As in the Yankees acquiring the Burnett and send Pavano back to Marlins, and I would presume picking up much of the tab in extending Burnett who has health concerns and covering Pavano's contract since the Marlins don't spend much?

Back to square one. Doubt it because we're looking for cheap washed-up pitchers DFA'd/on waivers for no prospects and the checkbook is starting to hit the fan.

Applications?

i have insider but don't see an article on pavano, but i've heard the M's want him for winn and menche (sp?)

heres what insider said about winn: Sooner or later, if they're going to make the playoffs, the Yankees have to find a way to catch some fly balls to center field. And more and more, Winn looks like their most likely acquisition. The Yankees have talked about Eric Byrnes, but aren't sure he's the answer. They've talked about Jose Cruz Jr., but have big health worries about him. So with Mark Kotsay no longer on the market, that essentially leaves Winn as the one acceptable, obtainable center-field commodity. "There's actually a lot of interest in him," says an official of one team that has been in touch with Seattle about Winn. "He's not an impact player. But he is what he is -- a nice, complementary player." Winn can pick up his own option for next year at a modest $3.75 million. So the Mariners aren't hell-bent to move him -- which is one obstacle for the Yankees. The other hangup is the old, what-do-the-Yankees-have-to-trade problem. The Mariners prefer a young player who can be a regular contributor by no later than next season. So the two teams are having a tough time "finding the right match," according to one baseball official. But it's hard to envision the Yankees not making some kind of move to upgrade center field. And Winn looms as the logical fit.

I don't think Randy Winn would be a bad fit in CF for the Yankees. He gives them some speed at the top of the lineup and has a lot more range than bernie does out there in center. However, I don't see how the Yankee's can keep morgaging the future. You're starved for SPs, Moose is old, RJ is old, KB is old, Leiter is old, Pavano is hurt, Wright is always hurt. Now looking at that pitching staff the last thing I'm worried about is getting a CFer. I would be trying to acquire some young pitching, even if it couldn't help me until next year. Now I understand how the Yankees are run, and I guess for the here and now it's a good trade if the Yanks only give up a SP prospect.

The two rumors I heard relating Pavano were the ones already stated:

Pavano to the Marlins in a potential AJ Burnett deal

Pavano to the Mariners in a Meche + Winn type deal.

I think Winn is EXACTLY what the Yankees need right now. A relatively cheap, durable centerfielder with speed and good defensive ability. He's no Griffey Jr namewise, but he's the guy they want complementing Williams. Even if you use him as a pinch runner/late inning defensive replacement, he's valuable. He could also spell Sheffield and Matsui at times, neither of which are spring chickens.

However, trading Pavano to get Winn seems like it hurts the Yankees more than it helps them. This team is desperate for pitching sending their youngest starter out of town after just a half season?

Unfortunately, the Yankees don't have much else to offer. They could talk about prospects like Henn, Cano, Duncan, Cabrera but Cashman has been adament about NOT moving those guys.

It seems to me like the only deals the Yankees could make right now are salary dump trades. In that kind of deal, the team doesn't usually request a lot of talent in return. The Yankees have the prospects to add a player or (maybe) two, but in my opinion would be a very very bad idea to do that.

There is no way Pavano gets traded to the Marlins for Burnett. How would the Marlins give up a trade for Arroyo and Sanchez and take Pavano. That is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard. For starters, Arroyo is a better pitcher than Pavano and costs a ton less. I think its just something to be put in the air since the Yanks have been dead quiet for a change.
