Couldn't they have gotten Melo as a free agent and just skipped the middle man? Couldn't they have gotten him without giving up a bunch of their top players? Sure, in terms of salary they couldn't afford some of those players and might lose a few anyway, I'd imagine that the Knicks would be better with Carmelo, Stoudemire, and 1-2 players from the package they gave up.

Edit: I'm only asking since that seems to be the point my friend is pissed off about. I'm not arguing one way or the other.

Right, that has been the narrative surrounding this trade, but it just isn't the case.

Carmelo wanted to go to the Knicks, but he also didn't want to risk losing money in free agency because of the uncertainty with the new CBA. Once it became clear that he was willing to sign with NJ if the Knicks couldn't reach an agreement with Denver, the Knicks had no other choice but to top NJ's offer if they wanted Carmelo.

Wow, the Williams trade came out of nowhere. I like it a lot for both teams. The Nets get star power they need heading to Brooklyn, as well as a damn good player who will help them more than Melo would've. Utah's getting Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, and some number of first round picks (I want to say two), which could ending being a nice haul. The Jazz are definitely moving one of their other big men before the deadline. My gut says Millsap is out, Okur and Jefferson don't have much trade value.

THe only thing i dont get about NJ is where do they go from now' date=' how do they build around Williams[/quote']

And that's a very key point. Williams has been upset about the complimentary pieces the Jazz have, and look at what they've got compared to the Nets. If the Nets can't put a lot around D-Will in a year and a half, he's leaving after his contract expires and the Nets will have mortgaged their future for one first round playoff exit (maybe).

Yeah exactally theres not the greatest talent out there in the 2012 FA class

Here's the way I see it. If the Nets fail to trade for Dwight Howard next season, which is unlikely for a few different reasons, I don't see any way D-Will doesn't go to free agency.

The Nets are looking good for future drafts though, owing none of their own first round picks and owning the Lakers first this year and the Warriors and Rockets firsts for 2012 (they are protected, to what extent I don't know). FWIW, I think they have a good stash of second-rounders too. They didn't really mortgage their future, and those picks do give them some more assets to work with. I doubt Prohkorov makes this deal just to sit pretty, after the way he handled the Melo talks.

Who would they trade? Lopez?

Fair point, they didn't mortgage the future entirely. But they gave up their best trading chip, and two of their best draft picks in the coming years. Williams has talked openly about how he wants to play with a superstar big man. Even if the Nets put some nice pieces around Williams (just like the Jazz did), it likely won't be enough for him unless they trade for Howard.

Yeah, it would have to be Lopez and their two first rounders in 2012. I don't think that would get it done, because they might want to try and make a run next year with him and/or they should be receiving comparable offers from Western Conference teams.

I don't like to compare trades involving completely different parties, but the Melo deal is looking a little less good right now. Knicks probably could've had Deron for just Felton, Gallo or Chandler, and Mozgov.

1. Three of those players (unless it's Gallo and Chandler) = / = Favors, Harris, and two first rounders

2. I think Williams is a better fit with the Knicks, but to say that's the trade the Knicks should have made is shortsighted. This was their chance to get the big time scoring threat on the wing. They still have two excellent options at PG slated to hit FA in a year and a half.

^LOL and I want to beat the Celtics so bad. So all the Heat fans can stop talking s*** about my team. The Heat failed to beat the Celtics with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh. If we could do it without Melo I can rub it in their face. I don't think we'll beat them but I hope it we do.

Nate Robinson and Kendrick Perkins to OKC for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic.

Even if Perkins has health issues we don't about, Krstic is trash and Green's a combo forward whose only real use is on running teams where he can play the floor-spacing 4. We don't get a swingman in return and we lose a rock solid defensive center. I'm considering bringing the lolcats out of retirement for this one.

Wasn't Perkins going to be a free agent? I think this is because of Daniel's injury-- they had far more depth when it came to bigs, and I think this means they're considering Big Baby long term. They knew they couldn't win a longer series without more depth to cover Lebron/Kobe/etc.
