I guess it's a little bit past the halfway mark of the season, so I wanted to see what you all thought our best starter was.

I think our best starter right now, and who I'd pitch in an important game is without question David Wells. Has anyone realized that he probably is the best starter on our staff?

yeah he has been great as of late. But no one has been consistent all year which annoys me. But i think maybe 2 weeks from now Schilling might return to the rotation. I don't know, i hope he does soon then we would have consistancy. But for right now it is wells

I go with Tim Wakefield, the veteran starter and player of the team, been here since '95, is showing no tear only when he had went straight 5 games losing when Mirabelli was on the DL. I mean who started their hot sreak in June after a bad start, it was our boy Wake, game against Chicago where he had 2 hits and even scored a run from 1st base. Tough guy as there is any with last game against NY going all the way for a complete game giving his offsense a chance to come from behind. For seven straight games, he has now gone seven full innings or more. Plus with Matt Clement starting to falter, he now leads in ERA 4.12, and with 126 2/3 innings pitched. I was so glad to hear they signed him for a contract extension on April 19, same day as my bday haha

Would you go with David Wells or Tim Wakefield in a game 1 of a playoff series?

Wells is definetly your best starter. Clement is starting to faulter (ala Vazquez), but Wells appears to get better as the season moves on, which is always true. He's great for a stretch run and he's one of the best big game pitchers I have had the pleasure to watch.

sorry if im sticking by the veteran player of the team, isnt this supposed to be thread of "who do you think is best starter?" not, "you cant have your opinion, because we say its david wells"

Wow, you're offened easily. I simply asked a question on who would be the better postseason starter.

I think if Clement locates his pitches, he's got the best stuff on the current staff. Well's knows how to get guys out. He's more consistent in that you know what you are going to get, but I think Clement could shut down any team in the league if he has his control.

That really just avoids the question, but I figure it's not a clear cut question anyways.

Why is every body suddenly hating on Clement, people the guy was an ALL STAR this shouldn't even be up for discussion, if you don't believe that look at the numbers

Clement - 10-3, 4.30 ERA, 106 K's, 1.32 WHIP

Wells - 8-5, 4.59 ERA, 58 K's , 1.24 WHIP (His record SUCKS considering he gets more than 7 runs of support per game on average, #1 in the AL)

Wakefield - 8-8, 4.12 ERA, 76 K's, 1.34 WHIP

The way I judge a pitcher is who gives his team the best chance to win Clement is clearly the guy who has done this the most out of any pitcher we have, ala last night.

Yeah, Mike Williams was an All Star in 2003. You have to admit when Clement was out there last night, that you didn't feel comfortable with him.

Wells hasn't lost since May 18th(other than then that stupid ass Baltimore game).

Wells walks zero batters, he is the biggest big game pitcher on our staff. (other than Schilling)

Since June 3rd his ERA is 3.52, Clement's? 6.28. Clements ERA since May 11th has gone up from 3.06 to 4.30. Wells has seen his go from 6.75 to 4.59.

Now, I'm not saying that Clement is a bad pitcher, I agree with statement that when Clement's on he's lights out, but don't you remember when Wells was on his best game? He twirled that one hitter against the Reds.

I like Clement, but feel way more comfortable with Wells on the mound.

i'd go with Clement. he's been great since the start of the season, where Wells stumbled. Wakey has been great for us too. tho, with him its always hit or miss, they are either hitting him all over the park or can't touch him, but i can't complain with how he's been doing either. I'm not a huge Wells fan, never have been, but he's been doing good for us too. but i still pick Clement over all.

Clement's been good all season? He's ERA is about 7.5 this month.

Those are good stats CrespoBlows, they tell a lot. Before he started his slump Clement was the bona-fide Ace of the staff, now I fell a little nervous with him on the mound, he's allowed 7 big flies in his last three starts and was hardly at his potential against the Yankees. I fell way more comfortable with Wells on the mound, especially against the Yankees. In the playoffs I'd start out with him in game one, followed by Clement and Wake. Hopefully Schilling will get back to starting by the end of the year, it's not good that our lowest ERA is over 4.00

If you throw out the Oakland start, Wells' era is a high 3.

plus would help if you throw out david wells' start against the blue jays when he gave of back-2-back-2-back homeruns

I'm throwing out the Oakland start because he was clearly not ready when he came of the DL.

Wells didn't throw all that bad against Toronto after the HR's, he retired 11 in a row after that.

Javier Vazquez was an all-star last year.

I think, without question, it's Wells. I'm not "hating" on Clement, but I do think he has pitched slightly over his head the first half. All of our pitchers have been inconsistant this year, buy the guy who has been most dominant when he is on is Wells. As far as Wake goes, traditionally he has his best stuff in the summer when the air is hot and humid. That knuckler dances a little less in October, so I'm wary of him getting the nod in a Game 1.

It definately isn't Clement. He was lights out in the beginning of the season but now he is losing it. He is from the Cubs don't forget and I wouldn't trust him in a big spot. Wells is a big game pitcher, definately the one out of the five that would be best in a game 7.

Clement did win Game 3 of the NLCS, though.

So you would rather put out Clement in a game 7 with a ring on the line instead of Wells? Keeping in mind Wells is a proven pitcher with a perfect game under his belt and has pitched a bunch of games in the post-seaon with the Yankees and that Clement has yet to really prove himself?

Oh defiantly not, I much prefer to have Wells pitch in Game 7, I was just saying that Clement isn't a choke artist.

Game, set, match.

Curt Schilling is your best starter, and he shouldn't be in the bullpen. He should be starting game one of the playoffs for you. Wells game 2, Clement 3.

Curt Schilling WILL be our best starter. But I get your point.
