If schilling pitches well wich starter will be taken from the rotation and were will he go? And what about papelbon is he still in the rotation?
Posted
I say, keep Papelbon in the pen. The rotation should include Schilling, Wells, Arroyo, Wakefield, and Clement (not in that order) and Papelbon should be the first option for a gap starter/long innings relief. If he proves effective then maybe he could move into the setup role, but I would much rather use Hansen in that capacity (or even Foulke, in combination with Timlin if Hansen can close).

assuming schilling does, well....seems the plan was to wait for foulke, now we are moving schilling to the rotation?

I guess it changes--frankly, we need our starting pitching to be flawless becuase our bullpen is f***ing bad.

I think our bullpen is really going to come together. Foulke is supposedly stronger than ever, you could argue that Timlin should have been an All-Star, Jeremi Gonzalez has pitched extremely well of lately (in his last five starts -- 6 IP -- he's given up three hits and no runs), Myers has been good all season & Delcarmen has great potential. Things are going to get good with this pen, real good.

I agree. I'm really looking forward to the September call-ups.

The bullpen could potentially be Gonzo, Timlin, Delcarmen, Myers, Hansen, Bradford, Papelbon, Lester, Foulke and Dinardo for the stretch run.

Our bullpen in October probably will end up looking like this:

CL: Foulke

SU: Timlin

MR: Papelbon

MR: Hansen

MR: Bradford

MR: Myers

LR: Wakefield/Arroyo/Miller (the guy who doesn't make the postseason rotation)

Postseason rotation (if we make it there, which we will)

1. Schilling

2. Wells

3. Clement

4. Arroyo

Um I'd much rather Wake as a starter since he's proven himself and I'd rather not have Tek catching him outta the pen, eek.

On second though, you're right. Arroyo would be a much better option out of the pen against RH batters. RH hitters have a paltry .272 OBP against Bronson.

Why not make Papelbon the closer untill Foulke comes back? He was very impressive as a starter VERY impressive in the first inning of his starts. He has the prototype fastball that closers have 95 MPH with a late explosion, we should at least give him a try.

I agree that Papelbon should be starter until Foulke is ready to claim the role. I don't think Foulke should be closing as soon as he comes back. Naturally, Remlinger should be DFAed upon Foulke's return.

That being said, the rotation should be Schilling-Wells-Clement-Wakefield-Arroyo

As far as Wade Miller goes, he should be put into the pen as well

Posted
yea but maybe his shoulder needed the rest, he has proven to be a good starter in the past. I wouldn't put him in in a close game but then again, as I'm typing this, if there is a guy in the bullpen who you're worried about putting in a close game, then he shouldn't be there so I don't think it would be a bad idea to DL him for the rest of the year
Posted
In the past yes and if we were the Cardinals and were already a lock for the division, I would give him a chance. We are 4 games up on the Yankees and cannot afford to "give the guy a chance" down the stretch.
Posted
Sizzlin cant be more right. We cant afford to give any games away at this point giving people a chance to prove themselves. At this point, we need every game we can get.
Posted
Yeah are we going to have enough 7 run leads by the end of the seaosn where we can find some use for him by the time he's "ready". We really have no use for Miller naymore, it would be best to put him on the DL, leave him there, and let him go sign somewhere else at season's end.

My two cents on the rotation talk:

Everything will depend on Schilling's return. If he's able to transition himself successfully to that role, that will be a huge pickup and allow the team to do some things with the bottom of the rotation.

IF Schill is healthy/effective:

1. Schilling

2. Wells

3. Clement

4. Wakefield

5. Arroyo

IF no Schill:

1. Wells

2. Clement

3. Wakefield

4. Arroyo

5. Papelbon/Miller

If the team makes the playoffs without Schilling, Arroyo's GOT to be a starter. If Schilling is healthy and effective, Arroyo's the best man to be headed to the bullpen.

If Foulke comes back healthy and effective, the bullpen should be good enough.

CL: Foulke

SU: Timlin

MR: Bradford

MR: Myers

MR: Papelbon (if not starting)

MR/LR: Gonzalez

Some september callups should make this interesting (Delcarmen, Hansen) but I don't see the team taking rookies like this into important games (see their use of Delcarmen when he was up with the big club), so I'd be surprised if anyone but Timlin or Bradford was given a "closer" role if Foulke isn't able to come back.

If Schilling and Foulke both are effective in September, this team SHOULD win the division. If one of them comes back, it'll be a very tight race coming down to the last series in Boston. If neither one comes back, I have some serious doubts about their chances, and if they do squeak out a playoff spot without Schilling or Foulke-- their chances in the playoffs are even slimmer IMO.

Bottom line: We need both Schilling and Foulke to come back to their 2004 performance levels if we have any hopes of going deep into October.

.....I think Wade needs to stay out for the season and come back next year for us. I still think he is going to be awesome when fully healthy but this team is making it no secret they are looking to win now and can't afford messing up (no more Bellhorn, Millar being benched, Schilling back to the rotation).

I think the rotation comes down to Papelbon vs. Arroyo. If Papelbon can survive later in the innings I think he will be huge. If not then I think you need to use him as a flame thrower in the bullpen. Bullpen should look like:

CU: Keith Foulke (RH)

SU: Mike Timlin (RH)

SU: Mike Myers (LH)

RP: Chad Bradford (RH)

RP: Jeremi Gonzalez (RH)

RP: Craig Hansen (RH)

RP: Jon Papelbon(RH)

Obivously the downside is a lack of LHP. However there aren't many options so the Sox bullpen will just have to go with the best arms. Craig Hansen is a huge "?" but there are other alternatives. Maybe, Mike Remlinger can put it together. He may be good for just one out as opposed to a whole inning. An outlook on the possible post season:

Game 1: Schilling

Game 2: Clement

Game 3: Wells

Game 4: Wakefield

.....with Arroyo and Gonzalez on "stand by"

They got to be using Hansen in either set-up or closer role.

Yeah I don't know a lot about him. After reading in the minor league section people saying he is better or as good as Houston Street....fine make him the closer lol...I wanna see it first though
