would you be interested in a myers for lester trade?

I'd say no for a couple of reasons.

First, Myers is another power righty, and with Beckett and Papelbon, we already have two of those. In fact, here is part of his scouting report, from espn.com.

Everybody agrees that Myers has great stuff, and one scout compares his potential to Josh Beckett of the Marlins.

While I'm not opposed to getting another Beckett caliber pitcher, I do think there are advantages to having a lefty that scouts have compared to Andy Pettitte when you already have two power-righties in the rotation.

Secondly, as 21 year olds in the Eastern League, Lester pitched better than Myers.

Lester: 2.61 ERA, 148.1 IP, 9.89 K/9, 3.46 BB/9, 0.61 HR/9, 1.15 WHIP

Myers: 3.87 ERA, 155.2 IP, 7.52 K/9, 2.49 BB/9, 1.21 HR/9, 1.28 WHIP

I'm not a huge fan of Bobby Abreu. He's disliked in Philly because of his bad attitude and is oftentimes accused of not trying hard enough. ahem, sounds familiar.

I think Manny to the Phillies makes sense, but I'd rather get Pat Burrell in trade. Right handed (more suitable as a replacement for Manny than Abreu), could play the outfield or first base (leaving us more flexible as far as replacements are concerned), and Burrell is younger and cheaper than Abreu.

I posted this in the other Manny thread, I think if the Sox could get Burrell, Brett Myers, and a prospect for Manny they'd be doing pretty well for themselves.

Of course, a deal for both Abreu and Burrell plus prospects I'd also consider, but I'm still weary of Abreu because of his bad reputation for lack of effort.

A blockbuster looking like so: Manny and Clement for Burrell, Myers, Abreu and prospects would also be a possibility IMO.

ok what is it with with some Sox fans now thinking about possibly trading Lester away?

I'm not sure what is going on with them but suddenly it sounds like we're fans of the Yankees. Lets trade away all of our prosepects so we can have 10 all stars!!! WOOOOO!!!!

Thats very interesting.

A lot of people forget about Pat Burrell but I think he is a real good hitter. The one draw back is how streaky he is but then again so is Manny (not to the extent of Burrell though). Now I already mentioned I like Dustin Pedroia but for the hell of it I should mention I really like Chase Utley too.

Chase Utley, Brett Myers, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu.....the Phillies have some players. This is a good team to talk to. They have to be thinking about the damage Manny could do in that park as well.

They might be intrested in a Trot Nixon and Matt Clement for Abreu swap though.

Ramirez unlikely to fit into a Phillies uniform

By Todd Zolecki

Inquirer Staff Writer

Manny Ramirez to the Phillies?

It sure sounds nice, but don't bet on it.

The Phillies have kicked around Ramirez's name for some time - they talked about him before the July 31 trade deadline and have continued to discuss him this fall - but baseball sources indicated yesterday that there seemed to be little chance that they would trade Bobby Abreu for Ramirez.

Here are a few reasons:

Needs. More than anything, the Phillies need pitching help. Any trade involving Abreu almost certainly would require a starter in return.

Money. The Boston Red Sox owe Ramirez $57 million through 2008. Abreu is owed $30.5 million through 2007, which includes a $2 million buyout for a 2008 club option. (Otherwise, Abreu will make $16 million in 2008.) The Phillies are looking for more payroll flexibility, and an Abreu-for-Ramirez trade certainly wouldn't provide it unless the Red Sox paid some of Ramirez's salary.

No-trade rights. Both Ramirez and Abreu have veto power over any trade. The Inquirer reported Nov. 9 that the Phillies had learned that Ramirez would not accept a trade to Philadelphia. He prefers the Los Angeles Angels and possibly the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ramirez's agent, Greg Genske, did not return a phone call yesterday to gauge whether Ramirez's willingness to play in Philadelphia had changed.

Sources said the Red Sox have been the aggressors in talks with the Phillies and could be trying to drum up the market for Ramirez, who wants out of Boston. The Sox are big fans of Abreu, and it's thought the Phillies would be a match for Ramirez because he has a relationship with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who worked with Ramirez in Cleveland.

Make no mistake, Manuel would love Ramirez in the middle of his lineup.

But while an Abreu-for-Ramirez trade doesn't seem to be a fit, it doesn't mean the Phillies and Red Sox won't get together next week during the winter meetings in Dallas. Abreu could land in Boston yet. One trade that might make more sense would involve Red Sox rightfielder Trot Nixon and a pitcher, possibly righthander Matt Clement. The Sox would be willing to move Nixon, and they have a surplus of pitching.

