The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with former Houston Astros pitcher Wade Miller.

Miller, who was 7-7 with a 3.35 ERA in 15 starts before going on the disabled list June 29 with a season-ending rotator cuff injury, passed a physical exam Wednesday in Boston and agreed to a contract with a $1.5 million base salary and $3 million in incentives. Agent Bob Garber said the deal will be finalized on Friday. Los Angeles, Arizona, Oakland, Texas, Florida, Detroit, Kansas City and the New York Mets were among the other clubs that expressed an interest in Miller, who has a 58-39 record in five big-league seasons. "The Red Sox were right on it from the beginning," Garber said. "They flew him to town and made him feel welcome. That's what Theo Epstein does. He makes players feel wanted, and they want to come here." Garber said that he expects Miller to be ready to pitch by Opening Day. If that's the case, Miller will join Curt Schilling and new free-agent signees David Wells and Matt Clement at the top of a revamped Boston rotation.

Excellent, I was hoping they'd do that. It's a lot like Mantei's contract, pretty low, with a lot of incentives. Basically, low-risk, high-reward. If Miller can get back to the way he was two years ago I like the thought of him in the rotation a lot.

Awesome. Our rotation is now more than respectable, and the yankee fans can stop their semi-baseless gloating.

Of course, this means that that Randy Johnson rumor just went out the window (I think), but I'll take it.

I assume Bronson's going to the pen now. My guess would be that he's going to be trade bait around the deadline, barring injury to another starter. I just can't see them making Wake head back into the pen.

Cornroyo is too good for trade bait, youkilis rules proposed a trade to me that would bring Soriano to Boston involving Arroyo that I might consider:

arroyo-bellhorn-lester for soriano

but it also includes giving up lester.

Anyway, in my mind, arroyo is #5 and wake goes to default long reliever/ spot starter spot.

Is that just a made up trade or is there news about that.

But anyway on the real topic, I figure that we'll have the 5 man roster without Schilling on opening day and when he gets better (whenever that happens) Wake will move to the pen. Arroyo shouldn't move to the pen because he will obviously be good in upcoming years and I don't think we should trade him so we hafta keep him on the rotation to get him ready.

Another reason to put Wake at the pen is because it would really screw up some batters after facing any of our pitchers (mostly have great speed). They would definitely be thrown off by his knuckle.

I say it's Bronson... but that's the beauty of it. Schill's out for the first month so Arroyo will get his starts. Wells and Wade are both suspect to injury, so Arroyo is the backup there too. If Wake or Clement get roughed around for any stretch, you can sub in Arroyo. We also have Halama as a backup SP.

This is great, but with the extra arms, isn't it possible now that Theo will try and package one or two of them for another player or pitcher?

Arroyo is a better starter than Wake in my mind and he should stay for that reason and for the knuckle offset of Wake. It's definitely a better idea to have Wake in the pen.

that staff has as many question marks as the Yankee staff. Only sure thing for the Red Sox in terms of performance is Schilling, and thats barring any ankle rehab setbacks.

I like the signing. At $1.5 million it's relatively low risk. At $4.5 million max, he's a pretty cheap signing.

The April rotation:

David Wells

Wade Miller

Matt Clement

Tim Wakefield

Bronson Arroyo

Is not bad. When Schill gets back in May, I would move whoever had the worst April to the bullpen, but if I had to pick now, probably Wakefield.

BUT,

Schilling

Wells

Miller

Clement

Wakefield/Arroyo

Is pretty solid. If Miller gets hurt, or if Curt has problems coming back, the team's got options.

If Miller is healthy and returns to form then Theo is going to look like a genius for signing him. I like this move because you can never have too much pitching. It's a relatively safe risk for us.

Awesome. He may have been on a downswing for the last couple of seasons but im glad to have him aboard. Im beginning not to miss pedro so much. And maybe now WE WONT HAVE TO START B.K. KIM!
Posted

s***, I always forget about Kim.

So for available starters we have some real depth (if kim gets figured out).

Think about this and if they pitch to expectations:

Schilling

Wells

Miller

Clement

Arroyo

Wakefield

Halama (don't know what to expect)

B.K. Kim

I feel I'm still forgetting someone.....

I guess we won't have to call up anyone from double A this year if we need a spot starter.

ok so right now our rotation looks like this (just because i need to see it because all the pitching we're getting is confusing me)...

schilldawg

wells

miller

clement

wakefield/arroyo

ok, now can u imagine if arroyo and wake were moved to the pen if we got RJ too? this is a time i really wouldnt mind it...

RJ

schilldawg

wells

miller

clement

the thought of clement being our NUMBER 5 starter is amazing...

but hey, even though this rotation is kind of out there...i can still dream cant i?

o yea and BTW, its my 1500th post!!

Forget RJ. It might look good to pair him up with Schilling again but I want to get younger in the starting rotation, not older. How much does he have left? Is it worth it in the long term?

Certainly can't get hurt by this contract, 1.5 mill. Still the guy has a busted wing and it's a roll of the dice to see what he's got.
