Sox pick up Chad Bradford for Payton

I hope this hasn't been discussed yet. I just read that we have traded Jay Payton for submarine A's right hander, Chad Bradford who has pitched for four playoff teams and has a career 21-15 mark with a 3.47 ERA in 294 games.

-Scott Cassidy sent back down to AAA Pawtucket

-Schilling (obviously) activated off of DL

-Kevin Youkilis optioned to AAA Pawtucket making room for Bradford

-Schilling also expected to close tonight's game vs. New York, according to WEEI

Talk of this deal is all over the Rumor section in a few threads. Perhaps this can be merged?

 

Anyway, hopefully Bradford can come in and get the tough lefties out (Jeter, ARod, Sheffield) and we can leave the lefties to Myers (Giambi, Matsui).

 

That and Timlin/Schilling closing it out-- should be an improved bullpen.

Should be, remember Bradford is fresh off the DL so god only knows how he will perform. We still need to see how Schilling reacts to being the closer . Should be, could be, definitly not a sure thing.

I liked what I saw from Bradford last night....even though he walked A-Rod his velocity is where it should be. The command will come around and he made Sheffield look stupid at the plate. Having a lefty specialist and righty specialist will be nice to have....we just need to replace Embree so Timlin can come into games without runners always on base.

As long as Bradford can stay healthy he should be fine. For his first outing of the season, that wasn't catastrophic. The command should come with some regular work.

 

The big question mark from my end is his health though. 2 back surguries? Ouch. Just hope he can hold up for the next half season. If he can get the righties and Myers can get the lefties that should give us a potent duo late in games-- now all we need is a closer.
