Schilling doesn't think he'll be ready by Opening Day

Red Sox ace says he's about a month behind in healing process

By Boston.com Staff | December 14, 2004

Less than 24 hours after the Red Sox learned Pedro Martinez will be headed to the New York Mets for the next four years, there were indications they may be without another member of their starting rotation on Opening Day.

This has been the worst offseason for the sox in a while, just think if they hadn't signed wells now! It is looking more and more like BK Kim will have a spot on the 2005 rotation.

How do you suggest we get the talent to trade for Tim Hudson AND AJ Burnett?

Relax folks. We still have plenty of options now that we have 13m available to spend.

I think we will find out soon that Ranteria is in the bag. Either Clement or A.J. Burnett are a good bet.

Pedro will be missed, but it is now time to move on. Shilling's health shouldn't be a problem when it really counts, I hope

I have be honest with you, I really like the fact that Theo and the Trio didn't buckle to sign Martinez for 4 years. Good move!

One more thing. I don't think Tek should be offered anything more than what is on the table now. 4yr/36m is plenty. I am surprised they are even willing to go 4 yrs with Tek.

Well, that's my two cents worth.

teks offer on the table is WAY TOO MUCH. he's not worth more than 7 a year imo. i'm glad we didn't sign pedro to 4 years. sigh, my all time favorite pitcher.

as for huddy and aj burnett, we'll only get one unless we rape our farm system. i think burnet is more risky but has a much higher upside.

BOSTON -- Red Sox ace Curt Schilling said his right ankle isn't recovering from surgery as quickly as he expected and he doesn't think he'll be ready to pitch by Opening Day.

"I'm going to be late, I think, starting the season," Schilling told WEEI-AM on Tuesday.

Schilling said he had a cast removed from the ankle over the weekend and learned for the first time that he wouldn't be able to rotate his ankle for four to five weeks. That means he won't be able to resume throwing when he had planned.

"So I'm looking at least another month before I start throwing, which puts me a month behind," he said.

Schilling and team officials had expected to be ready by spring training.

The right-hander had surgery Nov. 9 to repair a ruptured tendon sheath on his ankle. The injury appeared to have ended his season in the middle of Boston's World Series run. But team doctors, in an unprecedented procedure, made a wall of stitches in Schilling's ankle to keep the tendon in place.

Schilling started Game 6 in the ALCS and, with blood seeping through his sock, beat the New York Yankees. Boston eventually won the series.

Schilling didn't elaborate on when he thought he might return and left open the possibility that he might be ready sooner than expected. The Red Sox open at Yankee Stadium on April 4.

"Lots can change once it comes out of a cast and I get going and I know I've been a quick healer," he said. "But as of right now the timetable looks something later than Opening Day."

top starting pitchers to sign for our rotation:

1. Tim Hudson

2. Matt Clement

3. A.J. Burnett

4. Hideo Nomo (noone realizes he's a free agent)

5. Odalis Perez

All are free agents and I think they are all quality starters to pitch anywhere in our rotation.

I still believe Kim could turn himself into a very respectable #4 guy over the next few years. He's a headcase, as is Lowe, but Lowe showed signs of brilliance. The guy's only what, 27?

It would not surprise me at all if Kim were the #5 to start the season.

Opening Day?

Wells

*other (could switch with Wells)

Wake

Arroyo

Kim

Once Schilling is back:

Schilling

Wells

Personally, I just don't have confidence in Kim. He has pitched well, and has shown that he can dominate, but until he comes out and strings together some quality starts, I'll still be skeptical.
