Orioles ready to take on Yankees

Baltimore (70-78) at New York (85-63), 7:05 p.m. ET

Coming off a frustrating 6-5 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, Baltimore begins an 11-game stretch against New York and Boston, two teams competing for the American League East title. The Orioles open a four-game series in the Bronx on Monday. Left-hander Erik Bedard will try to earn just his second win in 13 starts since coming off the disabled list. Bedard is 1-6 with a 5.40 ERA since recovering from a left knee sprain, and he has not been the same pitcher who emerged as the ace of the rotation with five wins in his first six decisions. Bedard allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings with two walks against the Rangers on Wednesday, earning a no-decision.

In a year when the Yankees have been besieged by injuries to their rotation, Chien-Ming Wang was a bright spot before spending two months on the DL with a sore shoulder. He made one start against the Orioles this season, allowing three runs over seven innings on June 28 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are a respectable 6-4 against the Bombers this season, but most of those games occurred when the O's were in first place in the AL East. The Orioles haven't won a season series against the Yankees since 1997, and they haven't won a season series at Yankee Stadium in 10 years.

I'll say this about Wang. He throws THE heaviest sinker in the majors outside of Bradon Webb of the D-Backs. He has allowed threw 7 innings only 1 fly ball out. His sinker is SO heavy that tonight he has 8 assists. If you put a good infield behind him, he will be a very good pitcher.

I dont know about you guys(Yankee fans) but I'm REALLY excited about Wang. He looked like he was back to the pitcher he was prior to the injury. 95 MPH sinker.....nothing but GB. After the 1st inning the O's could do nothing with him. 9 assists for Wang also...that just tells you how heavy that sinker is.

Thats right, Wang is getting back to how he was

But then main story to me here is Bubba, probly the most underestimated player who was in the lineup hits his first homer in a year in a half... I loved watching that, he was soo happy, that true baaseball to me.....

But Wang did set a MLB record, first player ever to have 3 assisits in one inning(I think it might be for a pitcher, becuase it doens't really seem that wierd)

Excellent game

Yeah great game all around. I agree on the bubba point, theres something about Crosby of all of the Yankees hitting the GW. Maybe its that hes the most underestimated but he has certainly playe GREAT in his last few games. I think he has had a few 3 hit games in the past few days. He has alot of heart.

Bubba is so loveable, even just his name. Bubba!

And Wang is doing great! I was at the first game he pitched when he came off the DL and am happy to see MUCH improvement on his part. The guy just isnt fazed it seems and I love him for it.

Really, there are games when a pitcher dominates. For a guy like RJ who is a strike out pitcher its when hes racking up the double digits. For a GB pitcher to only allow 1 fly ball out in 8 innings......thats dominate.

hahaha, its a major league record because you can only have 3 assists an inning no matter what. It's probably been tied 40,000 or so times.

I love what C-Ming did for us today, and I would love to have him start in the playoffs. Johnson, Wang, Mussina, Chacon? Personally, I think Chacon would be a huge boost to the bullpen, since he's done it before and he can save some innings on Gordon setting up. And were that to happen, I wouldn't mind having Aaron Small start a playoff game.

However, I want Jaret Wright nowhere near a postseason mound. I know, he's pitched well. But he gets amped up, overthrows and could cost us the game by the first inning. I'll take the calm and collected Small and Wang over that.

Oh, and Bubba better get more reps in the outfield. Besides his outstanding defense and good arm, he can do those things at the plate most of the lineup can't, like bunt and run. He's creeping that average up there too.

I agree, Wang throws strikes and when hes on they beat that ball into the ground. I think Chacon can be better in the pen then Wang would be when you consider Wang's struggles in the 1st inning. Right now I might trust Chacon in the 7th more as opposed to Sturtze in the 7th. As for Small I dont see how he doesnt get a start in the post season.

what a game. Wang was outstanding for 8 innings (except for the little bit of trouble he got into in the 1st and 3rd, if you even want to call it trouble), good defense, and not to mention a walkoff home run. Now I will be the first to admit that when Bubba walked up to the plate I was like "c'mon Torre, where's Ruben" but im glad he sent Bubba up. And to make the night even better TB wins (after almost giving me a heart attack when Baez gave up the homer to Ortiz with Manny coming up) and now were a game and a half back!!

You mean .5 game back

I've been saying that for weeks now! Ever since Sheff's injury...

Ruben has had maybe one or two good swings his entire time back, his defense is shaky (at best)...meanwhile Bubba is on an offensive tear (hitting .379 this month!) and there really aren't any questions about his defense.
