Wow, what a shocker. The AL wins the All-Star Game again.

Jeter is if not the best baseball player in the game today.

I'm a big Yankee fan and all but I don't think Jeter is the best player in the game - He's good but he's certainly not the best.

i will stand by this until the day i die. he is alreaday a hall of famer. just because he doesn't hit a lot of homeruns during the regular season people think he's overated. people are too homerun happy these days. Jeter is a class act never says a bad thing about his teamates or other teams or players. iSome of the plays he makes i've never seen tejada, edgar, or even A-rod when he was a SS make plays like that. ya know I'm gonna to stop trying to talk to you guys about this because ya know your Red Sox fans and according to you baseball begins and ends with the Sox. Just hope you enjoy 1st place while it lasts.

**Recovers after Youk's comments**

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but when I read that ^ all I read is Yankee baisedness. This is by no means me saying that Derek Jeter is not a good player, I'm not saying this at all, I know hes a top 5 SS in the League today but ALREADY A HALL OF FAMER....... HOW????? :dunno:

I mean besides being on the most productive franchise in sports and being in the media capital of the world, what has he done to be a hall of famer??? I mean nice defensive plays...good average...alright power...he's clutch, yeah but I mean if it wasn't for him being in New York...is he even an All-Star during one of his better years??? :dunno:

Unfortunately, Manny Goes Boom, I think Jeter is already a Hall of Famer -- he may not be so deserving of it, but it's the truth. I think Jeter is in the first wave of Shortstops that could produce offensively. Before Ripken, shortstops couldn't really hit. He won't quite be judged on the offensive numbers of the shortstops before him, but he won't be compared to the numbers of guys like A-Rod, Tejada, and other good offensive Shortstops (yes, I consider A-Rod a SS, still) -- he'll fall somewhere in between.

Plus, it's impossible to overlook his 'great defensive plays' which have been greatly over exaggerated. Like Jeter's diving play into the stands when he had room to stop or slide -- how often do you see David Wright's diving catch into the stands? And it was a FAR better play than Jeter's.

I agree. I, and most Red Sox fans, tend to think of Jeter as overrated. Believe me, he is. Yankee fans go to ridiculous lengths to hump their favorite shortstop; some even proclaim him the best player in baseball. (And let it be noted that, even if it may have been used incorrectly, that was the first usage of a colon in a sentence in Talksox history). His career stats tell the tale:

With a career average nearing .315, it's almost a given that he'll eventually get into the hall provided he keeps it up, especially with the pressure that would be coming out of New York. He may not, however, be a first ballot hall of famer. That distinction should be reserved for the best of the best, players who without a doubt represent the epitome of baseball awesomeness, of which there were only a few playing in last night's game.

edit: the formatting seems to be royally effed in that code snippet, but you get the point.

I've got to say Jeter's a great player, but he is WAY overrated. It comes with the territory of playing in New York. Someone who gets the job done is GREAT, someone who doesn't is AWFUL. Everything gets overplayed.

If Derek Jeter was drafted by, and played his career for, say the Milwaukee Brewers, would anybody consider him for the hall of fame? Probably not. Would he be voted in by the fans to an All Star game? Nope. Derek Jeter is one of the top 10 shortstops in the game today, and I have said before and will say again that I respect his winning attitude and the way he plays the game. That's not the point. My point is that BECAUSE he plays for the New York Yankees, everything he does is overrated.

Now before you jump all over me, take a look at some other guys who have the exact same thing happening: Johnny Damon? He's the same player he was in Oakland and Kansas City, but now that he plays in a big baseball market, all of a sudden the media loves him and has gone so far as to refer to him as "the best leadoff hitter in the game." If he was putting up the same numbers in KC, they'd casually mention: "oh by the way, Johnny Damon is second in the league in hitting."

Miguel Tejada's profile TOOK OFF when he left Oakland to go to Baltimore. Peter Gammons went so far as to label him one of (if not the) best player in the game. (Before you attack me, I am just repeating what Peter Gammons said, so don't yell at me if you disagree)

The list goes on and on. Tino Martinez? An average first baseman who was immortalized by some key hits in a Yankee uniform. Bill Buckner? A pretty good player with a decent career who was demonized because he missed the wrong groundball.

Everything gets overplayed in the big northeast markets. If Derek Jeter patrolled shortstop for one of those smaller markets, nobody would be talking about him.
