I saw this rumor on pro sports daily. I was just wondering if it was true or not b/c this would be a great pick up heading towards the end of the season. He is incedible he has a 1.32 ERA (11-4 record) with the Red Sox he would have at least 20+ wins. Our run support and his ERA! Anyway I'll post the link below.

Waivers are generally kept secret in the industry. Rumor has it that the Red Sox recently claimed Roger Clemens and the Yankees claimed Andy Pettitte. The Astros withdrew both of them. It is also believed the Yankees had a waiver deal in place for Jamie Moyer but the Seattle lefty declined, citing his no-trade rights. Moyer earlier refused trades to Houston and Florida.

it would be a hell of an uplifting story, dont get me wrong its just Houston is in a push to get the NL wild card. im taking this with a grain of salt right now.

This happens every year at this time. The waiver moves are usually kept a secret. they are made by almost all GM's in an attempt to make deals by August 31st. If the player clears, they can trade him. If another team or teams claim him ( the team with the worst record gets him ) then the waiving team can retract the waiver ( they can do this once ). The Astro's cancelled the waiver. BTW, the Yanks claimed Andy Petite ( who was also cancelled ). Interestingly, Jr. Griffey was not claimed, setting up a possible trade to the White Sox.

haha, yeah right, they have the best starting 3 in the NL maybe the major leagues. didn't this same story surface last year too. And why wouldn't the yankees take him....cuz they can block any deals to us.

Sox fan on Cape pointed this out already, but I'll re-iterate:

The Astros recalled Clemens and Pettite when they were claimed by the Red Sox and Yankees respectively. Which means that they are still property of the Astros, and if placed on waivers again, they CANNOT revoke it and WILL lose the player.

Those two guys are staying in Houston.

Pettitte has been my favorite player forever. And boy would he make a difference this year. Why exactly are they trying to clear those guys through waivers if they are leading the Wild Card? Don't make sense to try and trade them now.

Because by putting them on waivers now, they can have someone claim them, then they can take them off waivers and keep them, and if they want to trade them they can put them back on waivers and get the best deal for them.

Something like that, i think. Someone will be able to tell you better.

Right, the waivers move would make sense if they would want to trade them, but they presumably don't. Maybe they did it to get attention, kinda like a "Hey! Don't forget about us!" move.

Nope, if they put them on again, and they're claimed there is no comphensation.

I thought that if a team puts someone on waivers and another team claims them, that if they decided to eventually trade that player the team that claimed them is the only team that player could go to. :dunno:

As a Red Sox fan I hated Pettite, as a baseball fan I loved him. That guy slammed the door everytime the Yankees seemed to be skididng he would get on the hill nad pitch a gem. A really great pitcher.

He also always seemed to pitch when Pedro did, always screwed him by one run.

correct. If he clears then he can be traded to any team, but if hes claimed, he can be withdrawn, but negotiations can still take place for a trade between the team that placed the player on waivers and the team that claimed him. They can put him on waivers again after they "pull him back", but they do not have the ability to pull back again meaning that the team that claims him, gets him.

I find it hard to believe that George would let Clemens get past the Yankees and give Boston the opprotunity to claim him. But I also find it odd that we didnt claim Griffey, but we really didnt, so you never know.

Most teams place all or most of their players on waivers during the waiver period, just out of curiosity of who would claim them, not necessarily to trade them. I can guarantee you that neither Clemens or Pettitte will be traded (unless they lose all of their games from now until the August 31st deadline, and Washington , or any of the other teams in the race, wins all of their game.). But if one of them were, it would be Clemens, because odds are that Roger comes back next year with Houston, and why not, he wouldhave his son in spring training, hes argueably the best pitcher in the majors, hes pitching in his hometown, etc. But if they traded both, or just Pettitte, its HIGHLY unlikely Clemens will re-sign next year.

Technically, that would be illegal, since its a pay for service. Mods correct me if I'm wrong.
