Washburn is too shaky for me to sign, same with Morris, I still have faith in Clement. keep in mind thats only a one year staff, then sign Zito who goes to the Berklee school of music.

Bench:

1b Mark LeCroy/Travis Lee

C Doug Mirrabelli

Utl Alex Cora

Of Gabe Kapler

Of Todd Hollandsworth

thats all well and good, though gabe kapler's injury (ruptured achilles tendon) will keep him out for as long as a year or even more. I read in the Globe recently that Adam Stern will rejoin the team this spring as the 4th oufielder

You guys really ought to keep Damon. The offense will take a bigger hit than you think if he's gone.

I don't think anyone wants damon to go. I think that if he's asking for 60 million dollars over 5 years he's not going to be able to get it. If other teams offer him what he wants then its likely that he'll go there. Its sad but its the way baseball works. If the sox want to be able to compete with the Yanks they'll need to spend wisely, which means NOT spending too much money whenever possible.

Amazingly the pitching we need may already be on our team. As horrible as it was this season you have to think more of the answers are already here. More than anything the Sox need a shut down lefty in the bullpen. BJ Ryan should be there top target which I know they will fight with the Yanks for. I believe Mike Timlin is the biggest resign. If we have those two guys thats a great 1-2 punch and if Foulke can retake the closer role....we might have the best bullpen in the league. Not to mention Hansen, Delcarmen, and DiNardo will continue to progress. I would also like to keep Bradford and Myers for those situational outs.

As far as the rotation goes. With all the guys we have signed I think we are guaranteed to see a better season from Curt Schilling and Wade Miller. The anticipation for Jonathan Papelbon is huge and he should be a tank this year. Boomer and Wake would be perfect at the end of the rotation but unfortunatly we have to deal with Clement who I think we all agree he will probably never live up to his potential now at age 30. Arroyo deffinitly seems like the odd man out and as much as I like him he doesnt have enough pitches or velocity to do much more than he has. Lets not forget that Jon Lester could be up there with Papelbon next season who would give us that much needed lefty. We also have Anibal Sanchez who might not be too far away....so investing in ANOTHER starting pitcher is not the way to go unless its a stud.

Exactly why I wouldn't be thrilled to sign any pitching besides B.J. Ryan

Starting help:

Papelbon

Lester

Sanchez

Alvarez

Bullpen help:

Hansen

Delcarmen

DiNardo

That is 7/11 right there. Who knows, Clement could stay aboard and act as veteran, Arroyo maybe, Wakefield may be 50 by then and still winning 15 games. The we also have offensive help coming

C Kelly Shoppach?

1B Ian Bladgerdon?

2B/SS Dustin Pedroia

SS/3B Hanley Ramirez

3B Kevin Youkilis

OF Jacoby Ellisbury

OF Brandon Moss

OF David Murphy

OF Luis Soto

Thats a whole team of solid spects right there, and we have about 2/4 possible all stars in there, maybe more, maybe less. If anything we should only get temporary help with the begining of this farm help comin in.

I see the likes of Abe Alvarez and Kelly Shoppach being trade bait this offseason

The Rockies still want another catcher after acquiring Miguel Ojeda yesterday and are believed to have Kelly Shoppach and Josh Bard at the top of their list. It seems the Rockies aren't so upset with what happened during the Larry Bigbie deal that they'd be unwilling to deal with Boston again. The Rockies don't need Bard, who is barely distinguishable from Danny Ardoin and Ojeda. Shoppach would be of more use. He's a quality defender capable of hitting 25 homers as a Coors Field player, although he still might not be a particularly good hitter while doing so.

maybe a 3-team trade deal could take place with Red Sox, Rockies, and an undisclosed team like the D-Rays to acquire Aubrey Huff, or even Milwaukee Brewers to acquire Lyle Overbay

First off, I hate Soriano and i will be a Nats fan if they trade for him, especially if they traded Lester, Papelbon, Hansen, Delcarmen, Pedroia or Hanley for him. Which they would have to. Forget it. Pedroia is the future.

However, I would do a Arroyo and Abe Alvarez for Huff for sure. I would do clement for huff.

I love huff, I love his versatility, LF RF 1b 3b, and i love his bat. He is the man. I think the sox should trade for him, or sign overbay when milwaukee doesnt offer him arbitration. Overbay would be an excellent option, hes a doubles hitter and fenway is a doubles park.

This is a stretch, but they could sign both if they traded nixon, which is a remote possiblity, but i dont know what the odds of that are. Trot for X Stop Gap second basemen and prospect? Enter Overbay and Huff? Who knows.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't on the s*** list with the Rockies, after the last 3-way that went sour ?

its not like the Rockies are the elite of the National League and have a team of all-star players at their disposal (exception being Todd Helton). Im very sure theyd let bygones be bygones to be able to add on Kelly Shoppach.

washburn is shaky? he's a lefty that had a 3.20 ERA this year and has postseason experince with him...and morris?he had 14 wins this year and a 4.10 ERA and he has postseason experince too...shaky? i most definately disagree

I've tried but I could not have put it better myself. Schill and Miller have to be better. Clement will probably do about as well as he did this year, so we shouldn't rely on him any more than we would ever rely on Arroyo.

