I thought the rumor was Jay Payton OR Ramon Vasquez. Not both.

Well I don't think they'd do it if it was just Payton. Payton and Roberts are equal in my mind plus Payton is more expensive.

Dec. 11 - According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the Padres hope to bring native son Roberts home in a trade with the Red Sox.

 

The Padres would send center fielder Jay Payton and utility man Ramon Vazques to Boston in exchange for the speedy Roberts, whom the Giants were also interested in after Steve Finley opted to sign with the Angels on Dec. 10.

 

The Union Tribune reports the Padres, who have conceded that pitcher David Wells has chosen the Red Sox over them, hope to complete the Roberts trade by Saturday. Roberts, who after arriving from the Dodgers last summer became one of the Red Sox' heroes, is a former multisport star at Rancho Buena Vista High. He has said he would love to play for the Padres.

 

Earning about $2 million this year, Roberts provides the Padres with the basestealing savvy and leadoff hitting ability they want at about half of Payton's guaranteed salary.

I don't think it makes sense unless the Padres pay at least $1 million of Payton's salary.

The Red Sox trade Roberts, a cheap, speedy backup for Payton, a slower, more expensive backup?

 

Yes, he's got more power... but I still don't like it.

The SF Chronicle has repeatedly reported that the Giants are interested in Roberts. Center field is a major priority fot the team as they have already filled their SS and closer holes. They tried to get Finley but he wanted to stay close to home in San Diego so he accepted less money in Anaheim. They also were looking at Posednik but he was just traded to the White Sox.

 

So their #1 now seems to be Roberts and today the Giants signed Matheny to a 3 year deal.

With Matheny, AJ Pierzynski is on his way out as the Giants arent going to keep a pricey backup in Matheny or Pierzynski. The Giants may be using him to get a trade for Roberts especially if Varitek doesnt sign soon. Just a thought.

 

However the giants could let him leave as a free agent by not offering him arbitration so there would be no possibilty of a trade.
