I hate this trade since it involves Mueller. Trade Youk if you have to trade anyone.

I love Mueller too but you have to know at some point he will be gone....EVERYONE on the current Red Sox team will be gone. There is a good chance he is gone after this year. Mike Lowell may show up and you may fall in love wtih him cause I got news for you...the guy plays just as hard and is a leader....he was part of the there last World Series team.

You need to ask yourself whats best for the team cause right now...we have one lefty in Mike Myers (Halam doesnt count). We have an average starting rotation. This trade fills all of our holes and gives us the best chance to go on a run and win this thing again. The team we have now could as well...i like our chances with the new players

really everyone on the team wont stay forever? are you kidding me, had not realized that before--yes i realize he was goin to be gone anyway, just saying Id like to see him finish out the season with the Red Sox--I have trust in Theo he knows what he is doing, he has already proven doing so this season with getting Cora, Chad Bradford with his knuckle scraping the mound move, and of course acquiring Tony G. I still cant believe Sox really didnt have to give up much in prospects to get him

I would too...but then we don't get anything for him

Youk is young and hasn't been given a chance to prove himself. Mueller is old and will be gone after this year. you might as well get something for him while you can now.

MAKE THE TRADE- the redsox will be getting a great #2 starter with the best stuff in the NL (according to schilling) and will be getting 1 of the best LH setup guys along with a 3B who averages 25 HR and a .275 avg. a year. hes been doing much better second have of the year.

i think something will happen in the next 2 days

There hasn't been any news of the three team deal on espn or any sports network. Plus there is nothing online on mlb.com or espn.com...im getting worried that this whole thing is just talk and nothing is going to happen

This deal is brilliant, we unload Mueller who won't resign, we get the SP that we need, we get bullpen help.

If there is any truth to this Theo needs to pull the trigger.

I think that Lowell would be just as good a clubhouse guy/fan favorite as Mueller currently is, and there are few players in the league that can match Mueller in that category.

I don't think Min could possibly take on Lowell's contract, and I bet Theo is currently trying to figure out what to do with Lowell if the Sox get him. If henry is open to it, the sox could get Lowell, pay part of his salary and trade him to another team (possibly Min). Otherwise, I think that Theo will try to come up with some creative move that opens a hole either at 2nd or 3rd, and will either try to convert Youk our Mueller, OR move Lowell to 1st base and get rid of Millar. With Pedroia coming up at 2nd it would be foolish to expect anyone to come in there as a long term option.

Overall, I say get Burnett if you believe you can potentially resign him for the long-term future. I know Theo doesn't always care about that, but we would be giving up quite a bit of 'pure value' to get him, by losing the small dollar Arroyo--who is, for his salary, a very effective pitcher.

On the flip side, however, Burnett is pretty damn nasty when he wants to be and the sox could use a lights out pitcher to become their new ace of the future. Burnett is at a good age for that and he and Clement would make a formidable duo for years to come.

Red Sox talking three-way deal with Marlins

With talks between the Orioles and Marlins stalled, the Red Sox are making a push to acquire Burnett, possibly as part of a three-way deal involving the Twins. According to the Globe’s Gordon Edes, the Sox are attempting to interest Florida in a package of players headed by pitcher Bronson Arroyo. League sources confirmed to Edes on Wednesday that “the Sox have discussed a scenario in which they pair their efforts to obtain Twins lefthanded setup man J.C. Romero with their attempt to acquire Burnett. Under that scenario, the Sox would trade third baseman Bill Mueller and prospects to the Twins ... for Romero and righthanded starter Joe Mays. The Sox would then flip Arroyo and Mays to the Marlins for Burnett and Mike Lowell. But that proposal has a couple of obstacles, perhaps insurmountable. While the Marlins like Arroyo, they supposedly would prefer Twins starter Kyle Lohse to Mays, and the Twins aren't interested in moving Lohse. And the Sox are balking for the same reason the Orioles are." They don't want Lowell. According to the Boston Herald, the Sox could send Mueller and Kevin Millar to Minnesota for Romero and Mays. One AL source told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that by Wednesday night, the Red Sox-Twins-Marlins deal looked dead. The report goes on, “If or when the Marlins determine they've exhausted all their possibilities of moving Lowell with Burnett, any number of teams will re-enter the hunt. The Red Sox, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers and Blue Jays all are willing to deal for Burnett. Unlike some of the aforementioned clubs, the Red Sox are willing to take Burnett without signing him to an extension. Burnett is eligible for free agency after this season.”

why wouldnt we try to work out an extension for burnett if we got him?

They were in similar position not long ago

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | July 22, 2005

CHICAGO -- Remember this, as you sift through the trade rumors swirling around the Red Sox: This time last summer, it hadn't occurred to general manager Theo Epstein that he'd soon be in possession of a new shortstop in Orlando Cabrera, a backup outfielder in Dave Roberts, and a new first baseman in Doug Mientkiewicz.

The hot rumor of last summer, that the Sox would land pitcher Matt Clement from the Cubs for Nomar Garciaparra, or in a possible three-team deal with the Florida Marlins, never materialized. That's why Kevin Millar was entitled to be in full mocking mode in the visitors' clubhouse yesterday afternoon when he took note of the covey of reporters circling his locker, clambered on top of a chair, and loudly announced that he and Bill Mueller had been traded to the Minnesota Twins.

