Olerud def needs to stay on, his defense alone i way better than Petagine

Sox get Steve Traschel, and a minor leaguer

Mets get Roberto Petagine, and Abe Alavarez

I don't like trading Abe because we're short on lefty arms in the pen as is. He may not have done great last night, but I'm willing to stick with him for a few more outtings before I'd feel comfortable moving him. I really don't want to move any 1B besides Millar, because that would mean more PT for Millar.

Obviously if Theo could convice the Mets to take on fatass that would be nothing short of a miracle.

I knew Millar for Trachsel was too good to be true.

If they want Petagine or Olerud, I say Petagine. Olerud is better defensively, and he doesn't have the same power potential, but he's much more experienced at the major league level.

C'mon Theo, bring us Steve Trachsel. This guy is an innings eater who could really help save our bullpen-- and he's a decent pitcher to boot.

We don't really have relievers to spare though.

Sox will be getting another lefty reliever in the bullpen, Matt Perisho (an ex Marlin) will be called up on Thursday. In 12 games with the Paw Sox has done very well posting a 2.13 ERA. In his time with the Marlins this season in 24 games had a very nice 1.93 ERA. I think he had got injured this season so they had moved him down to Triple A for a rehab assignment, where he had pretty much faltered having an ERA of under 12. But seeing things go so far, that Marlins Triple A was probably just him trying to get back into the groove he had earlier on.

Trachsel on radar

The Red Sox continued to make changes to their beleaguered pitching staff in anticipation of the September stretch yesterday by claiming right-handed reliever Chad Harville off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Another significant move could be coming today with the addition of Steve Trachsel.

Sources from multiple teams said the Sox and New York Mets were involved in serious discussions last night about a deal that would bring veteran right-hander Trachsel to Boston for one or two minor leaguers.

Trachsel returned to the mound for the first time in five months (following surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back) Friday and allowed only two hits in eight scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants, but he learned shortly thereafter that he was being skipped the next time through the Mets' rotation.

Trachsel and New York GM Omar Minaya denied Sunday that a trade was being mulled, but that apparently changed yesterday. One source said that the Sox and Mets were close enough to a deal that they were simply settling on the minor leaguer(s), but another said that the sides weren't close but were still talking.

Trachsel, 34, has cleared waivers, which facilitates a deal. Players need to be in an organization by the end of August to qualify for inclusion on postseason rosters.

The acquisition of Trachsel would solve the problem of who is going to start in place of suspended David Wells Friday in the series opener vs. Baltimore. If Trachsel's not around, the Sox will probably opt for calling up Lenny DiNardo for the fifth time from Triple-A Pawtucket. Jonathan Papelbon appears to be an unlikely candidate to start because the Sox are leery of overtaxing the rookie's arm by moving him back and forth between the rotation and bullpen.

Harville, 28, was 0-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 37 games for the Astros this season but he had a 1.17 ERA in his last 13 appearances dating back to July 17. He is scheduled to be in uniform today.

omg i really hope a deal is in place, even if sox have to give up an abe alvarez or brandon moss, because lets face it, pitching is the key down the stretch right now. Traschel could save Sox from having to go to a minor leaguer on friday game 1 against the Orioles. Then take Bronson's slot, and place Bronson in the pen as a long reliever

New York is in search of offense and could use help at first base. The Mets are said to have an interest in either John Olerud or Roberto Petagine . Ironically, Olerud played for the Mets between 1997-99 and Petagine was a Met in '96 and '97.

But the Mets would want far more than a 30-something first baseman in return, and would likely ask for a top prospect, also. Trachsel makes $6.5 million this season and has an affordable base salary ($2.5 million) in the form of an option for 2006.

top prospect?!??!!?

top prospects such as Lester, Hanley, Pedroia, Hansen are pretty much off the tabs, future Red Sox players. But, theres always Sanchez and Alvarez who were both rumored to be in the dud AJ Burnett trade deal----but hey why not Kelly Shoppach?? I mean the Mets will lose Mike Piazza next season. I say Sox go for it, to get a quality starting pitcher through the September pennant push. Roberto Petagine is more of the oddman out than Olerud

I think he would help but my god we need people to step up.....this is just a huge list of potential pitchers and few of them have a true assignment:

Schilling, Wells, Clement, Wakefield, Arroyo, Miller, Foulke, Timlin, Hansen, Papelbon, Perisho, Myers, Bradford, Gonzalez, Alvarez, DiNardo, and lets throw in Trachsel.

Steve Trachsel would be a starter since he has started basically his whole career. Which means more guys are up in the air to determine there true position. Once September hits they need to come up with a rotation, get everyone healthy, and settle in on what players need to do from here out.

I haven't seen Trachsel pitch so I don't know wut kinda stuff he has. Can't say if I like this trade or not until I see him pitch.

While the Sox have to be careful not to give up too much for this guy, I'd love to see him here in Boston. I don't think too much is really up in the air SITN...

Clement, Schilling, Wells, and Wakefield are starters the rest of the season without question. Barring a miracle comeback by Miller or a trade for a guy like Steve T., Arroyo's got that #5 spot. All those other guys you've mentioned are relievers, barring one spot start for Wells.

I don't think there's much question that if Trachsel came in Arroyo would move to the pen and hopefully help stabilize that situation down there.

Timlin's the closer until Foulke is ready and effective.

Hansen has been shut down for the season according to Gordon Edes.

dude why are you complaining about what mets are getting, and not getting excited about what the Sox would get in return?

I'm anaylzing the deal for both sides. It's weird that the Mets would give up a pitcher, who is better than Victor Zambrano AND Tom Glavine for just Kevin Millar. This deal won't happen, Minaya isn't that dumb.

I've read rumors that have the deal being Petagine and Alvarez for Trachsel and a minor leaguer to be named later.

I guess someone didn't actually read the thread.

The Red Sox' efforts to acquire pitcher Steve Trachsel from the New York Mets appeared to die yesterday. According to sources, Mets general manager Omar Minaya, who was involved with discussions with the Sox Monday night, had second thoughts and decided against trading the veteran right-hander.

so who knows which report is right

I really do hope it takes place, as Lenny Dinardo or some other minor leaguer would get the start tomorrow against the Orioles. and ugh hearing that Wells has been sent to the commisioner's office doesnt sound very good at all
