Arroyo vs. Mussina

Wells vs. Wang

Clement vs. Johnson

Wakefield vs. Pavano

Schilling and Bradford will join the Red Sox for the series.

ill try not to be bias:

arroyo vs mussina- edge: sox (mussina has been everything but spectacular, and arroyo is inconsistent, both are rested, so this could be the better offense and bullpen (like schillingisthenatural said schilling and bradford will be in the pen for this) wins.

wells vs wang- edge: sox (only if wells pitches to his capabilities, wang is a control pitcher)

clement vs johnson- edge: yanks (beat us twice this season, clement will have to give up two runs or less, but again rj has been very inconsistent this yea, so this too could be up in the air)

wakefield vs pavanoverated edge: sox (yanks always have trouble with wake)

i say we win 3/4 or a split, which I'd be very content with the way we played just before the break

Did you see this confirmed somewhere or are you guessing?

Arroyo vs Mussina-- advantage Yankees

Wells vs Wang-- advantage Red Sox

Clement vs Johnson -- advantage Yankees

Wakefield vs Pavano -- advantage Red Sox

I don't have a good feeling about this series right now. Wells could very easily get hammered, the Red Sox don't hit rookie pitchers well, and Wakefield gave up 4 runs his last time out. Johnson vs Clement and Arroyo vs Mussina should be Yankee wins, but I can easily see us drop 3 of 4 or even all 4 in this series. We need the pitchers to step it up in Fenway.

ok youre talking about everybody confident about the sox, while youre doing the exact opposite posting as if the sox will lose every game upcoming they have. I know this has been said a lot, but i think need a lil refreshing: sox were down 3 games in the 7 game playoff series. game 3 was a domination said and done by the yanks of 19 - 8. The next 4 games, everybody had on their mind the sox would falter cuz its something that never has been done before. and they did it in 4 straight games, couple lasting 5, 6 hours. i know its not the same team last year, but they have the weapons to do it and plus they get to be home for this. im not on a high horse, i see sox at least splitting the series

actually second game randy johnson pitched against the sox, our boys had won 8-5. that was the game with the sheffield incident, was at that game, best game i have ever been to at fenway.

I'm just not as confident as you. These guys were flat in Baltimore and New York's a better team. Sure, the Sox play better at home, but the Yankees are going to come to play and play hard. The Red Sox team has had this ******** attitude where they can be laid back because they won it last year or think the team can't improve if they're in first place. If they come out flat they could very easily look very very bad in this series. A split I can see, IF Wake dominates and the Sox can jump all over Wang early... but 3 / 4 is pushing it.

I'm still waiting to see that fire from these guys where they feel like they HAVE to win. They always play hard when their backs are against the wall (like last August or last October) but they haven't had that attitude last year.

There was a HUGE difference between the 2004 team and the 2005 team: Schilling and Martinez. Last year this team had 2 aces. Two guys who could match up with any other ace in baseball. This year, without Schilling and without Martinez, they have NOBODY. Clement is not Randy Johnson, and when these guys go head to head the Yankees have the edge.

Wanna know what the difference will be in this series.....the BULLPEN

All these pitchers can pitch and the team should fight it out but the bullpen for the teams will decide who gets the edge because you know a few of these will come down to the wire. Good chance nobody gets blown out...these should all be close.

Yanks have new pitchers in the bullpen and the Red Sox should have two new guys....I have to say though....

I wish Schilling was pitching in game 3 vs. Johnson

did you even notice i had pointed that out, that its not the same team from last season. i am glad clement will be pitching vs johnson in game 3, they still got the weapons to bring it to the yankees, a 'la 17-1 defeat in yankee stadium.

for those thinking this is a do or die series...dream on

we have a couple more series against them plus the rest of the year. still lots of baseball to play so don't get all pissy. this month will define what the team will look like from here out and fill holes....once that happens then they need to focus and REALLY come together. it would be nice if it could start now!

I rarely disagree with anything you say elsrbueno cause we think alike....but I might have to here haha.

