Well I refuse to believe that the front office is giving up on Edgar, so maybe they're interested in Lugo to play 2B

yeah Lugo would probably shift to 2nd base, which i have no problem with. I think Sox are going to keep edgar and give him the benefit of the doubt, besides theres still 3 seasons/$30 million left on his contract

Lugo's had some trouble off the field but he's pretty good on it. He's nothing spectacular, but he had 15 homers a couple years ago and stole 39 bases last year with Tampa. A solid player IMO.

 

The Red Sox were supposedly high on Lugo last year before they signed Edgar, so it doesn't surprise me that they're interested. I would expect if a deal happens for Bronson Arroyo to be one of guys going to Tampa.

That sounds like a good deal but I feel that we're going to be a better team with Tony G at 2B

 

Tony G only had 4 errors last year while lugo had 24. I take Tony's glove over Lugo's speed, and pop.

There’s continued talk that the Red Sox are pursuing Tampa shortstop Julio Lugo, even though the Rays may be only lukewarm about Kevin Youkilis, one of the players that the Sox are believed to be offering along with Kelly Shoppach and a minor league pitcher.

Its being reported tonight that the Sox are talking to atlanta and tampa about the three way deal where edgar would go to the Braves, prospect Andy Marte to the d-rays and julio lugo to the Sox.

 

Ok first off why don't the sox trade edgar for Marte straight up? He is one of the best third base prospects in the game?

I also think there are other players involved that we aren't hearing about possibly tampas closer baez who could go to the braves to be there closer? Or Huff going to the Sox? Or some other combination

 

I would like this deal more if the Sox were able to get just Marte or some other tampa players besides Lugo

 

I also wonder if the cubs would get involved to try to get edgar?

 

It was also reported that the Sox were trying to trade for Orlando from the angels. This could possibly be part of a Manny trade? Where manny goes to the Angels for OC, erstad and a prospect or 2?

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal thinks the proposed Edgar Renteria deal could be made into a two-team affair, with the Red Sox getting Andy Marte back from the Braves. Rosenthal says that the Rays rejected a Marte-for-Julio Lugo swap, so the Red Sox would have to work out a Lugo deal on their own by also including a prospect. We're all for just getting Marte, who has more value than either one year of Lugo or three of Edgar Renteria. The Red Sox could then go with Alex Cora at shortstop for a year or sign Alex Gonzalez (FLA) to a short-term deal.

 

MLB.com is also reporting this, Tampa Bay talks with Braves have died down because apparently the Devil Rays got greedy and was asking for couple more Braves prospects in the deal.

I don't like this, it's too soon to give up on Edgar, it's his first season out of the NL, asfter being a Cardinal for awhile, if he suffers through the season then trade him, but for heaven sakes if it's the defense thats botherin them Lugo didn't do that much better (24 errors). Then again, getting Marte might not be such a bad idea, just not yet.

A straight up deal with Atlanta needs to be more than simply Andy Marte. Giving us a veteran 3B and a prospect 3B doesn't do much to help OUR big hole at SS. Its not enough we don't have a true 1st baseman, a clear 2nd basemen, or a center fielder, and with Manny wanting to leave a right fielder. Too many holes and I thought Edgar was a given. This is starting to get messy...I just hope when all 56 of these deals are finished the Red Sox have a complete and solid group.

The Braves are pursuing a trade for Red Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria, offering top third base prospect Andy Marte. The Red Sox then could attempt to move Marte for Devil Rays shortstop Julio Lugo. However, the Rays rejected the same Marte-for-Lugo offer from the Braves, asking for an additional player. They likely would require a second prospect from the Red Sox as well. The Braves and Red Sox met three times on Tuesday. If the Braves acquired Renteria, they likely would move second baseman Marcus Giles into the leadoff spot. The Braves were rebuffed in an effort to land Guardians outfielder Coco Crisp, who could have filled the leadoff role. While I don't like the idea of trading Edgar Renteria, I don't mind the idea of trading for Andy Marte of the Braves. He's one of the best 3rd base prospects around.

 

I seriously doubt the Red Sox would give up Renteria and get only Lugo in return. That's not worth it at all.

 

This could get juicy. Apparently the Red Sox are asking Anaheim about Orlando Cabrera in the Manny deal.... which would leave the team wide open to send Renteria to Atlanta or Chicago.

 

However, if the Red Sox are going to trade Renteria, I'd much rather have Marte than Lugo.

I agree with you there, having a 1st base tandem of Youk and Marte would be great to have. I just dont see Lugo donning a red sox uniform.

Boston Globe: The Sox could cut separate deals with Atlanta and Tampa Bay, sending Renteria to the Braves for Marte, then using Marte as part of a bigger deal with Tampa Bay in which they would not only acquire the shortstop they have targeted, Julio Lugo, but also first baseman Aubrey Huff and/or closer Danys Baez. The Sox have shown interest in Huff in the past and that may be renewed after they failed to acquire Milwaukee first baseman Lyle Overbay. To make a bigger deal, the Sox would probably have to offer a package including Marte, catcher Kelly Shoppach, and pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

lugo an't commin lajoe said they'll go afta a free agen like alex gonsalez or royce clayton and henry likes gonsalez so look for him at ss and if this happens it isnt that big of a loss because loretta is a upgrade lowell is and up grade and gonsalez could infact be an up grade from wat edgar gave us lat year and we get are markey prospect that has power i like the trade and i like the begining of wat we have going

i like clayton as a FA signing, he only made 11 errors in 141 games last year and hit .270

actually i like clayton too, i think hes a good player and wouldnt be too bad of an option. What is his range like though? Not making errors doesn't make your pitching better, but ranging and not making errors does improve the pitching, yes.
