I'm not 'above' hating anyone, I simply think it's completely ridiculous that people have this animosity for some f***ing sports figure who's done nothing wrong and has no involvement in any harmful or criminal activities. Same goes for the teams. I believe in let and let live, because I'm reasonable. If you're actually causing harm to the world, there's a problem. If you're not, do your thing, and I won't bat an eye. Apparently the Lakers and Nuggets are talking Melo, with Bynum being the main piece going to Denver. Could be real, could also be a smokescreen for Denver to try and get the Knicks to make an actual serious offer. Bynum by himself is better than Gallinari, Fields and Chandler, and the Nuggets could shed Harrington's contract too by sending him to LA as well for Vujacic's trade exception and maybe someone like Walton.

We could very well have Wade, LeBron, Kobe, Melo, and Gasol all in the same finals, or the latter three with the Celtics big 4 and Shaq (or the Spurs could slide past LA too, you never know). Sports leagues are much better when you have a few absolutely titanic teams who can stand nose to nose and land an equal number of haymakers on each other, and have to really work to beat each other, instead of this ******** where half the league's teams have a real shot to break mediocrity for a season, sneak in, win a title, and go back to sucking the next year without changing the roster much.

If I had to guess, I think its just a rumor that the Nuggets let out hoping to get the Knicks to improve their offer. But if that did happen, the Lakers would be scary with Kobe/Melo/Gasol .

 

Anyway, I'm not sure how the NBA salary cap works, but how would Lakers afford Melo (assuming he signs extension) when they already have some high paid players in Kobe, Gasol, Odom and Artest.

Most teams are over the salary cap, so the total of the incoming and outgoing salaries (for the year the trade is occuring) in the trade have to be within 25% of each other. Bynum's contract is pretty big and within that range of Anthony's, so the trade works (Denver would likely want to unload a bad contract or two while they're at it, which is why I brought up Harrington).

 

LA can sign Melo long term because a player's Bird rights are traded with them wherever they go. Bird rights are what allow a team to re-sign their own players, even if they have to exceed the normal salary cap to do it (but not the 'hard' cap, which is well above the 'normal' cap, don't know the exact number though).

It would make the lakers great but they would loose a big inside presence, the only reason they beat the celtics last year was because they were able to put gasol at the 4 and bynum at the 5 which causes huge mismatch problems with gasol at the 4 who almost always had the height advantage. The celtics though still almost won the game even with not having Perkins and an unhealthy KG. While they may have a great 1-3 in kobe, fisher, anthony, and artest they would loose the inside battle every game.
