Why the hell hasnt Rice been elected into the hall of fame?!?! he was one of the few people on the red sox to become captain, he was mvp in 1978(not a great year), 2000+ hits, 382 career hrs, and wasnt terrible defensively....wat is going on here

In a few words, Jim Rice and the writers NEVER got along

He's a great player and he's great on nesn, but he just gets screwed out of the hall of fame each year.

I wouldn't have a problem with Rice in the Hall Of Fame, but I wouldn't put him in before Dwight Evans or Luis Tiant.

another thing: wats the deal with fred lynn? has he ever been on the ballot

Lynn was not a hall of famer. He was good, yes, but not hall of fame calibre.

Just because the writers doesn't like him should not even be a factor. Put aside the BS bias and judge him by his stats.
Posted
I don't think it's because it is because the writers hated him. All of the Boston writers voted for him and those were the ones who were around him the most. It was the rest of the country's writers who did not cover Rice.

Rice doesn't have the longevity or OBP to be Hall worthy. He was dominant in spurts. Add to that mediocre defense and the poor media relations and you get a guy who gets just under 60% of the vote every year. I don't think he's Hall worthy (blasphemy from a Sox fan, I know), but those are just the facts. Red Sox Hall of Fame? No question. But he is undeserving of a Cooperstown plaque.

OBP? that wasnt a factor back then, there wasnt such a stress on OBP back in the seventy's, thats billy beane, plus when you are an outfielder wiht such great offense, the stress isnt on the defense, most people think manny is a shoo-in for hof and his defense is medicre(if that). i dont think someone should be left out of the hof if their obp isnt through the roof, especially since nobody back then cared, he still had 300+ hrs and 1400+ rbis 200+ hits etc. and he desrves to get in

Bad comparison. Manny's already passed him in homers (he has 8 more) and should have well over 500 when his career is done. Plus, his OBP is much better anyway and he hasn't been a full-time DH or spent nearly as much time there as Rice has. Add to that a World Championship and WS MVP (which I know voters put a lot of weight into, deservingly or not).

I loved jim rice when he played and he was spectacular and one of the greats, but unfortunately there are certain numbers you need these days to get in the hall...Unlike kirby puckett who didnt have those numbers but had the sympathy thing, rice just doest have something 3000+ hits or over 400+ homers. The more glitzy stats that hall of famers generally have.

I think his relationship with the press is an excuse that really isnt plausible. I mean steve carlton was not a very nice guy but he was great and he got right in.

The fact is jim while a great player will always be a 60% type of hall candidate as much as it pains me to say it.

What?

You just said he needs to go in, because he didn't hit 300 HR

Did you mean that's not the only reason?

He hasn't done anything else that would jump out at you.

mvp 78(six times in top five for mvp voting), 2400 hits, 1400 rbis, 380 hrs, 8 times all star,400+ bases in one season, once a four outfielder shift was used for him (goes to show how dominant he was)and he once hit 16 consecutive balls in bp

Rice is borderline for the hall, and there are numerous other players you would have to consider and let in if he's let in. I'd certainly make a case, again, for Pete Rose.....

Even with Rose, it's nice he had all those singles, but I'd prefer the Hall looked at dominance first, not the numbers a player compiles over a ridiculously long career as a banjo hitter playing the corners. Except for a few years when he put up Gwynn-esque numbers, sans the speed, he wasn't more than Bill Mueller for the majority of his career. His career line was .303/.375/.409. Both players in their prime, I take Rice without question.

i agree that rose deserves it, but by betting on baseball i believe he should not get in, i agree with humongous, rice was dominant for periods of time and thats rice's argument