If we lose Manny then our offense is likely to not be quite what it has been the past few years. If we keep Manny we'll probably get a boost, as I imagine that Huff will be playing at first next year. That's like getting a more consistent, left handed Millar (he is basically the equivalent of a very good Millar season).

If Theo is smart and patient, we can have a good shot of making the playoffs next year (which means that if we hit our stride right, we can win the WS) and be in very good shape the following year and thereafter.

I doubt we'd be able to get Overbay, but I like him more than Huff.

I think we have a much better shot at getting Overbay instead of Huff. The Brewers aren't in our division and they have Fielder who is going to play first so they should move him while they can. Its not like the Brewers don't have places on there team to improve. Not to mention its tough to deal within your own division with Tampa Bay who always asks for teams top prospects. Although with the changes Tampa Bay made it might be easier to deal with them.

The idea of trading Nixon and having both Overbay and Huff sounds interesting. That would require a couple trades though and that might be tough although I'm sure the Red Sox could pull something off. I'm still a big Trot Nixon fan though and he is just one of those Red Sox I feel is important to have around. Adding two new faces and both guys who I wouldn't consider superior to Nixon might not be the best idea. Its interesting though. Without a doubt it appears our biggest issue on offense is a #5 hitter to protect Manny and that player will come in the form of either OF or 1B. Both players who take up those roles I would hope to be strong defenders and one of them being a 30 HR guy.

why are you people so concerned with overbay and huff...come on i know they're good players but i would go for chad tracy of the Diamondbacks...give up clement and arroyo/abe for him...he's making 335K a year, hit 27 homers along with a .308 BA..he clearly is the best choice here

I could ask you the same about soriano.

But, the D-Backs won't trade him....end of story.

like yankeessuck said, its funny you talk like this, every post you have done is all about soriano.

Tracy will 100% likely sign back with the Diamondbacks as they plan on him playing the outfield. Milwaukee and Tampa Bay are more viable candidates to pull a trade deal. Another plus of having Huff, he is a .304 hitter against the Yankees and bats .308 at Yankee Stadium.

Not so fast, living in Arizona as I do, I know that the D'Backs are having a pile up of outfielders. Rookie Carlos Quinten (AAA) is prime to play next year and is highly regarded. Also, Conor Jackson who played first base this year is a natural outfielder. So Tracy is kinda the odd man out. With Green locked in and Gonzalez locked in (fan wise, if he gets traded, the fanbase thats left will be very angry, trust me) and Quinten and Jackson being such promising talent, Tracy seems viable to be traded. Now having said that, NO word of trading him has come up. We would PROBABLY have to give up a pretty prospect or something to get him. He's establishing himself to be a very good Major League hitter.

And Jackson who played first for the Diamondbacks this year, is sorta in a weird spot too. Tony Clark, who played like David Ortiz at times, was signed to a two year extension late in the season. And with Clark the way he was last year, most of the time wil go to him. This guy is loved by the Diamondbacks Front Office, yet he sorta stumbled around and didn't do alot when he was in the big leagues. IMO the right hitting coach would help him shine and become a great Major League hitter. He was in the MLB futures game, so again we would have to package a nice deal to be able to get him. I personally wouldn't mind the Red Sox getting him, thats what I said to myself when I first saw him. And hes got a nice glove at first as well.

Oct 6 Tracy closed the 2005 season with an active 14-game hitting streak in which he batted .448 (26-for-58) for the Arizona Diamondbacks. During his final 14 contests, the second-year player stroked seven doubles, a triple and five home runs, good for 13 runs scored and 16 RBI. He batted .378 and slugged .704 during the month of September to finish the year on a high note.

Advice: Tracy moved to the outfield during the second half of 2005, which kept his bat in the lineup while freeing up room for others in the Arizona infield. He could land in the outfield in 2006 with the likely possibly of Arizona trading veteran Luis Gonzalez, who has one year remaining on a big contract. Tracy finished the 2005 campaign with a .308 average, 34 doubles, 27 homers and 72 RBI in 145 games. He entered the year with questions surrounding his lack of power, but he slugged .553 in 2005.

Just like the Dbacks wouldn't trade schilling.

Riverside Sluggers, I understand that aspect but hes SUCH a fan favorite, regardless of his contract, I would be very suprised if he was moved. But if they want to go young AGAIN, I could see him being moved. But a Gonzalez trade would be a big shcoker here, even with the media coverage about it.
