Papelbon's starts

7/31 vs MIN: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB 7 K

8/16 vs DET: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K

8/21 vs ANA: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

No, that's not Sandy Koufax, but a 2.11 ERA is light years better than our next best starter. I can't understand why you'd want him in a relief role.

Arroyo isnt under contract for 2006. The Red Sox have a club option on him for 2006, which they could decline

I'd be shocked if they don't pick up the option, because then he walks for nothing, and I have a feeling he is part of a future trade.

Papelbon wouldve gone longer in his starts, just at that time they had him on an innings/pitch count limit. How can people not be sold on him being a starter? In his 3 starts, has allowed 4 ER in 17 innings, I do hope to see him as a starter come spring, 2006

that is true, afterall sox were tring to do that deal with the marlins before to get AJ Burnett and bronson arroyo was part of that package

speaking of AJ I'm really pulling for him to sign with the sox, and for people who said it could be another Pavano incident, Burnett is no finesse pitcher like Pavano, he should/will have an easier time in the AL.

I think the whole incident that he had at the end of the season with the marlins may help us get him signed because JH has some close ties with AJ.

I"m all FOR Papelbon starting, if that's what's best for this team. If we are under the contracts of Wells, Arroyo, Clement, Schilling and Wakefield I'm not sure who is best suited to either not be on the staff or be in the pen. We know Papelbon is a good reliever. He is probably a very good starter. We know we need both. I'm sold on Papelbon in all of his wonderful forms, but I think that we'll get another starter for next year during the offseason and be confronted with having 7 good starters. That's all.

Here is what the Sox need...IMO

They need to get younger at several positions. Papelbon, Hansen, Delcarmen help the pitching staff get younger (as well as increasing the staff's ability to strike batters out, a key flaw this year, especially in the bullpen.) As for the offense, I see us going younger at 3b where Youkilis will get the starting nod over Mueller who won't be back. I also see us getting younger at 2b with Pedroia coming up at some point in 06. Possibly, 1b is a spot where we could get younger as well. Maybe a Ryan Shealy for Kelly Shoppach deal could be reopened? This team got old fast. Whether it was the 30 games in 30 days or something else, our team looked really old in September and definitely in October. 6 - 9 in the batting order had no production in the LDS, especially with runners in scoring position.

Finally, we need to overhaul the bullpen. Delcarmen and Hansen help. Hopefully Foulke can make a comeback, physically and mentally. Resign Timlin for 2.8 - 3.0 million for one year. That gives us a decent 7, 8 and 9th inning. If we sign Ryan, we have to understand that without cutting salary somewhere else, we wont get AJ Burnett. DiNardo will be the long man and Myers will be the LOOGY. That's not too bad.
