SU vs. 'Nova March 5 a sellout

NCAA record crowd will give McNamara a proper send-off in his final Dome game.

Thursday, February 23, 2006

For the first time in the building's 26-year history, the Carrier Dome is sold out in advance of a Syracuse University men's basketball game.

The Orange's game against No. 2 Villanova on Sunday, March 5, is a sellout, according to senior associate athletic director Pat Campbell.

"We're within about 20 tickets of a sellout and I expect by the end of the day or shortly after people read this story those tickets will be gone," Campbell said Wednesday afternoon. "I'm amazed. It's really an unheard of thing to sell out in advance."

Campbell called the 20 remaining tickets "Star Wars seats." "They are in the farthest reaches of the upper-level," he said.

The game's allure is the final Dome appearance for Syracuse senior Gerry McNamara. McNamara is the school's sixth all-time scorer, the leading 3-point shooter, leading free-throw shooter, No. 2 in steals and No. 5 in assists.

The Dome's capacity has been tested only on a few occasions. The university stops selling tickets when the only seats remaining have less than a 100 percent view of the court.

Campbell said the NCAA record for attendance at an on-campus arena will be broken on

March 5. Syracuse set the record last season when 33,199 fans watched the Orange defeat Notre Dame 60-57.

But even that game didn't sell out in advance.

"Last year, we had tickets for sale on the day of the game," Campbell said. Campbell knows this year's game will break the NCAA record because last year's Notre Dame game was part of ESPN's GameDay, which meant the network's temporary studio set ate into some lower-level seating. Also adding to this year's attendance is the addition of 200 courtside seats.

"It's going to be a bigger number than last year's Notre Dame game," Campbell said. "What that number is I can't tell you exactly until game day."

Campbell explained that the number of fans who watch from the Dome's luxury boxes can alter the final attendance figure.

Syracuse's biggest crowd this season was 31,190 for the game against Louisville last Saturday. It was the 61st game in the Dome's history with a 30,000-plus crowd.

McNamara's farewell game could finally put the record at an unbreakable height.

As a freshman, McNamara started on Syracuse's national-championship team.

Campbell said 64 buses will charter fans from McNamara's hometown of Scranton, Pa., to his farewell game. At approximately 50 people per bus, that's 3,200 fans.

"We've actually set up a new traffic pattern for them so they can drive right off I-81 and park near the Dome," Campbell said. "The last time, they had to park at Manley (Field House) and Skytop. We tried to make it a little more convenient for them. Scranton's been real good to Syracuse University."

Pretty Amazing..

Hofstra gets a big win beating #25 George Mason 77-66 to build there ncaa tournament resume. RPI for hofstra before tonights win over George Mason was 47. George Mason's RPI was 19. hofstra has 9 wins over the RPI top 150. still need to go deep in the CAA tourney to get at-large consideration.

HAhaahahahh your an idiot. Wins over RPI top 150 mean s***, because that basically covers most of the D-1 teams. They have yet to beat a team noteworthy. And they also lost to Notre Dame, a team any good team should beat. Why are you talking up Hofstra? They wont do anything vs. a good team. THey have yet to play one all year. Talk to me when they get some RPI top 50 and 25 wins, vs teams that actually do something.

Your point? Thats still half. That still means that it includes teams in the middle of the pack. George Mason doesnt impress me. Neither does Hofstra. 82nd and 182nd toughest schedules. No s*** they should have a good record with s***** schedules like that.
Posted
why don't they impress you because they come from a conference that doesn't get alot of publicity. george mason will most likely get an at-large bid because of their RPI. oh and a conference such at the Missouri Valley is looking at getting between 3 and 5 teams in the tournament.

Uhhh... since when were we talking about the MVC? I was talking about the Colonial not the MVC. Whatever. Your logic is ridiculous and posts are pretty incoherent. Im done arguing with you.

no my logic is looking at the numbers and not by the name of the team. i would rather have a team like hofstra or george mason in the tournament than an average team from the pac 10 or sec both conferences that down years.

Yeah, the RPI top 150 contains such powerhouses as the St. Peter's, Siena, Farleigh Dickinson, and Illinois-Chicago. Give me wins over RPI Top 50's and I'm convinced. By the way, completely unrelated to whether or not Hofstra should be in the tournament or not... they have some absolutely atrocious uniforms.

Word, Go 'Nova.

Foye, Ray, and Nardi will be lighting it up in Storrs, Baby! [/dicky v. voice]

Suuuure, UConn played awful basketball and still had a chance to tie the game late IN Philly.

Judging by the way Uconn has been playing lately, this is what i am basing my prediction on.

True, true. But they usually get up for the big games.

I want to see UConn win, so memphis takes the 2 spot

Memphis, my goodness NOBODY is talking about them. John Calipari has got his team together this year with Carney (probably my favorite non-Duke college hoops player) and Washington Jr. and co. they gave Duke a scare and are very good. Look for them to go deep in the tourney, and IMO they are one of my four #1 seeds, along with Duke, 'Nova and Uconn.

Yep, that's how I got my #1 seeds looking.

Yeah, it seemed like it went off a little early, but I thought there weren't supposed to be any "do-overs" in CBB.

If that was a clock error ball should have back underneath..not on the sideline.

Refs aren't doing a good job IMO, If you keep an eye on how long GT is in the lane. They should be calling those three seconds calls.

But, I'm surprised JB didn't get T'd up, He NEVER takes the jacket off...

what sweaty coach are you talking about?

I think he's talking about Bruce Pearl from Tennessee. The other day against Florida you could see him sweating profusely through his coat and they talked about it a lot on SportsCenter.
