I don't know about everyone else but I really like him. The guy can hit the ball and he can hit for power which the Sox don't exactly have a lot of HRs coming from the 1B position. If I heard correctly yesturday he has won gold gloves in Japan, an MVP in 2001 and averaged over 30 HRs a season?? Also was tearing up AAA Pawtucket. It appears he is settling down the last couple games and hitting the ball hard. Driving in runs from the back of the lineup. Personally I think he should stick around and continue to play.

What does everyone else think of him?

We arent sure if Japanese power or Triple A power translates into MLB power, but he does sting the ball. At this point I guess he has good Gap power. His Japanese numbers compare considerably to Hideki Matsui so I guess it is a wait and see. His glove looks a little shaky, maybe he is just a little nervous. He appears to have a very good swing, last night going the other way with a tough outside pitch for two RBI. He also appears pretty patient and takes what pitchers give him. Id like for him to get a long look but you know that Olerud will be back at some point and Francona absolutely LOVES Millar for some reason. He must put up some really good numbers so it makes it hard for them to send him packing for AAA.

see the millar brady thread--I dont think you can say he's hitting....a few measly singles--read els' posts....

I cant figure out why kevin's in the lineup.

Roberto has had a couple of hits that were far more clutch than anything kevin could do..But I am anxious to see Olerud back..

Petagine's been OK so far for the Red Sox. 6 games is hardly a great measure of how he'll do at the big league level, but he's been solid so far. 6 RBIs in 6 games, he doesn't strike out a lot (2 K's in 14 ABs) and his ability to hit the ball hard the other way is certainly a good sign.

I don't think he's as good as John Olerud, so when John comes back he'll likely be headed to Pawtucket, but I won't lose any sleep over Roberto taking time from Kevin Millar. Of course, nobody on this board should be surprised that I just said that.

Of course, my heart stops every time I see Kevin playing the outfield, so if getting Petagine in the game means seeing Millar in Right or Left field, I'm against it.

Terry Francona mentioned playing the "hot player" when he talks about his platoon situations, but he doesn't back up his words with his actions. Graffanino was rewarded for his great game on Monday by being benched last night. Petagine had 2 RBIs last night, which will probably mean a benching soon.

garffanino hurt his hand in the game on monday which may accoutn for tito's move with the lineup last night.

as far as kevin goes, I wish my beer was as cold as he has been. he must have pictures of terry with sheep.

gabes reward for hitting home run was the pine as well.

I take my Tony G comment back, I was unaware of his injury.

That having been said, there are other examples. Kevin Youkilis has done nothing but hit hit hit when he's in the lineup, yet he gets shuttled back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket. The Red Sox show NO PATIENCE with Jose Cruz Jr, who had a rough start in Boston, yet they continue to play Millar despite the fact that he's horrendous. Terry's decision making process is astoundingly confusing. That sheep picture idea seems very likely... although it took an injury to get Bellhorn out of the lineup, so it seems like this is what Terry does. He also stuck with Kevin last year when he sucked, only this year he sucks more than ever.

And playing the hot hand? Kapler's been VERY good since coming to Boston. He's been red hot. He's a better defender than fatass, yet he still rides the pine while Millar embarasses himself and the organization on the field every day.

They didn't need Jose Cruz Jr. hence the reason he is gone. They figured they had enough depth in the outfield.

Millar hasn't sucked in the outfield, when is the last time he made an error? In fact he made that awesome catch the other night.

an awesome catch..??

he looked like a cow falling out of a wheel chair on a routine fly ball.

he has the range of steven hawkings and is a liability every where but at the buffet table...

Whats wrong with Petagine's defense??? I know he had "1" error the other day.....but thats pretty normal for the Red Sox. Even the great John Olerud had an error for the Red Sox. Was I incorrect about the gold gloves in Japan???

Looking at his career in the majors...although short most of the time....he has only 2 errors. Hmmm

Posted

he has missed a few short hops which were throwing errors, I suppose..but I bet olerud would have had, he had than one throught he legs..he has just looked a little lost (ther was a foul pop up and I swear he didnt know where to go) which is where the word shaky came from..

Looking at it objectively its too short a time to really judge, he seems like he deserves a shot...he hits better than fatso and thus is a step up until olerud gets back.

Well, regardless of what he's done so far, he's only got another week to make an impression. We know they're not going dump Millar, so leaves Olerud. So it comes down to, barring injury, Olerrud vs. Petagine. I think Olerud wins hands down. This is his chance to impress for a Sept. call-up and an invitation to Spring Training.

What if Petagine is actually the next Hideki Matsui?? I mean yeah we need to wait and see but those are huge numbers that are hard to ignore. Defense easily goes to Olerud, I have to say hitting goes to Petagine, and personality to Millar.

Would be nice to put all three of them together and create one solid all around player for 1st.

Yes, " We have the technology to make you, bigger, faster, stronger" , the bionic clone...on roids.

you call it personality I call it a loud mouthed borish fat ass..

I agree with soxie...olerud..

Believe me I hope he puts up some big numbers it would be nice to have some power at that position (that was a kevin bash) but next season we can worry about that later...

Calling him the Next Matsui is a stretch. Matsui is a pretty damn good player. I posted that he had similar stats in Japan to Matsui, but I wouldnt go as far as comparing the two at a big league level. I think Matsui is a much more superior player. Dont get me wrong Petagine looks like he can hit a little but I think that Olerud is a more polished player off the bench. I say off the bench because we all know that no matter what Millar will have his fat ass back over at first base soon enough.

he hit a home run, so that makes him better than millar. i like the guy he has had some clutch hits, which also differntiates him from millar...I know they will probably use olerud and milllar but I would love to see roberto and olerud in there.

The problem with Olerud and Petagine together is that both of them are lefties-- and it would be nice to also have a righthanded option at first.

That having been said, Roberto has certainly been more productive than Kevin Millar this month. In less than HALF the at bats, Roberto has 4 times as many RBIs (8 to 2) and has accumulated only 3 fewer total bases this month. Same number of walks, only 3 fewer runs....

Plain and simple, Roberto has hit when put into the lineup so far: .333/.400/.556 In August.

Millar in August: .239/.265/.283.

No contest.

lefty / righty....i dont care as long as the guy can hit. If Petagine can hit the ball consistently...I see no reason to have a righty opposite him. Youk could fill in if need be. I really like this batting lineup:

Damon

Renteria

Ortiz

Ramirez

Nixon

Varitek

Petagine

Mueller

Graffanino

The best part about your lineup is that Millar's not in it. Even without Nixon (who's hurt), I'd put Kapler in right field, bat him ninth, and shift everyone else down a slot. Obviously, it's nice to have Nixon in there... but until he comes back-- more Gabe, less Millar.
