When did Pedro ever lash out at the media? All he did was not talk to them.

Yeah, but if Pedro...uh, Pedro had a midget in the clubhouse!

Face it, Randy Johnson and his dealings with the media (and people in general) is closer to Kevin Brown and his dealings with clubhouse walls than he is to the comparatively mild-mannered Pedro.

Wow, a meltdown on his first day. I figured there would be some friction with the media during the year, but it's already happened on day one. He's in for a long year with that bunch of reporters.

hahaha got a pic of it.

For those who didn't see it, you CAN see the video on ESPN.com. I don't have Insider or anything and I was able to see it.

They weren't exactly up in his face or anything... Randy kinda overreacted in my opinion. There hasn't even been the introductory press conference and he's already issued an apology. Not a good start for Mr. Johnson.

BIG JERK

By MICHAEL MORRISSEY

January 11, 2005 - The day before his official initiation at Yankee Stadium, the Big Unit acted more like a big jerk.

In a bizarre scene witnessed by this Post reporter, the notoriously ornery Randy Johnson physically confronted a Channel 2 cameraman yesterday morning while walking on Madison Avenue.

I have always said that this guy would implode in New York, but I I had no idea it would be before the season even started!

what a jackass, well, he'll fit it nicely on the Yankees.

If today's actions are any indication, Randy Johnson has a lot to learn about dealing with the New York media.

The Yankees' newest acquistion engaged in a heated exchange and shoving match with a CBS 2 cameraman Monday on Manhattan's Madison Avenue.

Johnson, who is expected today to clear the last hurdle in the blockbuster trade that sent him from the Arizona Diamondbacks to New York by completing a physical exam, was confronted by the cameraman on Madison Ave. between 58th and 59th streets as he exited a building, accompanied by a Yankees security representative. As the camera rolled a few feet away from the 6-foot-10, 231-pound Johnson, he reached out to block the lens.

"C'mon man, I'm just taking a picture," the cameraman pleaded as the security guard attempted to intervene. "No pictures," he warned him.

As the tape continued to roll, Johnson became more agitated. He appeared to shove the cameraman while brushing past him and grumbling "Get out my face!"

"C'mon Randy, I'm just taking a picture!" the photographer repeated.

"Don't get in my face, and don't talk back to me!" Johnson scolded as he continued to try to block the lens.

The security guard again intervened, hurrying the 41-year-old lefty away as the cameraman stood in disbelief. "Welcome to New York!" he shouted after Johnson, who by that time was about 20 feet away with his back to the camera.

For the Yankees, it was an unwelcome flare-up of the dark side of Johnson's surly, stoic personality. Although his intensity has helped him become a future Hall of Famer on the mound, it has also cultivated the perception that Johnson is unapproachable and unfriendly in the clubhouse. Boston Red Sox ace Curt Schilling reportedly asked to be traded from the Diamondbacks last winter in part because he and Johnson despised one another.

Monday's incident is particularly untimely for the Yankees because they are expected to introduce Johnson at a press conference either today or tomorrow. Such negative publicity, particularly for a team that has always placed high emphasis on its players being media-friendly is certain to create a stir among top Yankees executives.

Those same executives worked tirelessly for months to complete a trade for Johnson, whom the Yanks had coveted since he asked to be traded last summer. They finally reached a deal two weeks ago, agreeing to send righthander Javier Vazquez along with a pair of prospects and $9 million to Arizona for the big lefty. As part of the deal, the Yanks also signed Johnson to a two-year, $32-millon contract extension.

Johnson brings a career record of 246-128 along with a 3.07 ERA and 4,161 career strikeouts to a pitching staff that fell victim to injuries and underperfomance in the second half of 2004.

wow what a collective sense of amnesia--you guys in your love for that greedy slime pedro--seem to forget his constant bickering and lashing at the emdia...

"all he ever did was talk to them"

Huh, what planet were you living on at the time--Uranus?

He wwent a whole year giving them the silent treatment, because they were being too hard on him.

If your worship a guy get the facts straight , he was dick, a hall-of-famer to be sure, but a dick too.

speaking of dicks I am still cleaning the vomit off my keyboard after looking at the picture of RJ..

Yeah, that's how he will look when he shuts down ortiz and Damon who suck against him.

That's an intelligent statement, considering Johnny Damon has faced Randy Johnson exactly once in his career and Ortiz has NEVER faced him.

Crap, David Wells has faced Randy Johnson (as a hitter) more than Damon and Ortiz COMBINED.

You could have at least referenced SOMEone who's struggled against him in the past, like Payton, Millar, or Bellhorn... Bellhorn does look ugly against Randy though... 0-9 with 8 K's.... eek.

You COULD have said something intelligent, referencing the fact that Damon is considerably worse against lefties than righties, or that Trot Nixon historically has struggled against left handed pitchers..... but then you wouldn't be a Yankee fan, now would you?

Well I stand corrected. I will admit when I'm wrong. But, it looks like the average agaisnt him from that list still doesn't look good for the Sox.

It doesn't look promising, but the only guy who's faced him enough to really get an idea for how he'd do is Jay Payton.

I'm not someone who is foolish enough to say the Yankees aren't better with Randy Johnson, but for the sake of the board, for the sake of your own reputation on this board, try to at least educate yourself before making statements like the one about Ortiz/Damon.

Actually, I'm hoping he stays around for a LOOOOOOOOONG time. It's his absence from meddling in the early 90s (due to being BANNED from baseball) that allowed the Yankees to build from the ground up. It's been since after 2001 in which he's just spent, spent, spent like he did in the 80s whenever there was a problem. I'm all for his meddling, as they're no closer to a title than they were in 2001, and their long-term prospects are shot in terms of building from within. I love George Steinbrenner's presence. The only thing better would be when he dies, the owner of the NY Rangers takes over.