His point being, of course, that most trade talk is just that, and the deals that ultimately take place occur with more stealth. Did the Sox discuss a deal with the Twins that would have sent third baseman Mueller to the Twins for lefthanded reliever J.C. Romero, and floated a proposal for a bigger deal that would have sent either Millar or a prospect to the Twins for Romero and starting pitcher Joe Mays?

Yes. Was that deal still in play yesterday? The signals were mixed. The Twins, who were burned in last summer's four-team deal involving Garciaparra -- Minnesota should have come away with a prospect but lost track of that player in the last-minute, complicated permutations -- weren't happy to discover that a third team, the Marlins, were involved in the proposed transaction, with the Sox flipping Mays with Bronson Arroyo to the Marlins for pitcher A.J. Burnett.

For now, anyway, that deal is dormant, and possibly dead. But the Sox still need a lefthanded reliever, and the Twins still need a third baseman, so renewed discussions are just a phone call away.

And with the Orioles still appearing to be in full retreat mode in trade talks for Burnett, the Sox remained confident they could execute a trade for the Florida righthander, who is eligible for free agency after the season. The Marlins don't want to see Burnett walk after the season without getting something in return. They like Arroyo -- a lot, by most accounts. If they can't do a deal that would get them a starter and a reliever, they might prefer the Sox' offer more than the best the Orioles have to offer, a package featuring reliever Jorge Julio.

Epstein has warned that this year's market isn't exactly teeming with hot commodities. We might be talking more about a trading season like the summer of '03, when the Sox added a modestly talented starter in Jeff Suppan and two relievers in Scott Williamson and Scott Sauerbeck, than a summer of '04, when the Garciaparra trade knocked the Nation off its axis.

And yet, you can trace the contours of Epstein's thinking -- that this is a team with obvious needs, and one playing as shakily as it was last summer -- by looking at the moves he has already made and is contemplating. He has strengthened the middle infield with the additions of Alex Cora and Tony Graffanino, picked up Chad Bradford to bolster his bullpen, and brought in reserve outfielder Adam Hyzdu as reinforcement until Gabe Kapler is ready.

Had the Sox been able to execute the three-team deal, Epstein would have landed a top-of-the-rotation starter in Burnett, a swing-and-miss setup man, while absorbing a third baseman, Mike Lowell, who is having a bad year and costs a lot of money but is also Gold Glove-caliber and a dead pull hitter who might find Fenway Park the perfect place to stage a revival.

So while Millar cracked wise, there was optimism in both the Sox clubhouse and front offices that Burnett could be had. There was even some talk that in the end, they might not even need to take Lowell for the deal to get done.

But don't lose sight of the fact there are permutations none of us -- including Epstein -- have yet to think of

There haven't been any new developments to these rumors (that I know of) but there seems to be an overwhelming opinion around baseball analysts that AJ Burnett can be an ace with the proper coaching. His career has been riddled by injuries and he's been a .500 pitcher for a long time (ala Pavano and Clement). The question would be: Which one COULD he become if he came to the AL? I think he's closer to Clement than Pavano for sure because of his strikeout rates.

If AJ can stay healthy, he'd be a fantastic addition to the Red Sox staff. I'm as big a Bronson Arroyo fan as there is out there. I love his no fear attitude, and the fact that he's already dueled the likes of Halladay and Johnson this season and held his own. However, if it takes Bronson to net a guy like Burnett, the Red Sox should do it without hesitation. I haven't heard a single scout predict Bronson as anything higher than a middle of the rotation starter.

JC Romero is another guy this team needs to keep pushing the Twins to move. A lefty who throws hard and gets a lot of strikeouts is rare and very valuable. Without Embree on the staff and with Halama struggling, the team still could use another lefty arm.

One VERY good point to keep in mind is that the biggest trades made last year were trades that were really never brought up in rumors. I never heard the names Dave Roberts, Orlando Cabrera, or Doug Mientkiewicz' names linked to the Red Sox before the deals went down. Prepare to be surprised

UPDATE ON THE TRADE......

There are a few problems with the teams involved on a personal level. The Minnesota Twins are a little annoyed they get burned in the deal last year and Florida is still annoyed about the Kevin Millar situation. On the other hand Minnesota is aware they need to make a move. Florida has the possibility of staying with what they have. There is still a good chance the Red Sox make a straight up trade with Minnesota.....

Florida is extremely high on Bronson Arroyo based on the fact he is cheap and signed on through this year. I think Bronson Arroyo would be a better pitcher in Florida since the field is more forgiving but at the same time AJ Burnett would benefit from being at Fenway with Jason Varitek and an offense that can score him some runs (ala Matt Clement with a 95 MPH fastball).

The potential issue with the teams is the only news from yesturday...nothing new has developed and there is a chance the deal could be dead. It will be interesting to see if Florida gives in with time winding down but you can expect Theo Epstein to at least aquire a left handed reliever

alvarez is pretty good tho...if they traded him they would be losing one of their big prospects. If they trade hanley then they gonna have no one
