Garciaparra exits with back pain

Oft-injured shortstop listed as day-to-day

HOUSTON -- Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra hit a solo homer Wednesday night, but had to leave the game after 4 1/2 innings because of stiffness in his lower back. He was listed as day-to-day.

Garciaparra hit the second homer of his injury-shortened season with one out in the fourth off Houston's Roy Oswalt. Garciaparra was batting .157 when he was sidelined with a groin injury April 20, and since coming back was hitting .350 (14-for-40) with two homers in 12 games.

But Garciaparra made a costly error in the Astros' fourth. Houston loaded the bases and Mike Lamb then hit a grounder to Derrek Lee, who threw to Garciaparra for the force at second. Garciaparra then threw to first to Zambrano, who was covering, but the throw was wild and two runs scored.

Neifi Perez came in as a defensive replacement at short in the Astros' half of the fifth inning

Agree with yeszir. Nomar was the guy who made me start liking the Sox all those years ago, and in my mind all this bashing of the guy is stupid. Yeah, he's a liability, but that's why the Cubs only re-signed him to a one year contract. He's a fantastic player and a great guy, so hopefully he's back out there soon.

I always liked Nomar and still do, but if you believe in bad charma (sp?), certainly that's what's happening to Nomar.

He turned down a pretty lucrative deal from the Red Sox (twice), then got hurt in his contract year, sulked around because the Red Sox tried to trade him (because he was greedy), then signed a 1 year deal (to try to up his value), and got hurt again.

Nomar was one of my favorite players also, and I certainly NEVER wish injury on anyone. It sucks that he's suffering through this, but...

The Red Sox are lucky he turned down that deal.

I feel for the guy, no doubt, but I'm not going to go as far as calling him a "nice guy" come on. The guy actually accused the grounds crew of intentionally screwing with the dirt. I mean re you kidding me? I feel bad for the guy, and I loved him as a player but he's still an ass.

yeah, nice guy???...he was a pouting little ass. I think history is being kind to nomar, he did turn down 60 million, but while there is no question he was a great player--- I never got the impression he was a nice guy. I think some of his fans have created this image of him as maybe shy... but from I know he was an *******..

Neifi Perez has been more than adequate as his replacement. Pleasant surprise for the Cubs, who at this point at going after the WC. Plus it's not like the Cubs are stuck with Garciaparra for a long time; he's a FA at the end of the season.

Poor Mia. ;)
