Craig Hansen closing games now would be a mistake. What if he becomes Boston's new goat? It could forever shatter his confidence.

I think they mean next season, because a few posts up someone said "...if Foulke blows next season" or something like that. I agree this year would be a little soon, but next year, why not? He has closer stuff.

Oh ok next season would probably work out, although I'm sure at 22 (?) he would still need some polish, most closers are set up men for a couple of years first, so might go through some growing pains.

True Rivera set-up Wetteland, K-Rod set up (his name is slipping my mind  ). I'm not annointing Hansen those two's status yet but I see what your saying. But if you look at our bullpen, Foulke is the only thing in his way from closing. And if he isn't what he was in 2004, I think Hansen should go in and close, ala Huston Street.

Heh, growing pains...LOL, I think in Boston (and New York) any position (closer, set-up, starter, position player, bench player) is under heavy scrunity and will experience growing pains.

Perivcal.

True this isn't much blocking Hansen, and I doubt the Sox would make a play for Ryan or Wagner knowing they have Hansen. The Boston pen has been pretty bad this year (although the Yankees aren't any better after the 1-2 punch, I hope Cox and some of other minor league relievers can help us soon) so he will probably be relied upon next year.

Thanks! I hate it when you see their faces in your mind and don't remember their name. Yes our pen has been bad, worst statistically last I heard. Doesn't surprise me, especially after tonight.

Hansen hasn't pitched a full season of pro ball and all of a sudden he's next year's closer? He'll be in Pawtucket to start the spring. He might need a little coaching and time to master his slider before he starts clsoing out big league games.

The FO made a desperate call to bring him up now and toss some heat. Too bad Tito didn't bring him in tonight to fire up a K in the 8th.

If Foulke struggles, why not? But if Foulke is fine, then let Hansen set him up like K-Rod and Rivera did before they got their closer roles.

Didn't Hansen get a "dead arm" this month after a half season of pro ball? Who knows what this kid is made of? No one can tell simply because he blew away double A hitters and three Devil Rays.

The "dead arm" he got is similar to what many pitchers experience in spring training when they start throwing for the first time since the winter break. He didn't pitch for two months (Boras, his agent, told him not to throw after his college season) before he came to the farm system. He's got the best stuff on our pitching staff right now. Yeah, he can grow a little in the mental department. And, yeah, his slider could look a little sharper. But not using him in the closer role if Timlin/Foulke aren't getting the job done just because you are worried about his psyche is a little nuts. He's either got the head to recover from a bad outing, or he doesn't. I hate the "china-doll" approach some people use with rookies and their confindence.
