95 MPH Throwing Relief Pitcher Picks Sox over Reds, Blue Jays and Dodgers

37-year-old Japanese league (Yokohama Bay Stars) pitcher Denny Tomori agrees to a one-year deal with the Red Sox (amount undisclosed and changes if he makes the cut in spring training). He chose the Red Sox because Theo called him personally and told him that the Red Sox needed him. Tomori and his agent conducted an open house practice session Dec. 11 in Anaheim and 22 teams sent scouts. The Sox sent three scouts there to check him out at the time.

Few innings pitched, but a decent k/9 ration.

The initial post is from BDD.com, but I'm not sure what the terms of the signing are.

On a side note, Hideo Nomo signed a minor league contract with the D-Rays.

Can't hurt to add another arm, epecially one that throws 95 (if that's true)

Does anyone have a real source on this?

Either way, does anyone have any more information on this guy?

In my mind, the Red Sox bullpen is their greatest weakness.... is this guy the answer?

That was a good move for them. If he regains his past glory, they could become competitve.

Eerily reminds me of another Asain side arm reliver bye the name of Mr. Kim. Never heard of the guy but I'll wait untill I see him in MLB action untill I make a judgement.

don't expect much from this, he's 37 and his numbers are in the japan leagues. imo he's going to be bullpen backup and nothing more.

exactly. i wont trust any stats in other leagues or anything like that. my initial thought is that if hes bad, its not like they paid a lot of money and if hes good we didnt pay a lot of money. win win for the sox. good move theo.

IMO its a good pickup we got him from the money we got back from the mets for doug

The Sox sent cash considerations and Doug to the Mets.

Tomori is a great signing. I can't see us paying very much for a Japanese import, even though he has plenty of upside. I see him helping our bullpen for a few years.

Remeber how good Sasaki was for a few years? Takatsu almost won rookie of the year honors as a RELIEVER. Please don't tell me foregin pitchers are never good.

I hate foriegn pitchers. B.K kim comes to mind.

Techically Gange is Canadian and didn't we have some pitcher from the DR named oh I dunno Pedro Matinez.