The Yankees have been interested in Phillies outfielder Jason Michaels, but a source said they have not offered the Phils anything enticing.

Fasano in, Pratt out. The Phillies have signed catcher Sal Fasano to be Mike Lieberthal's backup, which ends Todd Pratt's tenure with the team. Fasano agreed to a one-year, $425,000 contract with performance bonuses.

"We just felt he would be a good fit for us," said Ruben Amaro Jr., the Phillies' assistant general manager. "While he's caught a lot and been around a long time, he doesn't have a lot of wear and tear on him. He can probably catch more than once a week, and we wanted that ability as Mike gets a little bit older. [Lieberthal is 33.] It gives us a little bit more coverage in that area."

Fasano, 34, is a career .222 hitter, but he hit .250 with 11 home runs and 20 RBIs in 160 at-bats last season for Baltimore.

I wouldn't trade Trot Nixon and Matt Clement for Bobby Abreu. Nixon has a fantastic attitude and has been here since the beginning of his career. He is one of the leaders and helps hold this team together. Bobby Abreu can't bring that to the Red Sox and although I'm not 100% happy with Clement...right now he may be our #5 starter which is incredible.

I would do Clement and Nixon for Abreu in a heart beat. Nixon is fat and is a lock for the DL once a year, Clement is wild and is a head case and I do hope he gets traded this offseason. I wouldn't mind having clement back in our rotation because he will be our 4 or 5 and I think thats a role that he is great for but I wouldn't mind seeing him go at all.

The thing with this deal is that the phillies will not do it. They're looking for a Barry Zito or a Vazquez and Clement is not that. They're looking for their rotation to "dramatically change" as a result of dealing Abreu. If the money were even, Beckett and Mota for Abreu would be the exact kinda deal they'd be looking for. Nixon and Clement are no Beckett and Mota. Those are two players who can dramatically change a staff. Clement is no dramatic anything unless you're talking about a dramatic replay of him getting knocked in the coconut by a Carl Crawford line drive.

the only way an abreu trade with the sox will happen is if there is a third team involved. they are looking at trades for vasquez, bedard, zito, marquis, jason shmidt and chin ming wang.

Phillies eye No.1 starter

By RANDY MILLER

phillyBurbs.com

Seeing Billy Wagner land a four-year, $43 million deal with the New York Mets earlier this week was a wakeup call for the Phillies, who immediately went into panic mood and made a quick decision to overpay for a replacement closer. And so, Tom Gordon agreed to a three-year, $18 million contract with a $4.5 million club option late Thursday night.

That accomplished, the Phillies' next agenda will be to find for that elusive top-of-the-rotation starter during next week's winter meetings in Dallas.

The Phillies, who aren't in the chase for top free-agent starters Matt Morris and Matt Clement, may attempt to pry one in a trade and possibilities include dealing for Oakland left-hander Barry Zito or Arizona right-hander Javier Vasquez, both former All-Stars.

"It's 50-50 right now what would happen, but probably the trade route would be the safer route," general manager Pat Gillick said Friday.

To pry Zito, the Phillies probably would have to part with left fielder Pat Burrell because the A's long for a right-handed-hitting slugger.

Besides Burrell, right fielder Bobby Abreu's name keeps coming up as a trump card to land a top starter.

"I really don't like to comment on rumors," Gillick said. "All it does is upset our personnel. A lot of clubs view [our players] as very appealing. We'll see if something makes sense for us. A lot of these conversations with other teams are exploratory. They're just kicking the tires."

After giving up on Wagner because they didn't want to offer a four-year deal to a 34-year-old, the Phillies reluctantly went to three years and an option for Gordon, 38.

"The market so dictated that you had to go a little further than you wanted to go," Gillick said. "Right or wrong, we had some info that where we were on Billy for three years was where we should be."

Because the Phillies didn't get their new closer cheap, they appear to have given up on the idea of dealing for Tampa Bay All-Star closer Danys Baez and using Gordon as a setup reliever.

Among the topics:

Free agents. There has already been a flurry of signings that have taken big-name talents such as Paul Konerko (White Sox), Billy Wagner(Mets), B.J. Ryan (Blue Jays) and Brian Giles (Padres) off the market.

However, a number of top prizes remain available, led by righthander A.J. Burnett, widely considered the top starting pitcher on the market, despite a 49-50 career record. Burnett probably won't last much longer. He has already received a five-year offer from the revved-up Blue Jays, and the Cardinals have come in with a four-year offer. Both offers are in the neighborhood of $10 million per year.

