The most tuned in Red Sox fans have been saying this all year long and today that nightmare came through in a most glaring form. With a man on first Tino Martinez hits a ball that should have been caught for a double play. However, Francona being his typical brain dead self has committed himself to playing Millar no matter how utterly putrid he is. Millar misplays the ball and BANG!! 2nd and 3rd nobody out.

If Olerud had started he easily makes the catch and doubles the Yankees up. It should have been a 3-2 score with bases empty and nobody out. This entirely changes the whole complexion of the game. Not only are the Red Sox losing a fantastic glove in Olerud, they are also losing a great former batting champion at the plate.

Francona's blind loyatly to Millar is enough to make you want to kick your tv in! The Red Sox should have wrapped this division up 2 weeks ago. Thanks to Francona's brain farts however, the Sox will once again be playing on the road throughout the playoffs. Home field advantage is huge in the playoffs but that doesn't seem to matter to Francona. what matters to him is that Millar is happy and Schilling is the center of attention.

Wakefield pitching on three days rest was done solely not for the benefit of the team but for Schillings ENOURMOUS ego. Wakefield should have been the starter for tommorrow and would have had his usual four days rest. This team desperately needs a manager who is more like Bellicheck. Bellicheck does things not to be buddy buddy with the players, but he does what's best for the team..... TAKE A NOTE FRANCONA!

Hey Cityofchampions33...

I know that but this situation has turned out so BADLY that 2 threads won't do any harm!

That Pinhead Francona...plays Millar instead of Olerud in the most important games of the season!

Serves that PECKERHEAD right but now we all suffer. :dunno:

do you really think Olerud would have caught that rocket off Tino's bat? No f***ing way will I accept someone bashing Millar for that, it's f***ing human reaction time, I'm amazed Millar actually got a glove on that

and please explain to me how Wakefield starting today was as a result of Schilling's ego...

I agree, but I like how you say 'former batting champion' when he won it over a decade ago.

Yes I do ...his arm is at least a foot longer and it would been right in his glove.

Also, please note that I have not bashed Millar myself but stated that in my opinion...Olerud is a much better and experienced player that could have helped them win the division if he had been played constantly.

I don't have the ability or knowledge to produce wonderful stats like some of the members here but what I would like to see if anyone knows how...is what would Oleruds stats be if we only counted the games that he started in and for those full games only and how many full games may that have been???

I have to say, I really don't feel too down about this. I don't know if winning it all last year has mellowed me. The situation is what it is, and the most important thing is getting into the playoffs. The Sox have three games to get in, and they lost the first. I really believe they'll win Sunday, but if not, they've got Monday to nail it down.

All I have to say is that pitching wins in October and Wake, though I love the lug, gave up 7 runs. Keep on bashing Millar all you want, but he had nothing to do with either today's loss or this year's second place finish.

Had Schilling...

Had Clement...

Had Foulke...

Had Embree...

Had any of them been healthy and pitched to potential, like they did in 2004, Millar would not even be talked about. Like Tek not being talked about for his OBP or BA in September.

Bashing players is gay and I'm proud of what the Sox did (and are doing). Seriously, people who bash a part-time 1b, Lf, Rf for all the team's pitching woes has absolutely no clue about what the game is about. No clue at all.

whta I dont like all most as much as losing is all this judging of who a fan is, and who isnt. That if you crticize the team and certain players you arent a real fan, and if you get pissed off and use words of a particular kind..you arent a "real" fan. I certainly dont feel I have a right to question any one about their loyalty to the sox, and certainly think everyone has a right to say what they want about anyone and still be a sox fan. with that said, I can see the spin doctors are out in full force. All of sudden we're lucky to still be alive, this from, a group of people who have blabbering about how bad the yankees are and who have been monitoring our magic number for over a month...now it's like well we'relucky to still be in it. This certainly isnt as devsating as 78 and isnt really a choke, but we played mediocre ball at best when it really counted and the yankees played brilliantly all month.

we can still make it today--so before the post mortems and finger pointing begins we need to step up and play our asses today..we all know getting to the dance is the the thing. so before I unload, on francona and millar, and schilling and who knows who-and whoever else I end up thinking hurt us at the given moment.. I am cheering my ass off today!

2003 Florida

2002 Anaheim

2001 Arizona

Not to be completely off topic...but maybe second place isn't that bad. The World Series hasn't exactly been unkind to second place finishers.

Could Olerud have caught that ball? Maybe. It never really helps to be a Monday morning quarterback. Except in the case of Grady. That's different.

How would you like to be Cleveland ?

Or Oakland, or Texas, or Seattle, or Minnesota, or Detriot, or Kansas City, or Baltimore, or Toronto............

The point it we have had a very good season no matter how you look at it. Should Olerud be starting more then Millar, probably, but it doesn't mean we could have won the last game, or any of the other games for that matter. The Red Sox are still probably going to make the playoffs, and it doesn't matter how you get in, just so long as you are in.

Millar is a good ball player, he has value. I do like him on the sox, do I like him starting more frequently then olerud? No. Do I think he lost us this game? No. Even if olerud does turn that double play, don't trick yourself into thinking that that would win us the game. Wake still gave up more bombs then the sox could recover from, and the bats just never really exploded. We're still in it, 3 out of 4 scenarios right now have the sox winning the wild card. I think we'll see something nice from schilling tonight, and give us some good karma going into the series against chicago. If we win, we're in, if we lose and clevland loses, we're in, if we lose and they win, we play tomorrow.

Everyone calm yo' self. I'm already looking forward to next season anyways, a full season of craig hansen manny delcarmen and jon papelbon the starter, probably jon lester and pedroia in there somewhere too, its going to be a good time.

You don't bring Mueller back. Youk is so ready for the big leagues, and Mueller has also grounded into an un-wanted amount of DP's this year. (22 I believe.) While his defense will be missed, I have no problem thinking that Youk will fill his role nicely.
