its true, i bet Youkilis getting injured recently was a decision factor in Ramirez's call up

Red Sox call up Craig Hansen, Hanley Ramirez

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | September 19, 2005

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. --Red Sox prospects Craig Hansen and Hanley Ramirez have joined the big club today in Tampa Bay, and will be activated in time for tonight’s game against the Devil Rays. The Double A seasons of both Hansen (reliever) and Ramirez (infielder) ended Saturday when the Porland Sea Dogs were eliminated from the playoffs. Only 13 games remain in the Sox season, and the club begins a six-game road swing tonight in Tampa, where media attention will be scant.

Hansen, in 11 games (postseason included) at Double A, has the following line: 12 2/3 IP, 0 R, 10 H, 3 BB, 10 K. However, he was shut down for about two weeks following his Aug. 26 appearance with a fatigued arm. In three appearances since then, he walked two and allowed one hit. Ramirez hit .271 with six homers, 52 RBIs, and 26 steals in 122 regular-season games with the Sea Dogs this season.

Rotoworld has also indicated Anibel Sanchez has been given the callup as well, even though he has reached his innigs pitched limit for the year

Anibal has NOT been called up. Rotoworld was just speculating that those 3 were possible callups, only Hansen and Hanley have actually been given the promotion.

Cape, you rule. Due to your incredible generosity, I might get a peek at two of our best farmhands during this series.

Glad to see both added to the roster.....and if we happen to have a runaway game, why not put all the young guys in to gain some experience. I'm hoping Hansen lives up to all the hype.....Go BoSox!

Hansen is impressive. I can see him closing games as soon as the all-star break next season.

I'd love to see Hanley get a start during this series. Tomorrow night is the perfect opportunity IMO. Graffanino is banged up and a righty is on the hill, so you can start Cora at 2nd and give E5 another night off. Hell, if Hanley makes 2 errors and goes 0-5, would it be any different than what we are getting now?

Recipe for sucsess, Starter First 6, Hansen 7th paps 8th, Timlin 9th

Too bad Hansen nor Papelbon (I dont believe) are postseason eligible. That would make for a good back end of the pen for the playoffs.

Was Papelbon on the roster Aug. 31st? I dont remember, if so then he is playoff eligible.

also, do you guys think it was a good idea bringing Hanley up. Seriously, not only will he be arbitration eligible a year earlier now, but now you guys have wasted an option year for 13 games. Now that will be one less year that you guys will be able to call him up and send him down (in case of injury on the MLB roster) without having to get him through waivers.

Papelbon has been on the roster since before sept 1, which makes him eligible. hansen can still get a spot on the roster, by taking over for one of the players who are injured for the rest of the season (Matt Mantei, Wade Miller, Gabe Kapler, Kevin Youkilis)

Papelbon came back up after the Aug. 31 deadline, but either him or Hansen could be eligible with Mantei's (on 60-day DL) spot. Both could be eligible if Miller gets upgraded from the 15-day to the 60-day.

With the injury to Youkilis, they wanted another IF and some speed on the bench. It's not a bad move IMO. The Sox have a big operating budget like the Yankees, so arbitration time is the least of their worries in a pennant race.

The 60-day DL replacement rule mandates that pitchers may only replace pitchers, fielders for fielders. Youk wasn't up before Sept. 1.

youk was up before the sept 1 deadline, i know that. i can remember vividly he was called up on august 31 to make him playoffs eligible

I thought he came up on Sept. 1. My bad. Either way, you can't use his spot for a pitcher. Hansen and Papelbon will only be eligible via Mantei and Miller's spots.

oh well, doesnt matter now. hansen will most likely take over for mantei or miller in the rosters spot, but papelbon is already playoffs eligible since he has been on the team since mid-August. I wonder who will be the backup for 3rd base if the Sox do make it past last game of the regular season

he was certainly a bright spot in otherwise s***** and annoying night.

I was hoping tito would let him pitch the next inning.

but the kid looks like he has the stuff and will hopefully help in the next two weeks...our bullpen couldnt get any worse.

onwards and upwards...

I'm not actually worried about the bullpen at this point. I'm worried about the starters. These guys needs to really put it together the last two weeks. This 2 inning crap is starting to piss me off. I knew Hansen would be a bright spot and although Papelbon struggled I feel good throwing him into a game late when we have the lead. Timlin is gold for the 9th....the problem is we are just not getting there. Tim Wakefield can't do this by himself....all the guys in the rotation need to battle to the 7th inning. Nice to see they are not panicing.....because they really should....maybe that would give them a spark as opposed to this laziness I am watching.

Yea but that arbitration stuff doesnt seem like a big deal, but it really is. For instanc,e we could have been paying Jeter a "reasonable" salary when he was arbitration eligible, but instead Cashman offered a dirt salary and Jeter won his hearing, granting him loads of money. money that could have been used in other places. But not that it matters, we were the best team in 1998.

So with the 60 day DL thing, if a pitcher for instance is on the 60 day DL, is any other pitcher who was called up after September 1st is eligible to take his spot?

yea but didnt Papelbon go down again before August 31st. As far as I know you have to be ON THE ROSTER ON AUGUST 31st to be playoff eligible. (unless you have a guy on the 60day DL of coarse)

Papelbon has been ON THE ROSTER SINCE BEFORE & ON AUGUST 31

get your facts straight, he was sent back down but was called up permanently to make couple more starts, against Detroit and the Angels and then was kept on board full time to be a reliever in the bullpen

August 16 start vs detroit

August 21 start vs angels

August 25 relief appearance vs royals

August 27 relief appearance vs detroit

August 29 relief appearance vs devil rays

No reason he'd have to wait that long. Huston Street stepped right in early for the A's... and if Foulke blows as much next year as he has this year, dude's gone.

Francona's timidity about using young talent is what I think will hold him back, not his talent. However, if Timlin can't be relied on and Foulke can't return to form, it may force his hand.
