Atlanta about third-base prospect Andy Marte before Marte was traded to the Red Sox, and it's reasonable to assume they'd ask about him again. Marte's name was raised in a Sox-Guardians trade rumor reported by a suburban Boston newspaper last week.

dont really want to give up marte....Rather deal a pitcher than our current top prospect. Hopefully we can get the deal done with arroyo
