A trade involving OF Jeremy Reed of SEA and P Matt Clement of BOS seems to be in the works. This is a result of Boston's continuing search for a leadoff hitter because of the Johnny Damon situation...

EDIT: The category should be titled more like... "Jeremy Reed to Boston? Damon's future?" Thanks John.

or it could be a move to make damon accept the current offer, or at least not ask for 7 yr 84 mill, which he would never get.. even 13 mill per for damon is a ripoff. especially if it's for 4 years.

I don't know what to think of this. Mostly because I don't have great knowledge of Jeremy Reed although I would gladly welcome his defensive abilities. Sounds like he is already making his case for elite center fielder. It would appear the guy has practically no power but he can still hit and he has potential. If the Sox made this deal I think it would place him as our lead off hitter. Offensively its a downgrade from Damon in the immediate future but probably an upgrade defensively.

The loss of Matt Clement brings up some questions. The Red Sox could be looking for another starter or simply stick wtih Bronson Arroyo in the rotation until Jon Lester is ready to make an impact.

From a money standpoint I would love to see the Mariners take on Clements contract. Considering this offseason we have taken on Mike Lowells contract and have to pay part of Renteria's I would like to reduce some of this money if possible.

I think Reed is a good young player (he was a rookie last year) and I think this would be a good trade...if we can't resign Damon to a reasonable price. I think Damon is the best leadoff hitter in baseball and losing him would be hard. If we do however, I would not mind taking on this promising young future gold glover.

yep, this would be a good trade for us reed is arguably the best defensive center fielder not named torri hunter or vernon wells.

anyone know how good he is at the plate?

By the numbers...

He looks like a lead off man to me. His AA-AAA-MLB stats show the guy has potential as a good OBP player but they also show he has no power. That could change however and to make up for his lack of power he does have good speed.

He didn't show good average last year batting .250+ i believe. He has been compared to Paul O'Neill/Johnny Helmet as in he can hit almost anything thrown at him. He was really hyped up as something special last year, and hopefully he can live up to that expectation. His defense is also above average, though his range is somehwat a factor, but other that he's good.

Didn't the guy hit like .400 in AA or AAA? I tihnk there's definitly potential for a good bat in there. I wouldn't mind this deal if we don't sign Damon.

Yeah, he's definately a welcome replacement for me, and another youthfull player that may flourish here in Fenway. However I don't think Clement will stay with his 5.00+ ERA in the 2nd half, he was great at the begining of last year and held our rotation together, a lot of people have forgotten that. However, if Damon signs somewhere else, and we can't find a suitable replacement, I would welcome Reed with open arms.

The more I hear about Reed the more I like him. I say save $11 million a year (plus whatever Clement is making) and go for this deal. Maybe get a prospect added in there too?

Well scouts have given up on this guy all across baseball I read somewhere, but I haven't. I like him a lot.

Ok, this is what I make of this deal. Lets assume that Manny and Damons future in Boston are intertwined. If one goes, the other stays. This trade could be prefacing a Ramirez trade rather than the sox letting Damon go. I know talks have heated back up for Tejada, I'm a fan of getting Tejada provided we don't give up any of our pitching prospects, I consider pitching to be more valuable than any bat, especially young pitching. Bats come a dime a dozen, but anyways... What if the sox have got that proposed three way deal down to the wire and its coming close, and what if they are preparing to trade for Reed to fill the outfield gap from manny. They could move nixon to left, and put reed in right, since nixon can't seem to stay healthy and the Fenway left field is among the smallest in the league. That would probably help him stay injury free as he wouldn't have to range as much, and Reed is quite rangy, he could handle the job. I'd be a fan of that, provided no pitching prospects leave the Red Sox.

The Mariners have reportedly offered Gil Meche to the Cubs for Corey Patterson.

In combination with a Jeremy Reed-for-Bronson Arroyo deal, it would make a lot of sense for the Mariners. The Cubs, though, hardly seem to have much need for Meche at this point. Dec. 21 - 3:42 am et

Mariners proposed a deal of Gil Meche and Jeremy Reed for either Jonathan Papelbon or Jon Lester.

Dream on! What kind of offer is that? I like Jeremy Reed strickly for his defense. Having a solid defensive team would be the correct direction for the Red Sox but all of that is for nothing if they don't have pitching. Forget this deal!

Horrible, Horrible deal.

I'm pretty sure the M's were kidding. Maybe Jamie Moyer and Gil Meche for Beckett and Lester?

The red sox should counter with an offer of Jonathan Papelbon and Manny Ramirez for Jeremy Reed and Felix Hernandez. THAT I would do.

I think Manny and Papelbon for Ichiro and King Felix. That I would do.

ya I read that to and almost threw up. Rotoworld however sayd there no chance of it happening

Not going to happen. Meche has little trade value at the salary he'll command in arbitration, and while the Red Sox want Reed, they're not going to give either of their elite pitching prospects for him. Bronson Arroyo would be much easier to land. Dec. 29 - 4:20 am et

Seattle has to be on crack bigtime to do that deal. Lester and Paps together aren't as good as King Felix. Felix is 19 years old, and the Mariners wouldn't trade a fan favorite and a sure 300 game winner for a HOF hitter and a pitcher that's pitching 22.3 great innings.

FYI, there are no sure 300 game-winner 19 year olds. None. Ever.

With his stuff and if he stays healthly, he's definately a 300 game winner.

If you have to say, "if", then it isn't sure. Got it? Good.

And, another thing, figuring full potential is reached by all, Felix is better than Papelbon and Lester. But, the duo is more valuable than the King all by himself. Hernandez pitches 1 out of every 5 games, while Paps/Lester go 2 out of every 5.

Trust me, from a burned Yankee fan. You ALWAYS go for the top guy. If we had one of those in 2004...

You had no dominant aces during the 6 trips to the Series from 1996-2003, but you did have several very good pitchers. The Sox had perhaps the two most dominant years ever from a pitcher, Pedro, in 1999 and 2000, yet they won the Series after Pedro came back to earth and had a better supporting cast in the rotation. Two very good pitchers is a better formula for success than one ace.
