Murphy also started out slow last year before becoming very hot in the second half. It looks like his surge has started earlier this year, which is an encouraging sign.

Send Harris down and call him up until Kaplar can do his thing

not a smart move.....murphy should be playing everyday to further his development not sit on the bench in boston.

think him and WM Pena will be the next Nixon kaplar combo?

too early to tell but murphy needs to continue his development in Pawtucket not Boston...If he has a great second half in Pawtucket you could see him called up when the 40 man rosters expand Sept. 1st

Murphy continues to rake in Pawtucket going 3/5 last night with 3 doubles as his season average in pawtucket is now .314

Do you believe he's just making himself to be more of an enticing trade chip? We would just need him here to be a backup, but some team out there would give him more of a shot to be an everyday player :dunno:

If the Sox could use him to get a player to help him this year I don't think he becomes a fixture in the sox outfield anytime soon. Not enough power for a corner outfielder and he really doesn't have the range to play center either.

2/3 with a double and a HR tonight. Slugging .533 in 180 AAA at bats so far this year at the age of 24. I'm not sure its fair to say he doesn't have enough power to be a corner outfielder.

SLG% is hardly an accurate way to judge power. Freddy Sanchez has a .529 SLG% and he admittedly has little power.

No, SLG alone won't get the job done, but IsoP works pretty good. Anything greater than .200 from someone under 25 is actually pretty good.

Nowhere does it say you need big power to play corner outfield....go through the depth charts in major league baseball and you will see there are a lot of players who don't have a ton of power.....but are still good players.

While slugging % may not be the absolute stat to judge power its certainly an indicator for it. FWIW Freddy Sanchez is on pace for 72 extra base hits this year, but part of that slugging percentage is obviously his very high batting average this year.

An of course you don't need big power to be a corner outfielder. However, if you don't have power you better be very good at something else. For example, Ichiro makes up for it by being the best hitter for average in the league, along with great speed and defense.

Whats more important than all of this, at least for this thread, is that it seems David Murphy seems to have re-established himself as a legit prospect this year since his promotion to AAA. A .913 OPS in 180 AAA at bats is impressive. I would not like to see him thrown in as filler to aquire a minor improvement at the deadline.

what is there to be excited about for this guy?

We're looking at a guy who has put up an .802 OPS in the minors this year and has shown very little power potential, right? He's supposed to be good defensively, but la de freaking da. I'm excited about a number of sox prospects, but this guy ain't really one of them. Someone prove me wrong... please

I won't prove you wrong but I would rather see him everyday for the rest of the season than Gabe Kapler so we can assess what he can do.

We already know that kapler can't do much of anything. If Murphy can hold his own over the next few weeks, at the very least he would enhance his trade value.

He's had some pretty sustained hot streaks. He also started off very cold this year and last. Some want to blame the cold weather in portland maine, which could be a factor. I got excited about him when he was on one of his hot streaks when he got called up to AAA but he has since cooled off. His overall numbers aren't great but hes still pretty young, as he turns 25 in October. He definately hasn't proven he can be a regular at the major league level but he hasn't proven he can't either.

He's more of a 4th outfielder as he will never project to hit for much power for a corner outfielder.

While you are probably right, i think theres a chance he still develops. He does have 57 xbh in 126 games between AA and AAA this year.

They do owe it to the current players to try to win this weekend and the series beginning Monday against the White Sox. As strange as it seems, this debilitated team full of retreads just beat the likely Cy Young winner, Halladay and long time nemesis Lilly in back to back games which has me completely baffled. Early in the season, when the Sox were healthy, the Jays were tuning them up. This game is so unpredictable. If I was a betting man, I would have lost a load of money the last two days on the Jays. This game is so unpredictable. In 2004 ALCS after game 3 things were worse. You can argue that we had a very talented team in "04 and these guys stink, and that is true, but there was no margin for error in "04. They had to beat a talented Yankee team 4 straight and they did. If this tattered group can somehow find a way to win over the next 5 days with patchwork pitching, they could be somewhat revived. Varitek and Nixon are coming back on Monday. Wakefield will be back. I think it is a 100 to 1 shot, but this game is just so unpredictable. The other thing is we don't know what kind of effect Lester's cancer will have on this group. It could be something that focuses this group and galvanizes them. You never know. I stuck a fork in them long before most people, but while I am not optimistic I am still curious.

The Marlins are looking at David Murphy and the Guardians' Franklin Gutierrez as they continue their search for a center fielder.

B.J. Upton and Elijah Dukes would be better options, but the Marlins haven't been able to get anything done with the Rays. There was some speculation last year about Murphy for Taylor Tankersley, but there's little chance that the Marlins would give up the left-hander now. Ricky Nolasco, who was offered up for Upton, is more expendable, but he's still worth a little more than either Murphy or Gutierrez. Perhaps Yusmeiro Petit is a possibility.

That wouldve been a great deal if the Sox were able to add Tankersley last year for Murphy. As it currently stands, we have good outfield depth to afford the loss. Give Murphy his playing time and receive a decent pitcher in return

Posted
if you could get Petit, then more power to you. Petit is the kinda guy who could easily project as an innings eating back end of the rotation guy so long as he gets a little more seasoned. He was rushed last yr with the Marlins, the sox could afford to leave him in AAA for the yr and replace Wake next season with a young contact pitcher. If it is offered, you do it.

Marlins fishing

The Red Sox and Marlins haven't had discussions on center fielder David Murphy for some time. He was a hot topic for a while, and talks could be rekindled. Murphy is drawing interest because teams feel he'll be a late bloomer and have a very good major league career. A former No. 1 pick, Murphy has gained 10-15 pounds of muscle this offseason but still finds himself as the fifth or sixth outfielder (counting Eric Hinske and Peña). The Marlins would likely give up righthanders Ricky Nolasco or Yusmeiro Petit, but not young lefty Taylor Tankersley, whom the Sox covet.

Today's update by Nick Carfado. Sox, strike this deal while the iron is hot. If you can get Nolasco or Petit for David Murphy... jump all over it

Posted

I want to see a little of Murphy, before we trade him. If in fact, he's really gained all muscle this offseason, he could be a 20 HR power threat.

I'd take Nolasco, but Petit doesn't look all that exceptional.
