The Globe's Gordon Edes reported Friday that the Red Sox will trade Jay Payton - who was designated for assignment Thursday -- to the A's for veteran reliever Chad Bradford, a submarining righthander who has been on the disabled list since March 22 after a second back surgery. Edes continues: "Bradford, who is currently on rehab assignment, is expected to come off the DL after the All-Star break, which is why the announcement of the trade is pending -- the A's will need to clear a roster spot first. But in the first step toward that deal, the Sox yesterday designated Payton for assignment and called up Rule 5 outfielder Adam Stern from Triple A Pawtucket. Bradford's health makes him a bit of a risk, but when healthy, the 30-year-old seven-year veteran has been an effective setup man." The 6-foot-5 Bradford appeared in 68, 72, and 75 games for the A's in the last three seasons. Bradford's best season came in 2003, when he went 7-4 in 72 games with a 3.04 ERA. Last year, he was 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA in 68 games. The Providence Journal's Sean McAdam writes that Bradford's "sinking fastball generates lots of ground balls, and the Sox believe he can help them in the sixth and seventh innings."

With Payton going to Oakland....Kotsay must be going to the Yankees??

There are several teams interested in Kotsay besides NYY. Kielty or Byrnes may also go.

Posted

On this note, Kotsay signed an extension with the A's through 2008 this weekend. This means that he's going nowhere, and makes for a pretty crowded Oakland outfield if this deal goes down.

Rumers are also that Theo's trying to get a third team involved to send Payton to a team where he would play everyday.

If Payton ends up in Oakland, they'll have to make room for him in the lineup or deal with his unhappiness--unless of course they spin him off to a third team.

Here some interesting notes....

-Houston may be interested in dealing Chad Qualls for Kevin Millar and sticking Berkman back in the outfield.

-The Mets may also have interest in Millar but also may have interest in Shoppach (makes sense considering Piazza's age).

-Jay Payton could fit into the outfield in Houston (leave Berkman at 1st).

Here is an idea:

-Red Sox Kevin Millar + Kelly Shoppach to Mets for Braden Looper

-Red Sox Jay Payton to Oakland for Chad Bradford

-Oakland Jay Payton to Houston for Chad Qualls (young reliever)

-Red Sox Wade Miller + Braden Looper to Florida for AJ Burnett

Just a thought

An interesting thought. I'd love to get my hands on a guy like Burnett. On that same token though, I'd rather have Qualls than Bradford if Payton could be exchanged for either one. While Bradford obviously has more experience, I'd love to add a young arm like Qualls especially with the primary bullpen folks (Timlin, Embree, Myers) not getting any younger-- not to mention Curt Schilling's age (if he ends up sticking to the relief role beyond 2005).

none of those make any sense, looper is not a dominant closer. his era is above 4. why would you trade away your potential future catcher for looper, especially when the mets weakest point is their pen.

payton for bradford is rumored, i would love to have bradford, some good knuckle grinding relief

i haven't heard much about qualls so i won't mention that

the last one is just silly. what would florida do with looper? he's "ok" at best. they are still in the run and downgrading a pitcher isn't exactly what they want to do imo. tj is doing fine in fl,i doubt they would really be looking for another closer.

Chad Bradford and possibly Schilling brings relief for the bullpen come thursday

Bradford should be in Sox 'pen for Yankee series

The Globe's Gordon Edes reported Wednesday that "Bradford should become a member of the Red Sox in time to pitch in the series against the Yankees, which begins (Thursday) in Boston. Bradford, the submarining reliever who has been on rehab assignment after undergoing back surgery in March, likely will fill the seventh inning role previously occupied by Matt Mantei before he was lost for the season with an ankle injury. The Sox gave up disgruntled outfielder Jay Payton for Bradford, with the deal expected to be finalized no later than (Thursday)." The 6-foot-5 Bradford appeared in 68, 72, and 75 games for the A's in the last three seasons. Bradford's best season came in 2003, when he went 7-4 in 72 games with a 3.04 ERA. Last year, he was 5-6 with a 4.42 ERA in 68 games. This whole thing was just an idea for AJ Burnett. Have you seen all the trade rumors? Maybe not Miller or Looper (I'm just playing with ideas) but Arroyo's name has come up again.

I have never heard of the guy, is he any good?

