I think I know how they are making room for manny delcarmen, watching nesn pre-game report--on bottom scroll showing the updates like lineups, then next on the bottom scroll was John Halamma Designated for Assignment, who was doing bad with a 6.18 ERA, not surprised or saddened by this call by Theo

The Red Sox will not trade Alan Embree, he has a clause in his contract which call for a 1 million dollar bonus, if he is traded. Now, what team would take that on that kind of money for someone who has a 7.5 era?

Boston adds reliever Delcarmen, drops Halama

July 26, 2005

The Boston Red Sox called up right-handed reliever Manny Delcarmen and designated left-hander John Halama for assignment on Tuesday. Delcarmen, a second-round draft pick by Boston in 2000, had a 2.79 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 9 2-3 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket. He began the season at Double-A Portland, where he was 4-4 with three saves and a 3.23 ERA in 31 games. Halama was part of an ineffective Red Sox bullpen, going 1-1 with a 6.16 ERA in 30 games, 29 in relief, since signing as a free agent last December. His major league career began with Houston in 1998 and he pitched for Tampa Bay last season.

The Red Sox have 10 days to decide whether to waive him or trade him. He is the second lefty reliever designated for assignment by Boston in eight days, following Alan Embree. Delcarmen, a Boston native, has 353 strikeouts in 326 2-3 innings over five minor-league seasons with a 19-22 record, four saves and a 3.80 ERA in 98 games. He pitched in JUST four games in the 2003 season, when he underwent elbow ligament surgery.

?? the red sox have no other option but to trade him off, contract does require sox to pay him $1 million but only if the 10 day period has ended, a trade to another team would require that team to pay him that ammount. Actually teams such as the Diamondbacks, Mets, Yankees, and Angels have said to be interested in acquiring him to be more of a lefty specialist pitcher than a set-up man

If we don't trade him in the 10 day period, he becomes a free agent.

What I was saying, is that if the Red Sox trade him within that time period, they owe him an ADDITIONAL 1 million dollars, on top of his contract.

If they don't, they don't owe him the money.

That's pretty hilarious. I hope the Yankees or Angels try to use Embree as a lefty specialist, because as I've said about 1,000 times, he's not a lefty specialist. Lefthanded hitters were hitting .304 against him when he was DFA'd!!

The Red Sox hope also that they can get SOMEthing for him, because otherwise he goes for nothing. I agree with Crespo though that it'll be difficult to get some value for him, but on the other hand, the Red Sox got something for BK Kim... why not Embree?

yankees signing this month Darrell May, Tim Redding, Al Leiter and now Hideo Nomo, haha, I would be surprised even if they make the wild card with the recent transactions. Brown is more likely than head to the DL again with Pavano now being pushed back to mid-August. They cant have Johnson & Mussina pitch everyday and hit as many homeruns that they can to make up for the pitching woes.

Does anyone think that Manny Delcarmen was brought up as a showcase? I mean we have plenty of other pitchers, that are better than Delcarmen, in the minors.

Thats what the nesn pre-game report, gordon edes and chris snow both suggested that since this is just before the trade deadline and only having pitched 9 innings in triple A, yeah it could very well be a showcase to entice teams to trade with them. sucks to cuz he has the makings to be a great pitcher, as well as with him being a Boston native, Sox were the team he grew up idolizing