Clement was an all star at the half way point and has really come into his own from what I see. Finally living up to the potential where I think Johnson is hitting a wall. Obviously Johnson can have good games like anyone but at his age and being away from the area he enjoyed (Arizona)...its taking its toll and he is no longer the ace I once envisioned. Johnson does not take in the rivalry either which gives him no sense of urgency or drive to be amazing and shut down the Yanks nemesis. The fact I think Clement might have a close edge is big considering.....when Schill is healthy and good to go....Yanks might find Johnson is not the answer to matchup our ace.

I appreciate that you disagree with me for once-- it's refreshing.

There's just something about Clement... He just seems too good to be true right now. He's 10-2, established himself as the ace of the staff at 30, despite being very mediocre and inconsistent BEFORE this season. It's almost like I expect him to relapse. One thing to keep in mind: He WAS 2-5 with a 5.09 ERA after the break last year. Yes, I understand he's got a better catcher and better team behind him... I just can't accept that he's THIS good-- yet.

I also have this fear that's been built up inside me, probably from a lifetime of failure, that the Red Sox are GOING to fail. It's what they do. Yes, last year was tremendous and they finally didn't fail-- but old habits die hard.

Clement's numbers (1-0, 1.74 ERA vs Yankees this year, 5-1, 3.67 ERA @ Fenway) point to a good start from him on Saturday (hey, there's hope for me yet!)

you have really been disappointing me latelys elsrbueno with all of your negative posts...what kind of sox fan are you?

Like I said, the kind of Sox fan who's had to deal with a lifetime of dissapointment. It's hard to EXPECT the Sox to win. Like I said, old habits die hard.

That having been said, my negativity has merit. The Red Sox just got out of losing 3 of 4 to the Orioles (in which they looked FLAT) and come out of the break playing a hot Yankees team.

I'm probably one of the FEW fans who actually listens to 90% of the games on the RADIO (most of you kids have TV, but that's for the rich) so trust me, I'm really dedicated.

I just have a bad feeling about the upcoming Yankee series. Would I love to be wrong? Absolutely.

Yes or No...Playing the Yankees brings out the best in us?

For the most part, yes. But doesn't that also bring out the best in the Yankees? (playing us)

exactly so, coming into the may series of sox vs yanks, the yanks were riding high just coming off of winning 15 out of their last 17 games. then came the faceoff in yankee stadium, sox outscored them 30-9 and out hit them 52-21. it couldve have been a 3 game sweep if not for dale svelum's bad decisions in the 6th inning and alan embree giving up back to back homeruns, tallying 5 runs and handing them the win.

Well that's a good point and I hope that you're right. I just get very nervous when the Yankees come to town.

i dont think 17-1 is bringing out anything good....

the record over the past 5 years with the Sox and Yanks head to head is almost .500

....most likely it will be the same this year...these teams really beat up on each other. Even last year we were 7-1 against them in the beginning but they came back to even it up.

17-1 victory counts as 1 win. Just like the 19-8 victory meant 1 win for the Yanks.

I have to admit though....it was fun piling in all those hits in the 17-1 game.

Kerrigan goes to work for Yankees?

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that former Red Sox manager and pitching coach Joe Kerrigan will soon be working for the Yankees. Yankees GM Brian Cashman reportedly contacted Kerrigan, who served as the Phillies' pitching coach last season, last week. ... More evidence that the Yankees may stand pat at the trade deadline: "We have to get back to doing what made the Yankees so good for such a long period beginning in the '90s," Cashman said, according to an ESPN.com column by Peter Gammons. "We're in the position we're in because we stopped developing our own young players. We can point to what's happened since we brought up Robinson Cano and Chien Wang." Red Sox GM Theo Epstein on Cashman's comments: "I always had a great deal of respect for Brian," he said. "But I have more now than ever. Here he is without a contract, and he's putting the long-term good of the New York Yankees ahead of his own job security." Neither Epstein nor Cashman have deals beyond this season.

hahhah thats just dandy, next year he will prly be their pitching coach since mel said this is his last year and next year even WE can run on the yankees, he will be teaching every last one of his pitchers to pitch out of the stretch each and every time

Well this series could set the pace for the 2nd half. And if they Yanks sweep, they will be in first and rolling. That is an extreme, but it is something to consider.

Neither Pavano or Wang will pitch in this series... Wang was just placed on the DL today and Pavano is still a few weeks away.

So the matchups are now...

Mussina vs. Arroyo

Redding vs. Wells

Johnson vs. Clement

May vs. Wakefield