Two premier leadoff men, shortstop Rafael Furcal and centerfielder Johnny Damon, remain free. The Cubs have hotly pursued Furcal, and the Dodgers have recently gotten into the mix. Also, it's not out of the question that Furcal would return to the Braves. The Red Sox would like to have Damon back, but they won't meet agent Scott Boras' request for a seven-year contract. Neither will the Yankees, who would like to get Damon on a three-year deal.

Top remaining free agents include starting pitchers Kevin Millwood, Paul Byrd, Matt Morris, Brett Tomko, Jarrod Washburn and Jeff Weaver; relievers Todd Jones and Trevor Hoffman; infielders Nomar Garciaparra, Kevin Millar and Bill Mueller; catchers Mike Piazza, Ramon Hernandez and Bengie Molina; and outfielders Jacque Jones, Kenny Lofton and Sammy Sosa.

Trades. Some big names could be available in trades, but none bigger than Ramirez, the mercurial slugger who has put his ritzy Boston condo up for sale and told Red Sox management that he won't be showing up for spring training.

The Sox are willing to oblige Ramirez's trade request, but dealing him won't be easy. First of all, there isn't a huge market for him. That's why the Sox are approaching teams like the Phillies, trying to drum up interest.

The Sox want value for Ramirez, and they really don't want to eat a ton of the $57 million that remains on his contract.

Ramirez has veto power over any trade. He wants to go to Anaheim, where he thinks he'll be happier playing for the Angels. The Angels need offense and have some interest in Ramirez, but they're not tripping over themselves to get him. Mets general manager Omar Minaya, a junkie for big-name talent, still seems poised to make a run at Ramirez.

"You'll see Manny's name everywhere next week," an American League executive said. "Boston is trying to get two or three teams interested. There are a lot of roadblocks in pulling off a deal like this, but they're trying."

Arizona righthander Javier Vazquez is likely to be dealt to an East Coast team this week. It won't be to the Phillies (they're on his no-trade list) but it might be to the hyperactive Mets, who could open a spot in their rotation by dealing Kris Benson.

Others that could be traded include Phillies rightfielder Bobby Abreu; Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano; Milwaukee first baseman Lyle Overbay; Arizona third baseman Troy Glaus; Florida catcher Paul Lo Duca and centerfielder Juan Pierre; Boston pitcher Matt Clement and rightfielder Trot Nixon; and Oakland pitcher Barry Zito.

The local nine

The Phillies say they are not shopping Abreu. They don't have to. Every team in baseball already knows that he could be had for pitching help.

It's not that the Phils don't like Abreu. They do. He's available because he could fetch some value as the Phils look to fortify their pitching staff.

The Red Sox covet Abreu and could have some pitching that would interest the Phils. Boston has already floated Clement's name the Phillies' way. A combination of Clement and rightfielder Nixon could interest the Phils.

Another pitcher that could be available and of interest to the Phils is St. Louis righthander Jason Marquis, though that would not be nearly enough return on Abreu.

Several baseball officials have confirmed that the Phils have floated a slew of trade proposals in their quest for pitching, both starting and relief. Something could come to a head in Dallas.

The annual Rule 5 draft will be held before the meetings end on Thursday.

New Phils general manager Pat Gillick loves the Rule 5 draft. He used it well in Toronto, snaring outfielder George Bell and third baseman Kelly Gruber.

The Phils have two open spots on their 40-man roster, so they have room to be active in the draft, and it's likely they will be.

If we needed to we could also throw in Youkilis since Burrell would play 1st

1) damon

2) renteria

3) ortiz

4) abreu

5) burrell

6) lowell

7) varitek

8) youkilis

9) pedroia/cora

that is a very solid lineup 1-9, if Pedroia can hit in the Majors. It is also a very good defensive team, Abreu udgrades over Manny (defensively), Lowell over Mueller, Youkilis over Millar, Pedroia/Cora equal to Graffy.

abreu batting 3? no no no, it would be abreu, ortiz, burrell

Abreu hitting 3rd might actually be a good idea, only because he gets on base a lot, letting papi hit him in, and Burrell as protection, however, IMO, Ortiz is a better hitter, who has adjusted to whatever AL managers/pitchers have thrown at him.

"The Philadelphia Daily News says the Phillies asked for Mark Prior when discussing Bobby Abreu with the Cubs yesterday and weren't dismissed outright. They probably will be. Abreu is great, but the Cubs won't be dealing Prior, and even if they were open to the possibility, they wouldn't do it for an outfielder making more than $15 million per year. "

Doesn't seem very likely