I'll bet when you seem him pitch you'll recognize him. His knuckles literally scrape the dirt when he pitches.

As for if he's good or not, he gets righties out very well, but struggles against lefties. He'll be better than Mantei.

I still am kinda sketchy about this. Reminds me way too much of BK Kim. Hopefully he will prove me wrong and blow us all away.

he's very much unlike kim. kim was still very young when he joined the sox. the tender age of 24 (or very close to it). he threw in the high 90's (95-99). bradford has been in the league for quite some time now. been through with the white sox and the a's. this would be his second back surg. he's not going to throw gas by people, he throws in the mid to low 80's. he relies on being "deceptive" and relies on ground balls for outs. with ole, bellhorn, renteria and youk/mueller he should be ok as a sox. it'll be fun, he was nasty in every one of his postseason relief appearances i've seen.

At this point he doesn't really have to do much to blow me away. He seems like the type of guy whose arm angle will confuse enough hitters to get outs and if he can keep his sinker in the bottom half of the strike zone then he'll be tough to make solid contact off of. Getting two relief pitchers (with Schilling) ought to really help out all around since the starters won't feel like they need to make it through the seventh and Timlin won't have to pitch every game.

Red Sox ace activated off DL

Curt Schilling was activated Wednesday after spending 2 1/2 months on the disabled list, and will be in the bullpen when the Boston Red Sox begin the second half of the season Thursday night against the New York Yankees. Schilling is expected to work in relief until he's ready to pitch long enough to reclaim his spot in the rotation after going on the disabled list April 29 with a bone bruise in his right ankle. "I'm excited, I'm nervous,'' Schilling said backstage Wednesday night at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. "We come out of the gate with the New York Yankees and it's going to get hot fast. It's a World Series atmosphere in July. I feel good, I'm as ready as I can be.''

The Red Sox on Thursday were also expected to activate reliever Chad Bradford, acquired Wednesday from Oakland for outfielder Jay Payton after Bradford spent the entire season on the disabled list. To make room on the roster, they optioned third baseman Kevin Youkilis to Triple-A Pawtucket and outrighted pitcher Scott Cassidy to Pawtucket. Schilling made five rehabilitation appearances with Pawtucket, the last three as a reliever after he struggled in his second outing as a starter. Boston needs help in its bullpen where Keith Foulke, Alan Embree, Matt Mantei and John Halama all have ERAs over 6.00. Foulke and Mantei are on the disabled list. Schilling pitched on consecutive nights last Saturday and Sunday for Pawtucket at Syracuse. He worked one scoreless inning in each game -- throwing seven pitches in a perfect inning then 16 when he faced four batters, allowing one hit.

"I want to be in the big leagues pitching, and I'm anxious to get back,'' Schilling said after Sunday's appearance. "I felt good today. I felt stronger than I did yesterday, which is good.'' He had surgery during the offseason to repair a tendon in his right ankle and started this season on the disabled list. He went 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA before bruising that ankle on April 23 and going on the disabled list April 29, retroactive to April 24. In his relief appearances with Pawtucket, he had a 3.00 ERA :) with four strikeouts and no walks in three innings. In his two starts for Pawtucket, he was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA. Youkilis hit .286 with one homer and nine RBI in 31 games. Cassidy, called up from Pawtucket last week, gave up three runs on four hits in one relief outing.

Yea, exactly like what's his name did.....oh, right Byung Hyung Kim. Arm angle isn't quite enough. ;)

this guy can't be any worse than BK Kim........can he?

*knock on wood*

I hate to even bring this up, but it seems like Kim was BETTER than Bradford in their pre-Red Sox careers. Kim was a dominant closer turned starter (then turned back to closer by us). Bradford is a situational right hander out of the bullpen.

Yeah this guy is a alot like Mike Myers. He can really go after RHB, however, he kinda sucks against LHB. We now have two situational relief pitchers for the tough outs along with Schilling and Timlin....all the bullpen needs is a 'healthy back to form' Keith Foulke and a hard throwing lefty with good movement (replacement for Embree).

Here are some fun facts for the coming series....

Jeter, Sheffield, and A-Rod have a career (.192 BA) against Chad Bradford

Jeter, Sheffield, and A-Rod have a career (.185 BA) against Curt Schilling

.....they should help
