All we need is a closer till foulke gets back. Yes foulke I think we should give him another chance.

If we have any hope this year we need him back and doing well.

Schilling and Foulke were our top pitchers last year...we need them healthy and in place

The one thing that sticks out for me is this. With all the talk recently about Mueller not able to play second because of his knees, and playing Youk a little more to keep Mueller's knees fresh, and coming off of knee surgery earlier this year and last, why in the hell would they trade him to an artificial surface - especially the Metrodome???

If this happens I'll be more pissed for Mueller than anything else. Though I guess Mueller could walk away from the Twins after this season (if he can still walk)..

The Sox wouldn't get ride of him unless you killed Theo, and all the other guys incharge of that stuff. He is one of the best defensive guys we have, he can actully hit, and he knows how to run the bases!

we do in the form of kevin youkilis.

yes, and i love the youk, but christ, Muellers bat is important. I say dump either Bellhorn or Millar (even though i do like him....he's great for the team mentally wise)

His defense is priceless....and the call GAYROD a better thirdbase man.....tisk tisk Yankee fans

Mueller is far from a perfect third baseman. He often gets beat by ground balls down the line, which probably has more to do with positioning yet he also has an occasional habit of backing up on ground balls. Still he has proven to be a clutch hitter, a yankee killer, especially against Rivera, and his switch hitting is an asset. I don't think he would be too expensive to keep next year, but I think the bigger factor is Youk, and whether or not he can play first base. If not, it may be up to Mueller to decide if he wants to go to second base. If he doesn't want to play second, it's always better to get someone for him rather than just let him walk.

I'm gonna say it for the last time. Tito said Billy will not be playing 2B anymore due to the knee injuries in his past.

dude they already got somebody in the form of Tony G to cover 2nd base so Mueller doesnt have to worry about it at all.

I'm talking about next year. Will Tony G come cheaper than Mueller next year? Will Theo want to pay them both when he already has Youk?

not to mention club dynamics.

Really? And by club dynamics you mean refusing to play seond base for MOST LIKELY NO MORE THAN ONE INNING, and by doing so decreasing your teams chance to win.

Personally I don't mind this trade because I don't see the Sox re-signing him at the end of the year.

Mueller will probably want a 3 year deal, he's a third baseman, getting on in age, with bad knees, that is not a combination that I want on my team for the next three years.

We have a perfectly fine replacement in Youks and our bullpen definitly needs the help, I think the trade is a good idea. I trust in Theo and his moves. And anyone who tries to argue that the Kim deal was a bust should be reminded, that Kim was a HUGE part in getting the Sox into the playoffs in 2003, ending the whole "who's the closer?" issue.

2nd base next spring I see Alex Cora goin on to a new team with Tony G battling out for the starting second baseman nod against Pedroia/Ramirez. Sizzlin, it is more than likely youk will get the starter position of 3rd base

Absolutely. So trading Mueller is not only possible, but likely.

Funny though how this rumor of sending him to a "turf" team came out right after the NY game and this issue of Mueller not wanting to play 2B because of his knees. I don't think the FO tolerates this sort of stuff and Billy may have already punched his ticket out of here.

reading about what you guys said it might be the right thing to do but Billy Mueller plays his heart out every game and Youk, as good as he is, isn't a full timer just yet. Adding a decent pitcher is great, but sending Millar to the Astros is a better idea than dumping Mueller.

One problem with that, the Astros would be retarded to take Millar, I say tade Mueller and get something for him before we lose him in the off season.

That trade would suck, Mueller is probably our clutchest hitter and Romero is on steroids. The Bullpen will get better, and if it doesnt just trade Millar for help. Also, why cant Youk play second, i remember he said he was willing to, so he should.

I think that the only reason that trades like this are discussed is because the farm system is still in shock from the Harrington/Duquette regime. Like Nomar last year and possibly Millar or Mueller this year, Theo is looking to find help without mortgaging the future. In a few years once we've developed more prospects and have more abundance in our farm system, we won't mind trading some off in deals. But for now, it's vital that we start developing our own guys that we can bring up to the major league level because that's going to make this team even more flexible financially. I think we have some of the best executives in baseball and in a few years I suspect that we'll be able to drastically reduce payroll without sacrificing wins because we'll have those prospects.

It would hurt to see Mueller go, but we probably only have him for a few more months anyways.

Regarding Youk at second, I think it's a bad idea because of the importance of the 2B in the double play which if you think about it is probably the single hardest play to execute in baseball since you have to catch a throw, tag the base, turn 180 degrees while avoiding a 200lb guy running at full speed trying to take out your legs and then deliver an accurate throw to first all within a second. For Youk to start working on that right now would be too much of a liability to the team and he risks injuring himself.

They just signed Tony G, who is more than enough to handle play second base. Tony G is even able to play every outfield and infield position there is. Who knows, I think Tony G could become the new second baseman for 2005 is he does exceptionally well during time Bellhorn is on the DL. Plus they have backup Alex Cora. I think with this signing and now talks between Minnesota to get the strong lefty reliever JC Romero with a nice 2.31 ERA, they want a third baseman in return, Youk is best option for us to trade off since he hasnt been able to contribute as much as mueller thus far. This is so far lookin like Mueller's last season anyway, which he should end with the Sox in October. So I wouldnt mind seeing at all, Tony G taking over 3rd next season if he does make an impact and able to resign. Off the subject, but when he was taking off his helmet at bat, god he looks like he could be Nomar's brother, huh?

Trading Youk would make no sense at all. Youk is the future at 3B, and since Billy is getting up there in age I'd feel better trading him. I don't think Theo would even consider trading Youk because we never know when Billy is gonna break down. Trading Youk would instantly make atleast half on RSN turn on Theo ... no matter what we got in return.

Right now the speculative three-way deal has us giving up...

Bill Mueller, Bronson Arroyo, and second-tier prospects for...

A.J. Burnett, J.C. Romero, and Mike Lowell

The problem is the sox don't want lowell, and neither do the twins
