July 12, 2005 -- DETROIT - The Yankees and Red Sox are teammates for one day in tonight's All-Star Game at Comerica Park. Come Thursday in Boston that will all change.

The Yankees will not stand for any more attacks on Alex Rodriguez from the Red Sox like last July when Jason Varitek shoved his glove in the superstar's face, the Shove seen 'round the world.

The days of the Red Sox challenging Rodriguez physically or verbally, like they did throughout spring training when they repeatedly chirped that Rodriguez was not a "true Yankee" are done.

The Yankees finally have A-Rod's back at Fenway and everywhere else.

"We're going to bring our gold, our jewel in there, which is A-Rod," Gary Sheffield told me yesterday during the American League All-Star interview session.

"We're going to see how the chips fall this time. That's our man and we know he's our man.

"We're going to look out for him when he's in a situation like that."

I asked Sheffield exactly what he meant by that statement.

"When he's in a hostile environment, we've got to make sure he's comfortable because it helps our team," Sheffield answered.

And if something like the Varitek incident happens again?

"That's why I say it's going to be different," Sheffield said, looking me straight in the eye.

"We're going to make sure that Alex is taken care of."

If all that sounds like fighting words, so be it. The Yankees have come together as a team this crazy first half of a season in many ways.

After last October's spectacular choke job to Boston, there is payback coming the Red Sox's way as far as the Yankees are concerned and it starts Thursday with the Yankees protecting their superstar - Rodriguez - any way they have to at Fenway.

If you are a Yankee fan, these are the words you've been waiting to hear since Rodriguez joined the club. Rodriguez is appreciative of the backup.

"We've been through a lot together, a lot of guys don't know half the stuff we've been through as a team," he said, offering a rare view inside the Yankees' closed world.

"To be in the situation we are right now, we are very fortunate," Rodriguez added. "Our worst times are behind us."

The Yankees trail the first-place Red Sox by only two games in the loss column. A-Rod was quick to credit teammates, especially Jason Giambi, in helping to lift the fortunes of the club.

The Yankees have been humbled by the bad times they've been through and also say they have grown as a team from those difficult days.

Noted Rodriguez, "Everybody on this team has been attacked from every angle. I think we've become a closer team. Now we are united. We talk amongst each other much better than last year. I think this is as tight this team has been - one through 25 - since I've been here."

Even the Red Sox have noticed a change. "Alex is one of the top three players in the game," Johnny Damon said.

"He's finding his niche in New York now."

A-Rod admitted it has taken time for him to get to know his teammates and for his teammates to get to know him.

"It's something that you can't accelerate what you try to do," he explained.

"The trials and tribulations this team has gone through has helped us come together."

Tonight A-Rod will be batting second, right behind Damon, in front of Red Sox sluggers David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez.

He is surrounded by Red Sox.

Asked what he thought about such a lineup, A-Rod paused for a few seconds before saying, "It's kind of ironic that a Red Sox is protecting me. It's kind of weird."

The truth is that for the first time in his Pinstriped career, Alex Rodriguez can go into the lion's den that is Fenway Park and know in his heart that he is being protected by his Yankee teammates.

As Sheffield promised, "It's going to be different."

Well remember last year Sheffield called the Red Sox nothing but pretenders....we all remember what ended up happening!! Atta boy Sheff boy continue talking trash and making yourself look dumber than a short bus student.

I like this side to the Yanks, that is the fire that Sheff brings. You guys may call him an ******* but he is just intense. I think that the team is now really a team. I can't wait to get these games started! It gives a different feeling to the season, as a Yankee fan and a proud member of the evil empire it gives you a little bit of confidence. This doesn't mean that they will go in there and dominate, but the possibility is WIDE open. This might backfire, but it may not. This is just like Cowboy up, ( without being moronic) and the " Idiots".

A-Rod no longer cursed by Red Sox

BY SAM BORDEN

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

DEARBORN, Mich. - It seems like the animosity between Alex Rodriguez and the Red Sox has dissipated.

Well, most of it, anyway.

Boston slugger David Ortiz said yesterday that he had a good conversation with A-Rod during All-Star Game festivities, and Rodriguez nodded when asked about the chat.

From his table on one wall of the Ritz-Carlton conference room, A-Rod quickly scanned the opposite wall, where the Boston players were sitting, and said he was "cool" with Ortiz, Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez.

Of course, he didn't mention Jason Varitek, which could have been just a mistake or could have been a knowing omission - after all, Varitek and A-Rod came to blows last summer at Fenway Park, ratcheting up the rivalry between the Yanks and Sox even more. Ortiz, who stood out yesterday with a baby blue-and-white striped golf shirt and matching baby blue hat, said, "Things happen. It's okay now," when asked about A-Rod.

He also said Rodriguez complimented his massive aviator-style Gucci sunglasses.

"He said he liked my glasses and I said, 'Don't hate the player - hate the game!' " Ortiz said with a cackle.

Just a stupid homer article for the Post probably the result of a few softball interview questions looking to stir up Sheff. Much more likely to sell papers than actually fire up the Yankees as a unit.

Oh God. I don't like all this buddy buddy.

LOL. I love this it shows that they ( players) only think of it as a game. Ortiz has always been one of my favorite Red Sox player. I think that the team has come together, just like the Sox came together last year. Does this mean success no, but it is cool.

Notice Varitek wasn't one of the list of people A-Rod is cool with. If my memory serves me right Sheffoids got plunked by Petey last year in that game with Jeter and the diving catch and didn't do jack s*** about it. Sheffield is all bark and no bite.

Ok you f***ing moron, till this point I have been respectful to almost everyone on this board. You have it coming, you are one of those kids that probably hopped on the Red Sox bandwagon after 2004. You know jack s*** about the game, never mind the rivalry. All you f***ing talk about is how much you hate the Yankees ( what a mother f***ing surprise, join the damn club). I know this is a Red Sox board and I haven't complained about all the Yankee suck s***, but I wanted some intelligent insight into the game and the whole Yankees/Red Sox brouhaha. If I wanted to have an eight year old talk s*** all day long, I would have gone to the YES boards. If you have nothing smart to say to me, I advice you keep your mouth shut. Oh yes I don't know anything, coming from the person who's all thirty-something post have been about the how the Yankees suck, steroids, and steroids. I think that about covers it. Grow up.

Since when are the Yankees the good guys?

Since when is Sheffield talking s*** a "new dynamic?"

I've said 100 times that the Yankees are a good team this year and will make for a great race down the stretch. Obviously, these two teams match up well as there is only 1 game difference head to head this season.

I think all the pressure is still on the Yankees. They've got the talent, they're coming at us with their best guys (Johnson, Mussina) while we have to go with Bronson Arroyo and David Wells the first two games. The Yankees definately have the advantage the first two, while with Clement and Wake we should have the upper hand in the last two.

When does Pavano come back? Will we see him this weekend?
